nbc's bay area kimberly tere spoke with the family of the bay area boy who survived the attack, and what a story he has to tell. kimberly? >> reporter: victor martin got away lucky with only a bite to his ankle. he has been treated and released and is already headed home. expected here at oakland international airport tomorrow evening. victor martin of richmond was among a group of teenagers taking a survival skills course in the alaskan wilderness when a brown bear with her cub attacked. >> he said the bear had chased him, and he fell down and started kicking, and all he could do is kick and pray. >> in this case, it sounds like they just stumbled upon a bear. it was the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: it happened saturday night about 120 miles north of anchorage. there were no instructors with the group, who told state troopers they were crossing a river single file when those at the front of the line screamed about a bear coming towards them. the two teenagers at the front got the worst of the assault. >> thankfully this was a group of kids that was prepared. they were out

nbc bay area's chris sanchez is in the newsroom. you talked with the wife of one fisherman who was rescued. >> right. i talked with her a couple times today. i just most recently got off the phone with the wife of one of the survivors lucky enough to have landed in the water near a life raft. his wife says he is heartbroken because he now knows two of his friends of 40 years are among the fishermen missing. when he called his wife after the rescue she had no idea what he'd been through. >> he said i wanted to let you know i was all right. why wouldn't you be? he said, haven't you heard? i said no. he said, well, we were capsized. >> reporter: 66-year-old li ikegami was on a fishing trip with friends he'd known for 40 years. though this wasn't their first trip, it was the first time he slept on board the boat. >> he and some others were on one side of the boat and the boat flipped over very fast. he said they were thrown into the sea. he said he was fortunate enough that when he was thrown in he came up right by a raft. >> reporter:

live in san jose, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. >>> new at 5:00, an update on a gruesome story out of the east bay. we now know the name of the woman whose body was found burning in the middle of a quiet street. the alameda county medical examiner's office says she is 21-year-old monica rores alferro of union city. her body was found yesterday on ivan hoe road in oakland's exclusive rock ridge neighborhood. she was most likely killed somewhere else, then taken to the rock -- the neighborhood and lit on fire. officers say the suspects probably chose the neighborhood just because it is secluded and dark during those hours. >>> the streets of a popular east bay business district may be a little safer tonight. three months after the death of a community leader, oakland's fruitvail district is more equipped to watch out for crime. the city council purchased some 30 cameras to be installed inside and outside of local businesses that previously couldn't afford them. the effort to reduce the high level of crime in that fruitveil ar -- fruitvale neighborhood. the full access of th

it was hot throughout the bay area. the east bay was the hottest with livermore at 94. 93 in pleasanton. 64 up in san francisco with 83 in san rafael. still holding on to norms in the east bay. 73 in livermore and our bay side communities cooling off to 50s and 60s at this point because we have this on shore flow and also the fog still sticking at the coastline. for tomorrow, that fog is not going to be strong enough. plenty of heat here on the east bay, looking to be the hottest spot. and we're still tracking the slight chance of maybe some isolated thunderstorms this weekend. it's basically the circulation around this that could bring up moisture on saturday and sunday and pop a few thunderstorms. over the next 48 hours, talking about sunny conditions thursday and friday, hot air continues to build. a few 90s for tomorrow and friday it's warm to hot from the peninsula down to the south bay. it's not very extensive, and by 11:00, 12:00 and 1:00 tomorrow, everyone is expecting sunny skies. another fantastic day with tem

a bay area man out for a day of fun with friends died while vacationing in hawaii. ce say, 22-year-old, of sunnyvale died monday morning after being swept into the ocean in the puna area big island. climbing on a rocky cliff with friends in the hawaiian paradise park subdivision when a wave knocked him into the ocean and carried him 100 yards out to sea where his body was found. the second bay area man to die in hawaii in the past two days. on saturday, 44-year-old david potts died when a wave washed him into a blowhole at a point on maui. >>> first there were layoffs now a lawsuit. former employees of mi pueblo market are willing to sue the market after they were let go. 20 former employees held a rally in san jose to announce their intention to file a lawsuit. what do they want? their overtime pay. pay for missed meal breaks. mi pueblo laid off 150 in january because of the economic downturn. the family owned grocery store says employees are treated fairly. and says the threat of a lawsuit stems from the fact that the stores are not unionized. >> some 60 million pe

what this mean foster bay area -- means for the bay area. >> governor brown signed the budget and cutspeed rail funding. muni won't get $27 million, bard is out 35 million, caltrans is not worried about losing $4 million because it can reapply next year. muni was planning use the fund for a subway project. once complete it will connect downtown san francisco to chinatown. it was just a small portion needed from $1.6 billion strong. the governor used the line item veto. he felt it was not be used for high speed rail project connecting the bay area to southern california. bart spokesperson said the funning is crucial to replace the transportation agency aging rail car system that's supposed to help those getting on to bart. when high speed rail is built, our train cars need to carry the excess passengers we don't expect. i don't think the governor realized that we were months into projects that may perhaps have nothing to do with high speed rail. he may be right. i think we got thrown in by accident. >> here at headquarters officials are planning meet with the governor and hopefully cha

this is bay area news at 7:00. >> good evening. it is tuesday, july 5. i am gasia mikaelian, and this is bay area news at 7:00. >>> a case of pesticide exposure. three vineyard workers were exposed to pesticides. jana katsuyama is investigating. >> reporter: well, gasia, we learned that all three of the workers are women and they were treated and released at 12:30 p.m. now that county has launched an investigation into what went wrong. hazmat crews had to decontaminated three vineyard workers before they were allowed into the medical center. the workers have been pruning a vineyard on the 4000 block of big ridge road. it appears a neighboring injured had applied pesticide overnight. >> there was enough breeze to cause a drift of the spray. >> reporter: the three women and a fourth worker had respiratory problems of the chemicals include sylguard and alticore. all three chemicals are commonly used in the valley. >> we are in a quarantine area and we are trying to eradicate the european grapevine moth. >> reporter: vineyard owners are required to reports p
