bart says it was a problem with the block control system. ktvu james torres is live at the bart station in hayward. to tell us what that means and how bart is handling it. good morning. james >> dave, good morning to you. well, the good and probably most important news for you to know this morning is bart is now fully operational. all trains will be up and running today, and it's been that way since late last night. but it was a frustrating afternoon for a lot of people who were riding and rely on bus, rely on bart on the east bay. bart says about seven of its stations from here in hayward to berryessa had to shut down because of a system issue. people who usually rely on bart had to rely on bus bridges and other modes of transportation instead to get to where they needed to go. we met people who waited nearly two hours for alternatives, but bart says because of that system issue, it would have been too dangerous a risk for those trains to run to rely on that system to ensure a safe distance between our trains. >> so when the system is not o

so if you plan on taking bart today, you may need to adjust your timing because bart is making some minor schedule adjustments. mike joins us with the bigger picture for those changes. yeah, let's give you the bigger picture. we'll talk about bart, though, doing this periodically today. one of their goals is to allow for ridership to spread more evenly throughout their lines. you might have noticed some trains have cars that are packed and other trains pretty sparsely populated, not far apart from each other on the schedule. so check those bart schedules for the changes. those overhead signs will reflect the same, but you may also notice that bart is not the only one. other transit agencies are also making changes to their schedules today, better aligning their collective timing. so when bart has a schedule change the very same time, ac transit and vta and county connection, they'll adjust their bus schedules so that the everything times up as perfectly as possible. or the very famous millbrae station bart to caltrain. we've been working really hard to make it, so it's even better when yo

abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is live at macarthur bart station. hearing from passengers who were on board when the smoke started. leslie. sounds like it was pretty scary. >> harrowing ordeal for passengers who were in a train car that filled with smoke and found themselves having to jump out of it. let's start off, though, first by taking a look at sky seven. this incident happened around 230 today. this afternoon. bart said an eastbound train started filling with smoke just short of the macarthur station, saying there was an equipment problem on the train. oakland fire responded to a two alarm fire incident, but it ended up not being a fire. terrified passengers were evacuated, though, and bart says there were no reports of injuries. all bart lines were stopped for more than an hour, so an absolute mess for travel >> this one i lost, i failed. >> abc seven news. they smelled smoke on the train long before it was still in the transbay tube, and they heard a series of pops before the train came to an abrupt stop. >> the train, just all of a sudden

and bart thursday afternoon, the fremont bart station closed writers forced to get on ac transit buses. this is bart spokesperson chris filippi. this is impacting the orange in the green line and alameda county and essentially what we have is we have a computer network issue that's impacting our train control system. so out of an abundance of caution for safety, we've stopped service between hayward and fremont stations at the outage happened at 10 o'clock am thursday. >> initially it was more widespread. >> earlier today when this whole thing started around 10 this morning, we had no service south of bay fair station. so that impacted service from hayward all the way down to various in north san jose. since that time, we have been able to restore service between various in north san jose and warm springs south 3 months. so we do have service between those stations, but we're still lacking service. philippi says that they are running diagnostics to try and figure out what went wrong. >> so what's happening is there's a bus bridge provided by ac transit. they're honoring all bart fares

we do have a follow up now on yesterday's bart outage. believes someone vandalized the system, causing the outage. bart initially said a network issue stopped all trains yesterday morning between the berryessa north san jose and hayward stations took about eight hours to get everything fully back up and running. well, now, bart says, someone purposely stopped the trains and they're still trying to figure out who did it and why. tonight we are learning more about a string of wheel and rim thefts in the east bay. walnut creek police have issued an advisory after at least ten cars were hit in a 24 hour period last weekend. police say the thieves appear to be targeting hondas and toyotas in apartment complex parking lots. drivers and concord say they're seeing the same trend. and in petaluma, police say at least ten cars have been hit since sunday. i've lived here for less than a year and i've seen three instances already where we walk outside and random cars are just sitting on bricks. police are urging drivers to stay alert, try to park in
