the rsf answered directly to bashir.in speeches and public speeches, "this is my protection." and there is one speech where bashir said that the best decision he made was forming the rapid support forces. in time, he may have revised that assessment because in 2019, bashir�*s fear became real. the army deposed him with the support of the rsf. civilian protests had applied pressure too. a power—sharing agreement between civilian and military leaders was supposed to lead to civilian rule — but it didn't. in 2021, the army seized power, "to avoid civil war," it said. but in april this year, a civil war arrived. because tensions between the army and the rsf boiled over. and by this point the rsf was much more than a militia. this is alex de waal, an expert on sudanese politics. they control sudan's most lucrative gold mines and they export gold to dubai. they're a mercenary outfit. they've rented out their fighters to fight in yemen, more recently in libya. they are looting machine and they get support from russia, formerly

nada bashir has been closely following all of this. what has the israeli military said it will do if the hezbollah attacks on the northern border of israel continue? >> we've been hearing repeated warnings now from israeli officials with regard to the escalation in hostilities. and we've seen the exchange of shelling from hezbollah on wednesday. the israeli military confirmed that it had carried out an airstrike along the border region in southern lebanon saying that they had targeted a hezbollah site there. national media later confirming that three people had been killed in that strike. hezbollah later confirming that at least one of those killed was a hezbollah fighter. and there is mounting concern that this could trigger another escalation in tensions between both israel and lebanon. we heard from israeli foreign ministry saying that they are looking at two possible options. a political solution to the escalation or a military sol solution. and that would be to remove hezbollah from the border region entirely. and we've also heard

nada bashir is joining me now in london with the latest on this. good to see you as always. so a close confidant of netanyahu is due to meet with biden administration officials. how far apart are the u.s. and israel when it comes to expectations of the duration and intensity of this war? >> we know that the u.s. officials have been keeping close contact with their counterparts in israel. this is just days of course after u.s. president biden spoke with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu at their 17th call since the war began. but of course we are hearing somewhat mixed messages from either side. we know of course that the u.s. has been putting pressure on the israeli government to move towards what is being described as a lower intensity phase of the war. they haven't outright called for a ceasefire just yet, but there has been building pressure from the biden administration. just last week the white house told reporters that the israeli government had assured the biden administration that they would begin to move towards that lower intensity phase. no clear time line

nada bashir is in london. why did he not ask for a cease-fire? what is the u.s.ition that they hold on to here? >> well, look, richard, the biden administration remains steadfastly committed to backing the israeli government. and as we know from the get-go, from the beginning of this war, the israeli government has rejected calls for a humanitarian cease-fire. they have repeatedly said that they remain steadfastly committed to their goals of eradicating hamas' military kpa capabilities, to ensuring that hamas can no longer pose a threat to israel. the israeli government has been clear, they feel that a humanitarian cease-fire will in the words of one senior adviser, provide a lifeline to hamas. they feel this will be an opportunity for hamas to regroup, to re-convene, and to gain more power. and of course, gain an advantage on the battlefield, on the ground. now, the biden administration has committed its support to the israeli government. we saw that u.n. resolution adopted on friday. of course, the u.s. abstained from that vote. they called for harsher language
