felt all over the bay area. nbc bay area scott budman talked to the experts about where the quake hit. he's in san jose with the story. scott. >> reporter: good evening. the 3.9 quake was felt here in san jose. two parts north and south over the bay area. it wasn't strong but it carried well. >> the quakes last night were on the fault. >> reporter: this map at the u.s. geological survey show where is the earthquake hit. >> you live in california, you kind of get used to it. >> reporter: this map shows the quake measuring 3.9 was felt across much of the bay area. >> i was in los gatos. >> this one seemed to carry quite far. >> reporter: geophysicists says because it was a fairly shallow earthquake, it carries. >> it's a pretty typical earthquake for the fault which advistend tends to produce a lot of small to moderate et quaarthquakes. >> reporter: it doesn't cause any damage but gave us a lot to talk about. >> a few shakes. just little shakes. not bad. >> reporter: usgs says there was an after shock in san jose

check out our nbc bay area seismograph. it captured the quake. felt in san francisco, san anselmo and in the south bay. we definitely felt it in the newsroom. a quick noticeable shaking and then it was over. i said wow, did you feel that? that was an earthquake. >> and everybody said yeah. >> a 3.1 hit east of morgan hill around 7:00 p.m. no reports of damage or injuries. san jose mayor sam liccardo has been tweeting since the quake hit around 10:30. his latest tweet reads prepare for a more serious earthquake by reading tips from female map. >> it's a small earthquake. but you feel it. and it gets you thinking. and that's a good good idea. there are things you're supposed to do ahead of an earthquake. >> we were in the makeup room together, do you have an evacuation plan. i haven't thought of that. >> yes. >> i'm just going to tuck, cover, right? take cover? >> a having a 72-hour kit of supplies. >> water expires. you should update your water. >> good advice. yeah. >> okay. that's it. we're going to wend the earthquake. hopefully it will be a smo

nbc bay area responds next. berkeley woman who paid 450- dollars to ship a box that never >>> nbc bay area responds to a berkeley woman who paid $450 to ship a box that never showed up. >> and she couldn't get a refund for the shipping fee. our response team helped her out. here is consumer investigator chris chmura. >> melanie chu shipped a box of books to germany from her local u.p.s. store on telegraph avenue in berkeley. now, the store used dhl to ship it. well, that box later was lost in transit. melanie got a $75 refund. that's the amount she insured the box for, but, of course, she also wanted a refund for the $450 she paid to ship it, the shipping costs. dhl told her it refunded the u.p.s. store for the shipping and she had to get the money from the u.p.s. store. melanie tried that but no luck. so she reached out to us for help. this u.p.s. store is independently operated so we contacted it directly. the result, sort refunded melanie her $450. a spokesman told us it apologized for the delay in refunding

but in other parts of the bay area, it's even colder. some of those north and east bay valleys, inland valleys, that's where it's below freezing right now. we are going to see those numbers continue to dip to 7:00 when the freeze warning expires. santa rosa now 29. 30 in livermore. it's relatively mild in san francisco at 43 degrees. so an area of high pressure is sitting over the coast and that's what's keeping us high and dry over the next several days. it's good weather for santa and his reindeer. we are not seeing any major rain event in our forecast. that low though that's just east of us is bringing some rain showers to parts of the south in texas so if you are traveling that way maybe today you could see some travel delays there. three things to remember before you go. clear cold start. sunny and cold this afternoon. and then this weekend that weather pattern we have been seeing won't budge. we are staying dry. brisk and sunny. it's a nice winter day. but definitely cold to start.
