there are a few hotels that have individual bathrooms. the majority of them are shared on the floor down the hall. we have always i've been at the mission sro for over 5 years, always large percent are seniors. we began the conversation about two years ago and the conversation was about the changing needs of people. a lot of people here in san francisco -a lot of low-income tenants - get locked into their home. that can be a good thing, it can be a bad thing at the same time. a lot of people when they move in, to choose a home a place that meets their needs, as they live there for years, as people get older, the disabilities change, obviously they become more difficult for people to live in these buildings. the way that the market is here in san francisco with rents going up and up, and rent control design here for folks who have been in their homes for years, is not a whole lot of options other than to stay in the same place and try to make modifications, and make that home work for their needs. a background on sros: three of them serve

we get many complaints about bathrooms being unsafe to use. myself, i live in a sro hotel. i know in my building the floors in the showers and outside the shower stalls are real smooth tile. we have no grab bars and my landlord says absolutely not, they are not going to put them in unless it's made mandatory. they would save a lot of money and so would probably the city and other services such as medicare, medical, if these grab bars were installed. we would have fewer people going to the hospital and it's just vitally necessary to have them as well as phone jacks in the rooms. there's only 5 or 6 people in our building that have phones because management and owners won't put in phone jacks. they say you want a phone, you pay the cost. we're not going to. so -- and most of the people in the building are on limited income like social security, ssi, that kind of thing, can't afford the $150 to $200 to install a phone jack just to have a phone. so i'm pleading with you, please help us get this legislation passed so we can be safe. thank you. >> thank you for your comments. >>

in the recommendations, we suggested having grab bars in bathrooms. in the server we found that less than half of seniors and people with disabilities that we talked to reported having grab bars. not everyone is coming out and saying we need grab bars. people don't necessarily realize that is a problem until people fall. we know that is a major source of injury. in terms of the financial impact going back to the city to say look at the money we are spending on hospital bills on people who slip and falls when that can be prevented by having grab bars in bathrooms. that is one thing we want to work on, and working phone jack along with affordable telephone service. working phone jacks are required by state law; a residential hotel, tourist hotel is required to have that. pretend that i did not say that. in sros, every room is required have a working phone jack. people are dealing with a lot of isolation. i mentioned people with disabilities who may be in the room where it is hard to get out. the staircase to be rickety. the elevator may be broken. there

additionally the bathrooms on the left side have been totally refurbished. i guarantee, i was there last friday and they are usable. and new paint on there and replacement of the windows and doors. these are the replacement windows. the crew working there. and replacement of windows on the outside. making it a presentable place, one that can be a value to the community. next i want to talk about abandoned dock removal. on the abandoned docks, there are some docks behind the vegetation there. those were old docks that were reachable from the shore line. and they were derelict over the years and eyesore. and we worked close with rec and park to get those removed. we took care of the permitting for the removal and rec and park provided the manpower to get those out of the lake. and now that corner of the lake doesn't have floating eyesores out there. i think that's a big step forward. on the recreation front, rec and park has been actively programming recreation there during the summer and fall. classes and kayaking and active recreation around the lake. and th
