the former bart police officer convicted of killing oscar grant is a free man this morning. johannes meheserle walked out of jail 1 minute past midnight. ann makovec is in los angeles tracking the story where meheserle served 11 months behind bars good morning ann. >> reporter: good morning grace. his release was a typical, normally when a prisoners time is up they let them out the front door here at l.a. county men's jail that was not the case with meheserle. he was released at 12:01 a.m. we were out here all night and didn't see any sign of meheserle authorities say that is because his safety, they were trying to preserve obviously as well as the safety of their staff members because a lot of people obviously upset by johannes meheserle and his release. oscar grant's family were waiting outside the jail since 11:30 p.m. last night they are upset because of changes in the case made that they say they were not informed of. >> we need to begin to talk about the issues of race and racism, and especially the racism that exists in this criminal justice system i know for a fact h
