[applause] marion barry helped people.n disagreed with people, too. that was also a strength. fightingearly days of for justice and equality to his last year on the council fighting to restore benefits to families on welfare, i would argue this is what made mary and barry a leader -- marion barry a leader. the combination of touching people, yet being a fighter. he fought for principles important to him and to us. i want to make knowledge all of the current and former members of the council who are here this afternoon. there are too many to name individually and there is a point in that. their presence emphasizes the importance of marion barry. although most everyone thinks of him as a former mayor, mayor for life, the fact is that he was elected six times to the council. [applause] and he served almost 16 years on it, about the same length of time that he served as mayor of our great city. [applause] there is not a member of the council who is not -- has not benefited from knowing and working with marion, whether his skil

marion barry. many of us knew marion barry in a lot of different capacities. some of you knew marion barry, the community activist. some of you knew marion barry, the politician. some of you just knew marion barry as a friend. but today i wanted to speak on the side of marion barry i knew, you know, just as being his son. [applause] first off, first side of marion barry i wanted to speak on was marion barry, the teacher and the chemist. and i remember many nights when i was in the seventh grade and struggling with chemistry, and he would sit me could down, andi said, he knew the periodic table like the back of his hand even years later. i'm not talking about the chemist in the classroom sense, i'm talking about the chemist in the formulas that he used for his leadership and why he was such an effective leader. [applause] you know, with chemistry you have elements, and you combine them together, they create a compound. you know, and he had some compounds for the way he handled his business. he said if you take, you take one part courage and one part determinati

such a man was marion barry.was here in washington when my brother went through his great trial and the reporter from one of the washington newspapers came to me with a question. but before she asked her question she was building me up as some moral giant somebody who was married and had a good life and didn't use drugs and what do you think she said of a man who broke his marital vows and used drugs. i said who are you talking about, john fitzgerald kennedy? now, that ended the press conference. it is not right or moral to speak of the dead in an unkind way. i only raised that for those who like to talk about our deficiencies while they hide the wickedness of their own leaders that have been over us and over the world. nobody passes this life without committing sin. and when i said nobody, i mean nobody. the pope, the cardinals, the bishops, the imams, nobody comes this way without committing sin. i am a sinner. and if i did not commit a sin i would not need the mercy, the forgiveness of god. so the holy qur'an

the complicated world of barry goldwater -- if you remember barry goldwater, complicated is not a word that is usually associated with the senator from arizona. it might even elicit a laugh. the classic image of goldwater -- of course, this is one of his campaign posters -- the classic image looks something like this. barry goldwater was extremely conservative, predictably and extremely conservative. the distilled essence of political conservatism. an opponent of the new deal. that equally vociferous opponent of lyndon johnson and the great society, opposed to welfare, opposed to regulation, opposed to excessive taxes, a defender of traditional morality, an opponent of unions, militantly anti-communist, a supporter of the military, etc. and so forth. we can just take them off -- take them off -- tick them off. put together, he almost emerges as a cardboard cutout, a statue, an ideology attached to a warm body, uncompromising aggressive, perhaps even according to his critics dangerously so. you can see that in just a couple film clips that i would like to show you. can we run the commun

marion barry, as a boy, knew only segregation. marion barry as a man groomed himself to challenge segregation. he used his fine mind and pension for hard work to write his own ticket into the professional class. but marion gave up his chemistry school graduate fellowship along with his phd, although he had finished all coursework except for the thesis. for marion could not resist the call of the movement. he moved from chemistry classes to james lawson's nonviolence resistance workshops and to leadership along with diane nash in the nashville sit-ins, to raleigh where he became the first chair of the student nonviolent coordinating committee, and to the mississippi movement and the work of the mississippi freedom democratic party. during those years, marion not only steeped himself in nonviolent resistance but in active, strategic organization. what marion learned about organizing in the deep south held him in good stead for the rest of his life. he brought community organizing to the district of columbia and organized his way int

vintage barry.nding up for people who were disadvantaged, people who could not effectively fight for themselves. and by the way the meeting ended soon thereafter. the home opened and was a huge success because marion barry had stood up for a group of people that could not effectively speak for hemselves. many of us don't get to smell the flowers while we are here on earth. in his last year of his life mayor barry's book was published and he was able to share his story, his thoughts, and his insight with many of us as he appeared at book signings and interviews on television and radio. those who had never heard of mare yb barry were able to learn more about him and gain nsight into the person who was popularly known as mayor for life in the district of olumbia. as longtime supporters and newcomers to the barry story swarmed around him, they embraced his journey and worked with him so he could pass the torch of knowledge on to the next generation. marion barry's legacy is intimately woven into the fab

marion shepilov barry was born in 1936. was eight, his mother left his father whom he never saw ever again, and moved to memphis. he was inducted into the national honor society in high school. he received a degree in chemistry from lemoyne college, and a masters university in 1960. he required all courses a doctoral degree from university of kansas where he'd studied quantitative and qualitative organic chemistry. he was cofounder for the civil student roup the nonviolent coordinating committee. in 1964, the organization sent him to dc where he won a seat school board in 1971. he served as a second elected mayor of the district of columbia from 1979 to 1991, and is the fourth man from 1995 to 1999. he has been a member of the dc ward 8 , representing since 2005. of many a life accomplishments -- and we have just heard a few of them -- mr. is most well-known for a few minute videotape. i like to usethe time this aspects explore other of your life that he did not know about until i read your book. for instance, one thing tha

the reverend canon richard livingsston mar kess-barry -- barry was born in miami, florida, to bahamian immigrants. he attended the miami-dade county public school system and worked as a garbage collector before school and dishwasher after school. he earned his bachelor of arts in 1962, that same year he, married his college sweetheart. the couple is married for 52 years and has one daughter and two grandsons. reverend barry's lifelong devotion to the church began in 1965 when he became the only person of color enrolled at the virginia theological seminary. three years later, he earned a mast for the beginity and in 1989, he was the youngest person to earn a doctor of divinity degree in the 200 year history of the virginia theological seminary. he's been a visiting fellow at the university of munich in germany -- germany as well as oxford university. in 1987 he took a pay cut to lead the largest and oldest episcopal congregation for people of color in south florida. not only did he transform st. agnes and leave it with an endowment upon his retirement he, worked tirelessly to improve th
