bay. and then one to two inches in the area shaded in yellow. we've already seen that and we're talking additional amounts of rain for the north bay. in the coastal mountains three-plus inches. once again mt. tam at 2.8, so we may see even more there. look at pinecrest and some of the ski resorts. the forecast still is putting down quite a bit of snow for the sierra. an additional 29 inches of snow for twin bridges. and some of those crests may have some really high wind gusts over 100 miles an hour. squaw expecting about 25 inches of snow. and that goes through the weekend. so look at all the microclimates today. once again those temperatures holding steady in the upper 50s to lower 60s. and then we'll have at times a little bit of sunshine and some scattered showers moving through. heading into the futurecast once again i want to show you what happens this weekend once this system rolls out. we will take a little bit of a break and then saturday another one moves in late saturday night into early sunday. may cover us with more rain. additional

pleasant day in the bay area just some clouds and the numbers on the mild side mostly in the low 60s right now. as we look toward the bay bridge, that's the storm that's moving due east and will be really a factor for the pacific northwest. it will be a factor for us, too. low pressure on approach most of it ahead north of us. heaviest rain stays well up into oregon and washington but it's still going to be a stormy early thursday in the bay area. so tomorrow will begin wet. futurecast shows the dead on cue in time for the morning commute this is at 6 a.m. we have the front passing through and it's going to bring with it a few heavy cells at times and then that passes through. in the wake of that showers from time to time tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening before finally beginning to dry out by friday morning. so the front comes through on- again, off-again showers, some of them coming down pretty good, the potential for thunderstorms exists too later in the day. amounts? more in the north than in the south. ukiah gets almost 2", san jose in the south about a half inch. pleasanto

we're expecting pretty much the same thing as this moves into the bay area by the middle of the week. this is what we're expecting to happen. a couple of waves of rain and it starts out on wednesday for the north bay. the rest of the bay area will just be some clouds on wednesday and then it starts to roll to the south and by early thursday morning, all of us will see that with some rain and some gusty winds. a look at the future cast, this gives us a clear idea of what the radar and the satellite could look like. here we are on wednesday morning. 3:00, we see scattered showers in the north bay and then it does get heavier and it fizzles out as it moves to the south. that's initially. and then all of this covers the radar as we head into the morning on thursday. and it looks like it pours all throughout the day on thursday and rolling over to the sierra with some snow. the rain forecast brings the south bay about half an inch of rain and then look at the north bay. close to 2 inches of rain, but we're not done there. there will be another system moving in by the weekend. in total, thi

you'll see rain across the central bay area. pressing towards the south by 10 or 11:00. the rainfall projections right now should be highest up around some of these north bay hill tops. through 1:00, mostly a accumulations there. san jose unfortunately a little rain shadowed as air drops down into the valley. temperatures tomorrow in the mid-50s into san jose. no matter where you go you'll see numbers in the mid-50s for tomorrow. the trend through monday and tuesday, a bit warmer for temperatures. here comes storm number two, monday into tuesday you'll begin to see the rain fly again, north bay will probably see the rain monday into tuesday. then a break coming on wednesday. so we've got a third system coming in for christmas, and that's good news, because even though we've been having a lot of rain lately, we've had such a dry november that we're still running about 30 to 60% average from oakland towards the north day. the snowpack looks better than last year. the pattern has a new forward, it looks very favorable. every one to two days we'll see this system dropping in.

you'll want to make sure you watch nbc bay area that morning to get an update. e look at the rainfall totals what the next round will bring in, anywhere from a half inch to over an inch for the north bay. still looking like still some pretty good rainfall totals. and looking at a live picture from truckee, the snow weighing down on those pine trees and also in pine kret, the skiers are out there enjoying this as the skies slowly clear. it looks there will be snow coming down through at least monday with additional snowfall totals up to 26 inches in kirkwood and king veil up to 22 inches. i've seen those reports there and some of the higher ones like kirkwood have already had 24 inches of snow, unreal. we're getting that closer to where we should be for the percentage of normal for this time of year. and look at all of the microclimates, today cool. upper 50s but we get a little bit more sunshine. breezy winds saturday. that will be the nicest day of the weekend to get out and finish putting up christmas decorations and running around. on sunday, once again that's

light rain especially around the central bay area, north san jose at 11:00 sunny and mild, but up in the north bay leaden overcast. the lens is wet so is the road. so we'll get evening showers and clearing with freezing temperatures again tonight. and patchy valley fog and frost. overnight lows tonight will be below freezing at livermore, san jose at 34. and mountain view down to 35. you will notice that if you go far enough to the east, you know fairfield, livermore, it really gets cold. and, in fact, freezing temperatures caused black ice before dawn today in the east bay. cars spun out on highway 24 on the fish ranch road ramp. it was closed to allow the ice to melt. it's possible to repeat tomorrow with all the moisture around and with slick roads. there's going to be major changes coming our way next week. we'll talk about that when we cover the forecast in a few minutes. >>> for the first time this season, the state department of water resources today plunged a long metal tube into the snow to measure the sierra snowpack. kpix 5's emily turner was there for it and from the looks

