right now at least the more intense showers which dropped pea-sized hail across parts of the bay area starting to shut down. we'll start off showing you around the east bay. oakland, showers around the hilltops. looking at mostly cloudy skies, dry over downtown, but still a few hilltop showers. back from the radar we'll take you into the south bay. out towards mt. hamilton and around the santa cruz mountains, which is where you're looking right there live now off to the southwest of downtown san jose, showers rolling off the summit there near highway 17. and we will continue to see those showers trying to spill over towards los gatos and areas south of san jose. you notice here as we put this into motion, look at all the red showing up on the radar. some of the stronger cells earlier today dropped pea-sized hail near san jose and did spawn up a funnel cloud and tornado near stockton. the transition tonight will be going for the showers to decrease short-term, and then the rain to increase by tomorrow morning as you watch round two of these storm systems coming on in. and yes, another

most of the bay area seeing winds of 15 to 30 miles per hour around the east bay. looking at lighter areas of rain and that's going to follow you from castro valley over to dublin, pleasanton, and miles canyon road. as we get over towards fremont and san jose, you're starting to see bands of rain come on through. nothing too heavy just yet. in the los altos area, there's showers moving towards palo alto, but the main event is still obviously here sitting offshore. once you get into the orange and red on the radar like we're seei seeing, we'll see strong, gusty winds. we have rain, we have wind, we got that this morning. this is a little different. we're looking at a chance of stronger thunder today between now and sunrise. here come the winds out of the south. these will stay very gusty and crease as the front blasts on through. temperatures right now, it is mild outside, mostly still in the mid-50s, so the timeline with this storm, windy for everyone right now. periods of rain increasing tonight and some of those thunderstorms could be unusually strong for the bay

rob mayeda who is tracking this developing storm from our nbc bay area weather center. rob? >>> raj, right now the heaviest impact with this storm right across the east bay and into the tri-valley. let's show you how it looks. outside around oakland, light rain falling. the oakland a's set to get their home game started after 7:00 tonight. looks like they'll be dealing with light rain. as we go from oakland, this is one place that's been getting hit by pretty good downpours. now the heavier rain has moved off pleasanton. that traffic heading towards you northbound and even southbound, some rooster tails out there on the road. that is from some ponding that is taking place from downpours that occurred within the last half hour or so. now we'll take you in a the south bay, san jose seeing pockets of mainly light to moderate rain at times. as we take you outside you can see the gray skies in an already slow commute this time of day made slower. now the system respons rle for the rain here is a pretty large one and the interesting thing about the moisture instead of going west to

there's 40,000 acres of shoreline here in the bay area, a lot of it in the south bay and on the peninsula that are at risk threatening the campuses of tech giants like facebook and yahoo!. some areas are 13 feet below sea level. so later this morning senator dianne feinstein is expected to announce a new partnership between government and private groups, one that will try to raise $1 billion to fix this problem along the bay area shorelines. that money would be used to replace the berms with new levees. the berms, which were built to contain the salt ponds were never meant for use in flood control. this is not going to happen overnight. it will take about ten years to raise that money and also tie into the greater project of restoring a lot of these shorelines back to their natural wetlands. reporting live, i'm bob redell. >>> it has been decades in the making and now construction will soon begin which will connect the south bay to b.a.r.t. stephanie is live in fremont with more details on today's ground-breaking ceremony. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla.
