bart. the transit agency says new numbers show that overall crime is decreasing and that news comes just as ridership is on the upswing. nbc bay area's velena jones is at the orinda bart station to ask commuters, do they see a difference? reporter bart commuters like lucy deja say they're feeling safer using the system, and that's good news for an agency that's been focusing on safety improvements and increasing resources. it's relatively safe sometimes. when i had like a late night class, it could get a little sketchy. but in my experience, it's not that bad. bart says new numbers show overall crime is down systemwide by 15%, and violent crime has decreased from 263 to 236 incidents compared to the same time last year. property crime is also down double digits. commuters we spoke to say they think increased ridership is playing a role in the safer ride. i think when you just have more people in the system, it feels like some of the challenges aren't as as prevalent. bart confirms ridership

will bart's planned extension to san jose be safe for riders? vta is in charge of this construction, which is already underway, but critics, including bart's former top safety engineer and bart board members, are sounding the alarm. they say that design of the project may be trading safety for convenience. here's one potential problem. it's how far it goes underground. the tunnel itself will be the san jose tunnel will be twice as deep as the tunnel in oakland. vta says the design will be more efficient to build and will be less disruptive to downtown businesses. but critics say that the design is not going to meet safety standards. passengers have to be able to get to a safe space within six minutes, and critics in the emergency say the station escalators will be shut down. that means you have to go up stairs that will force passengers to climb the equivalent of eight flights to get out, while emergency crews like firefighters, will be trying to use the same escalators to go in the opposite direction. these two forces are going to be running in
