this region so well, barry mccaffrey, general, tell us how you view the matchup here so far. it is very difficult to say, because we don't know exactly what they're throwing at tel aviv, but it does seem there has been confirmation that ballistic missiles were involved. >> yeah, well, i would assume that the iranians will not target in this attack israeli urban areas. they're going after military bases. many of which are out in the desert environments and would be unlikely to sustain serious casualties, even to the military. we also need to be concerned, though that the iranians in april fired 120 ballistic missiles at israel of which nine did get through and struck two military bases. so that air defense capability of israel, short range iron dome, medium david slings, long range arrow three, works brilliantly, but not perfectly. so there is a clear risk that an iranian serious strike, which is sustained for days, could cause serious damage on the ground. i think the other thing we got to look at, the israelis have two divisions up on the northern border, they just called up

with us msnbc military analyst, barry mccaffrey. raphe, let me start with you.kes on iran and the expected reaction to them? >> well, jose, the iranian regime initially appeared to be down playing these strikes, saying their air defenses largely thwarted the israeli attack. as the smoke has cleared, if you will, it became clear at least four iranian soldiers were killed. a number of military bases were struck. we are seeing hardening rhetoric coming from iran. their foreign ministry today saying they will use all available tools to respond to this israeli attack. the iranian supreme leader met yesterday with the families of those four soldiers, and he left the door open to retaliation. now, jose that is not what the white house wants to see. president biden speaking to reporters over the weekend said neither side should escalate further. he said that he hopes this was the end. but what is very clear, jose, is we are in a new era now. we used to talk about the conflict between iran and israel as being a shadow war, iranian proxies attacking israel, israel launchi

joining me is barry mccaffrey. good to see you, general. do you think this changes the equation? just a warning of what might happen by someone like general john kelley, former chief of staff. this new reporting said that trump took action to ready the troops. does that change things? >> i think we actually knew about this, chris, on multiple occasions, trump, while acting as president, envisioned using the military for a variety of suppression efforts. certainly, after he lost the election, there was a period of time where it looked to me he was sitting up a coup against the constitution. he had an acting secretary of defense, retired lieutenant colonel out of the white house and essentially giving orders that the armed forces and he had told on earlier occasions the chairman of jcs he wanted protesters shot. can't you shoot them in the legs or something? so we have to take this seriously. look. the armed forces 2.1 million men and women, active guard and reserve, are created to protect the country against their foreign enemies. and every young officer coming into the military l

joining us now helene cooper and retired general barry mccaffrey.houldn't change the u.s. posture towards aiding israel in this war in gaza? >> probably not. look, this is a pivotal moment. there is no question. sinwar was an evil genius behind the 7 october attack. they maintained operational security. they had a brilliant plan. they came by air, land and sea. its purpose was not to strike out and up a blow against israel, but to horrify israel. it was demented. it wasn't units that got out of control. it was planned from the start by this man who is now dead. so to some extent the sense of justice and retribution of the israeli people, particularly those with false, 250 hostages went into gaza is important. but now israel is faced with a new dilemma. they have shattered the chain of command of hamas. killed probably half the 30,000 fighters. they have devastated the civilian population and infrastructure. what next? i don't think either hamas nor israel have the faintest chance of solving this dilemma. it's got to come from outside. it's got to be

coverage, "new york times" correspondent michael crowley is here and refired four star general barry mccaffrey. barry, take us through your assessment of what it means that israel is saying that there will be a response and it will be -- it sounds like what they're trying to say is it will be a big one. >> well, they're chilling words. israel is under massive attack. from gaza, by the hamas remnant, 10,000 and some who have been killed, from hezbollah, with presumably 120,000 or more rockets and missiles that they have not just been able to deploy. from some extent from syria and now the houthis and now the second state attack by iran on israel proper. and to our technical astonishment, they were able to defeat both of the iranian attacks. at some point the idf has to respond. and not just with a calibrated political gesture, but with a gin win attack. the iranians are vulnerable, they have 35 israeli fighter aircraft, they're fuel system, oil fields are extremely vulnerable. and they'll go after the nuclear capabilities, the irans have been painfully constructing. that may well trigger a regi
