"today in the bay's" bob redell live at lick observatory on "today in the bay." happy you're not wearing a hard hat. >> i've got my fingers crossed. the comet discovered not hitting earth any time soon. what's going on nasa on the search of other meteor showers. they know about 60 of them across the night sky. they believe there are about 300 more. for roughly the past year they set up three video camera monitoring stations monitoring skies of california, like this one at lick observatory. they have been looking for meteor showers. on february 4th, one caught an image on the screen. it shows a streak of light across the sci. they found six streaks of light that night. that's trail dust from a previously unknown comet significant for two reasons. one, that comet was previously unknown. two, it is potentially hazardous to us earthlings. this doctor made the discovery. first, your reaction seeing the image, aha. >> i was very surprised to see this. i was not expecting to pick any of these showers up. this shower was not there last year. it was just this year it show

it jolted some people out of bed in the east bay. it was felt all over the bay area. take a look at the seismograph from overnight. it was a 3.6 quake that was occurring at 11:36 p.m. the epicenter was felt from danville to san francisco to marin county. according to the usgs it had a depth of between 5 and 9 miles. and then there was an aftershock as you mentioned 2.3 magnitude about 5 minutes later. these earthquakes obviously significantly smaller than that earthquake in virginia yesterday that 5.8, the strongest quake to hit that region in several decades. now, it's quite different from what we feel around here. scientists say one of the convenient climate. the earth is warmer here, which means the energy doesn't travel as far. here's another reason. >> these plates are constantly moving and jostling each other and bumping into each other. the east coast is not along a plate boundary. it's in the middle of a plate. >> reporter: now, scientists say unlike california quakes, the virginia quake hasn't had many aftershocks and probably based on the fault's history it

crime is up almost everywhere in the bay area. even skyrocketing in some parts of the bay area. it's been a deadly start to this year. some alarming figures to digest. through the end of july there have been 71 homicides in oakland and more than 300 reported shootings. oakland had 94 homicides in 2010. san jose has already passed last year's total of 20 homicides, and in san francisco, 29 people were killed. and there were 50 homicides in the city last year. >>> with that in mind, thousands of people across the bay area are taking to the streets to take back their neighborhoods. >> national night out means more than just a block party and a barbecue. it's designed to unite communities and make the streets a little bit safer. jodi hernandez cc joins us from west oakland. hard to believe it started 28 years ago. is it working? are there any tangible results here? >> reporter: raj, people out here will tell you yes. they say since they've banded together several years ago, they have stopped a number of crimes from taking place. now though the national night parties don't officially

the south bay and east bay mirrored that trend, generally speaking. alameda county had a dropout rate of 19%, santa clara, 17%. you go up the peninsula, and into sf, only about 1 in 10 students quit school over those four years so they had a much lower dropout rate. if you break it down by race, african-americans statewide were most likely to drop out. their rate was 30%. followed by latinos, then whites and finally asians. this report is significant, not only because it shows how much work needs to be done in the education of our children, but it's the first time the state has tracked students from their freshman through senior years, even if they moved between districts and schools. now, those numbers are averages. you can go online and search for specific districts and schools, which is what we did, just to see how stark the differences can be. to give you an example. so, for instance, here in the south bay, almost everyone graduated in the los gatos saratoga union high school district. the dropout rate less than 2%. then you travel to the union ba
