. >> next on book tv, barton swain talks about his experience as a speechwriter for former south carolina mark sanford. >> good evening, thank you all for coming. >> i want to talk a few minutes about the writing of not my first book, but my first book that people might actually read. it is my second book, the speechwriter. it is about almost four years i spent as a communications advisor or speechwriter for the governor south carolina. you will notice i don't use his aim of the book and i'll talk for a minute about why i did that. if i was going to give this talk a title it would be how to overthink a memoir. i didn't know how i would do it for a long time. curiously, i knew knew i would write something about my experience there within may be weeks of taking the job. that is true for a variety of reasons, number one it is politics. politics is a crazy business with a lot of sanity and backstabbing, and crazy allegiances that lends itself to writing a book. another is that my boss, would be fair to say was a difficult person to work for that is true in an extreme way, not just your averag
