do bart's new fair gates actually make a difference? we check on changes as bart prepares to upgrade another station. it is part of building a better bay area, and following the story of mail theft, the new steps being taken to stop began around 215 this afternoon with this car that sky seven captured being towed from the eastern span. police say it was involved in a crash and rolled over. that's when things really got wild, the chp says. the driver then jumped off the bridge into the water. he was pulled from the bay by the coast guard, taken to the hospital with possible broken bones. three lanes of traffic were then closed for crash cleanup that lasted only 30 minutes. they reopened by 330. but you know what? the damage was done. as you know, it's a ripple effect. domino effect. traffic is still at a standstill around the bay bridge on on ramps in the city. this was how it looked at first and harrison streets not too long ago. and a live look now from our south beach tower. camera shows the major backup still happening on interstate

bart police were called to powell street station just after 11 p.m. last night, according to the bart police chief. his officers arrived to a tragedy. the train was arriving at the platform and coming into the platform when the victim was pushed and we believe that the suspect intentionally pushed this person into that moving train, causing those serious injuries, according to chief franklin, the 74 year old woman now identified as corazon dandan, hit her head on the oncoming train and fell onto the platform. she died a short time later at san francisco general hospital. her family didn't want to talk on camera, but corazon's nephew tells us her family calls her takakura and she works at the parc 55 hotel, close to the powell street bart station. her niece tells us she was on her way home last night when the attack happened. bart police say they were on scene within four minutes of getting the first call of this assault, and they had someone in custody four minutes after that. bart police have arrested 49 year old trevor belmont, also known as hope tang, on charges of murder and attac

bart police say a 74-year-old woman was killed after she was pushed into a bart train. it happened at the bart station. anne makovec joins us with more on how this woman died. >> reporter: a lot of questions about the motivation in this case, but a man has been arrested. her nephew just sent us photos of the woman killed. corazon dandan was 74 years old. her nephew said she worked as a telephone operator at local hotels including the westin st. francis. she was pushed into an incoming train just after 11:00 last night. witnesses pointed out the suspect to police who was still in the area identified as 49-year-old trevor belmont. court records show belmont actually has a lengthy criminal history since 2013. belmont has been involved in nearly two dozen criminal cases as well as several misdemeanors. and that all comes as bart police say they are trying to address the passenger concerns about safety. >> we are working very hard to make bart the safest way to travel around the bay area, increasing the presence of the uniform personnel out and about. this is the first homic

the arraignment of a man charged with murder after being accused of pushing a woman into an oncoming bart train last week. prosecutors have charged 49 year-old trevor belmont for the july first killing. they say he shoved 74 year-old coors on and then into the path of a train at the powell street station in the city. belmont's arraignment has been delayed now 3 times on friday, monday and again today as he's reportedly being evaluated for possible mental health problems. a 15 month-old boy who fell from a second-story window in san francisco last week has died. the baby has been identified as hughley says, rodriguez, firefighters say he fell more than 20 feet wednesday in the mission district near mission in 19th child protective services is investigating. a gofundme has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. >> happening right now, santa clara county water officials are considering an ordinance that would reduce the homeless encampments. and there are a lot of them along county waterways. kron 4 gooden has been following the story. she joins us live from the newsroom. lezl

bart station.t police describe the kidnaping and the killing from earlier this month as rare and isolated incidents. but bart passengers tell me they don't feel safe. bart police say they arrested a 37 year old man for kidnaping a 17 year old girl at the powell street, bart station. they say the incident happened inside the fare gates on the concourse level tuesday night, around 8:00. the kidnaping was reported by a witness, and it was captured by surveillance cameras. >> it's scary. it definitely is. it's just you have to be extra, extra cautious. >> this is the second major incident at the powell street station in just over a week's time. on july 1st, a homeless man thought to be mentally ill, allegedly pushed 74 year old corazon don don into a bart train. she died from her injuries. a source tells me the motive for the kidnaping may be sex trafficking. the victim may have been driven from oakland to san francisco by the suspect, and it appears she may have been trying to escape from him. police