and then now in the eastern portion of the bay area, that's where we're seeing some heavy downpours from san leandro through hayward also right around the 580680 corridor. leaving the san ramon area crow canyon along highway 680 towards the sunol grade. some areas have only light rain. more moderate on the peninsula and the san mateo bridge. and we see that the golden gate bridge at this hour is rain- free. however, we have had a lot of precipitation there this morning and the winds are the second side of the story. wind gusts to 45 and 50 miles per hour. air temperature very mild right now but as the cold front passes, cooler air is going to filter in so it will be cooler this afternoon. winds are ramping up to 15 in fremont, 16 san ramon, 17 in vallejo, 18 in san rafael, 20 to 23 from napa to fairfield. those are sustained winds. the gusts are up to 50 miles per hour. rain and gusty winds for the morning commute. we'll see a little bit of a lull in activity towards lunchtime and the potential of thunderstorms this afternoon. we'll talk more about that coming up. but right now, let's se

nbc bay area's christie smith is live in orinda tonight. quick work by police tonight? reporter: yeah, that's right. orinda police say an alert neighbor noticed a suspicious car in the area near where this home invasion took place. police were able to quickly check motion-activated camera. they have about 12 of them installed in the city and they say that made a big difference. >> we're better now that we've heard the good news. >> reporter: karen yim was relieved to hear of the arrest. tuesday an armed man who police say kicked in her door demanding money from the nanny then pistol whipped the woman with the family's 5-year-old daughter just feet away. >> really emotional. unbelievable at first. scary. scared. concerned. >> it was a bit of a shocker. you know, you don't move into orinda and expect this, but i think my wife and i are taking it pretty well for what has happened. >> reporter: the family's porsche similar to this one was stolen in the attack. now the family's taking extra steps to secure their home. orinda police say a break came when an alert neighbor rep

and that really replicates what we're seeing here throughout a lot of the bay area tonight. e head through tomorrow morning, we'll begin to see showers develop. best chance of those showers developing the north bay and also san francisco and the possibility of spotty rainfall from the east bay down to the south bay. let's go ahead and get a look at the storm system. the main zone of moisture is still off to the north. but you can see this moisture line is still very, very strong. so we're just waiting on this to drop down then eventually we'll get that rainfall in here. so let's go ahead and pinpoint the heaviest portion of this storm and when it's going to start. you can see the cold front begins to drop down at 1:30 in the afternoon on friday. up into marin, napa, and sonoma counties. here's the thing about this. we may have some isolated urban flooding in the north bay tomorrow. from 1:30 through about 4:00, it keeps some of the heaviest pockets going from point rays over toward napa. not only isolated thor ed thund and heavier rain at time but maybe small hail with how co

some chilly temperatures for tonight not only there but all across the bay area. the first day of 2016 looks pretty much the same as we end the year. in the low 50s, mid-50s in the peninsula and south bay. into the upper 50s for the south bay on saturday. we still stay dry there, but some showers most likely moving in to the forecast on sunday. and it's because of this. there's a couple of storm systems out in the pacific. here's round one. you can see that long line of clouds. and then we have a swirl of clouds here with the large storm system that continues to gain in strength into the next few days. so that a bigger concern. this first line looks like this is the way it plays out on computer models. a line of showers moving in by early sunday morning. and much of that fizzles out as it moves inland. and then right behind that the next storm system moves in early on tuesday. and then we'll start to see the scattered showers and then that rain wrapping up on wednesday. the early rainfall estimates at this point give us at least about a half of an inch, up to an in

we had this thunderstorm rolling in across a good section of the bay area. just in case you missed it, a lot of people in the east bay woke up to scenes like this as hail covered the ground. some two to three inches high after this thunderstorm that rolled through at about 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning, as the hail lasted for about two to five minutes. this is from our sidewalk right at our front door. just unbelievable. that is definitely a sign that el nino is here, and the storms being impacted el nino are going to be here to stay as we head throughout january, february, and also into march. a look at the doppler radar right now. you'll see we have started to slow down from the activity. there is a little bit of isolated storms offshore, but the general trend is we're at least calming down for the next 24 hours before we get the next storm moving back in. skies are darkening in the south bay. currently 55. east bay at 52. we have had a few spotty showers in san francisco and also the north bay. so what can you expect for tomorrow morning? it is going to be

're talking just to the north of sonoma county. getting to the north coast, may see 5 to 8 inches of rain up here in the areas you see here in yellow. bay area right now looks like the north bay could pick up 1 to 3 inches of rain and less into san jose. all of that coming through with that thursday storm right there. a lot of wind. we'll have winds up to 40 miles per hour on thursday. so both wind and rain. then as we head towards the weekend now, starting to look like that rain may get started as early as saturday. so the two storms coming in wednesday for the north bay. everybody gets into it for thursday. and yes, the second system coming in for the weekend. and look at the temperatures with the weekend system. highs in the mid-50s, which is great news for being a big snow producer in the sierra. could see two to three feet of snow. a lot of ski resorts could double their snowpack as we go lew the next seven to ten days. a close look at that coming up in the next half hour that. >>
