we were down here at the 12th street bart station getting an update about bart and what riders would have to keep in mind this weekend. one thing we were told is check your transfer and remember that if you're traveling anywhere from the fremont dublin bart stations, up through the lake merit station, this transfer station is super important. one of the two tracks will be closed to perform what bart is calling vital maintenance and repair work to electric cables within the system. translation for riders, some delays over memorial day weekend. the delays could be 20 to 40 minutes, since on saturday, single tracking goes from 6:00 in the morning for an hour and a half. on sunday and memorial day, expect delays from 8:00 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon, plus bart will be running a sunday schedule on memorial day. and here's a head's up for next weekend, expect the same delays on saturday and sunday. we wanted to bring you to the toll street station, not only for bart's update but because if you are traveling to the oakland or san francisco airports via bart, this two level st

the bart owns 60 tasers not enough for every officer on the force. they're going to consider buying 130 more. look at the incident that prompted this january 1, 2009 shooting at the fruitvale station by bart cop johannes mehserle who thought he said, who thought he was using his taser. a bart consultant recommended giving each officer a taser to increase the familiarity with the non-lethal device. consultant said not buying the tasers would leave bart police with fewer non-lethal options dealing with the violent suspects. mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. all tasers were pulled last year from the bart police department after an officer used one to shoot at a 13-year-old who was fleeing police on his bicycle. that's against the police department policy. the boy was not hit. now retrained, all officers may be rearmed with tasers. come thursday, the bart board is going to consider spending about $141,000 so that every officer can have one. live in oakland, terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> thank you. >>> bart plans to ask voters in contra

just about an hour ago, bart held a press conference right here at the 12th street bart station. they gave us an update about what riders would need to keep in mind this weekend. at the meeting, we were given this picture to show the damage done by a fire back on december 19th. the the repair work will be done over the next two weekends, causing delays. vital maintenance to the electric cable. the assistant manager gave us an example of the cable which will be replaced. we were told the riders most affected are the dublin and fremont riders through lake merritt. the emphasis was on the 12th street bart. all transfers will go over the 12th street station over the usually 19th station. two tracks will cause delays, anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. on sunday, memorial day, which has a holiday schedule, expect delays from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 in the afternoon. >> this is really necessary, it's actually an emergency repair contract. we have to fix some cabling that feeds the third rail. god forbid we should have a failure in that cabling, it would mean basically no service through the

want to update you on this bart situation.ow there are 15-minute delays into and out of san francisco. the problem is an earlier issue, a medical emergency actually at the powell street station. a person in a wheelchair fell on the tracks at the powell street station. we understand from bart police they weren't seriously hurt but we have been on and off the phone with bart central this morning and again right now powell street service has resumed at the powell street station. they were able to get trains through so right now residual delays of 15 minutes in either direction. major problem in pittsburg. look at the long line of red in either direction. westbound and eastbound highway 4. late running roadwork was supposed to wrap up. that's not the case. an hour later, we still have detours in place. so traffic is jammed in those eastbound lanes from railroad. and it looks like it's causing some extra heavy traffic in those westbound lanes, as well. so watch out for that. meantime, at the bay bridge, we have metering lights on a

you can also expect delays on bart this weekend.lizabeth wenger explains how maintenance work on the transbay tube may slow down bart travelers. >> reporter: good morning, if you're planning on riding bart this weekend, expect major delays for trains heading through the transbay tube between oakland and san francisco. bart has to do maintenance and repair work to the tunnel this weekend, specifically the cables that provide power to the track. so for you, what does this mean? bart officials best estimate is approximately 20 to even 40 minutes delays on those lines requiring transfers. work is already wrapped up for today, but expect delays sunday and monday afternoon, until about 2:30 in the afternoon. and don't forget, bart is running a sunday schedule on monday for the holiday. >>> it is memorial day weekend, so a lot of people having outdoor plans. that's not going to be the best idea, unfortunately. >> oh, no, it will be fine. go ahead with plans. >> well, the wind and the rain possibility! dooms day! i think everybody really pu

well, bart spokesman joining us live on the phone now to tell us how bart security is being increased after the killing of osama bin laden. can you hear us? >> i can hear you fine. >> so what's happening? what will bart commuters see this morning? >> well, you know, over the past couple months we've been increasing our visibility on our trains with the critical asset patrol team which is a group of officers that the federal government has offered. both officers will be out on our trains and they'll be joined by additional officers as well. and we'll also have increased number of operations folks who will be out in vests so that way people will be able to identify our bart workers who are out there. we'll encourage our passengers to do if you see something, say something. if you see something suspicious, say something. there are a lot of people out there you can talk to. >> what are you telling passengers if they are concerned that there might be some sort of retaliation? what extra precautions as well are you taking to kind of keep the passengers minds' at ease? >> you know reminding
