barry peterson reports from tokyo. >> reporter: the ruling generals beefed up security before the verdict. when aung san suu kyi was sentenced to three years, they quickly stepped in and reduced it to 1 1/2 years. a sentence to be served under house arrest. she has been in detention for 14 of the last 20 years, mostly held in her home. the case was sparked by an american who broke into that home. the military claimed his uninvited presence violated the terms of her previous sentence for house arrest. he was sentenced today to seven years in prison, four of those in hard labor. the military staged a coup in 1962 and later nullified the results of a 1990 election that suu kyi's party won. in 2007 the generals brutally endeded protests by monks against their regime. suu kyi struggled for democracy earned her a nobel peace prize and was widespread support outside myanmar, also known as burma. a sign of that today in korea and the philippines, where protestors demanded her release, demands ignored again today by the military. barry peterson, cbs news, tokyo. >>> president obama pitches healthc

john barry the national security correspondent for news week and deputy chief editor. welcome to the show. let's start off with iraq. the security situation there was assumed to be improving and so u.s. forces could do an aggressive pullout and some suggested that schedule to be accelerated to be out of iraq by 2011. security situation there is a little bit rougher. brian, any chance that u.s. forces will stay there beyond 2011? >> i think there are clear signs in the last couple of weeks there are ethnic tensions, very strong ones still simmering just beneath the surface and growing concern that could come out into the open. certainly there are extremists that are trying to stoke those fires again. and certainly the u.s. military expresses concern that this could get out of hand. on the other hand they are encouraged that so far things have been relatively stable. that the shiah population have been reserved in not responding to these more recent attacks. but having said that, with the elections coming up in january for the parliament in iraq, there is very little cha

more now from barry petersen. >> reporter: it was not one by two storms that roared across asia. the first making landfall in taiwan where it dumped an estimated six and a half feet of rain in some areas, bringing down a building that was once a hotel and which fortunately had been evacuated. but in southern taiwan, there are frantic rescue efforts to find some 600 people who may be buried under a mudslide. the storm then moved into china forcing a million people to flee coastal areas and head inland. the chinese government used cell phones to send warnings, an estimated 8 million text messages telling people to flee to higher ground. but a typhoon raking across taiwan and china wasn't asia's only worry. a second typhoon headed directly for japan. this storm triggered deadly mudslides and warnings across japan, there may be more to come. authorities tonight have tokyo on alert. they are hoping that the storm will skim along japan's eastern coastline. but also telling people to be ready on tuesday just in case the typhoon changes course and aims directly for japan's biggest city.