bart police say they were called to powell street station just after 11 last night. responded, they arrived to a tragedy. train was arriving at the platform and coming into the platform when the victim was pushed. and we believe the suspect intentionally pushed this person into that moving train, causing those serious injuries. chief franklin says 74 year old corazon dandan hit her head on the oncoming train and fell onto the platform. she was taken to a hospital, where she later died. bart police say they arrested the suspect, 49 year old trevor belmont, within minutes. he's a transient and is also known as hope tang. we have had contacts with this person in the past, but not for any serious crimes such as this one. corazon's family didn't want to speak on camera, but her nephew told us that she worked at the park 55 hotel, which is close to the powell street bart station. her niece said she was on her way home last night when the attack happened. belmont was booked into jail on charges of murder and attacking an elder. meanwhile bart police say they have increased

bart station in san francisco. today, bart started work to replace all the fare gates as part of its systemwide upgrade. the new fare gates will be six feet tall, and according to bart, they can't be pushed open easily or climbed over. the gates will also have sensors to stay open longer for riders in wheelchairs or riders with bikes. bart says the new gates won't just be more accessible, they'll help stop fare evaders from getting on board. it's going to make bart safer, and at the end of the day, that is the most important thing that we can do is listen to our riders and their concerns about safety and be responsive in a way that they can really see the difference. bart says it will take several weeks to replace all the gates at civic center. the agency has a goal to replace all gates in its system by the end of next year. a warning from the state of a possible deadly toxins in shellfish public health is warning people not to eat recreationally, caught mussels, clams and scallops from santa cruz and monterey coun

here at the bart station at the civic center. they are already crews with bart. busy at work this morning. right now. they haven't installed those new entry gates just yet, but they're taping off the ground because they're going to barricade this area, so they can later installed those entry gates later today. now it's going to be one of a handful of entry gates in the city of san francisco, and we know that they're going to include new locking mechanism. in them. now let's show you video of the gates that are already installed over at west. clyne station, the agency wants to replace the old gates and address trends. like people by passing through like we've seen this morning. and in turn improving safety the gate replacements will begin for san francisco starting here at the civic center than going to a handful of others like the ones over at montgomery powell street 24th. street station and also at san francisco international airport. now these gates will look completely different from the ones we have about 700. in total in the city or for the system, actually

bart is working on repairs after a fire. an outage shut down four separate stations yesterday, forcing hundreds of riders to evacuate. the agency reports the cause is possibly a blown circuit breaker that likely impacted the track in that area. bart says there is still no service for riders in oakland. here's a list of the stations currently affected. 12th street 19th street. lake merritt and fruitvale. there's also no green line service, no red line service between richmond and millbrae. our crews were at the embarcadero station last night, not too long after the giants game. abc7 news reporter anser hassan talked to people who had to evacuate. >> the smoke billowing out onto oakland streets was coming from the 12th street bart station below. it was pretty smoky in the tunnel. >> i don't know how bad the fire was. i didn't see it. once they told us there was a fire, they said evacuate at the back of the car, renee morfin and his girlfriend were among the hundreds of bart passengers evacuated. >> they were stuck on bart for

veronica joins us live from the daly city bart station. getting back on track? >> reporter: i just spoke with a spokesperson from bart a few minutes ago and she tells me that the routes have been opened. by talking to some passengers on the morning rush commute, they tell me they have heard announcements that the redline is still facing a little bit of a disruption. it looks like the redline is not quite going yet so passengers going from daly city to richmond still have to rely on a transfer in oakland, so they are taking the orange line instead. so when you look at the commute for later hours, it looks like the redline will be available. so the best thing to do if you're heading out this morning, check the bart app to make sure you can take the redline or if you have to do that transfer in oakland. just keep an eye on your phone. >> hopefully people get back on track soon. thank you for that report. >>> that is the sound of hundreds of farmworkers marching for higher wages and disaster pay on sunday. they say they've not only worked thro
