now, here are the latest icu capacity numbers for the bay area. the most dramatic change is from the weekend in santa clara county. it went from 12% to 6% availability. alameda county faring the best at 33%. san francisco also doing pretty good at 31%. contra costa, 12%. solano county, 9%. not all the counties are updating their numbers daily. marin county also shows no icu availability. it's using a different calculation than the state to determine its percentage of available beds. zero icu capacity means, though, that the county's standard icu beds are full and they have begun usining so-called surge beds. >>> the vaccine is arriving on the heels of the pfizer drug. marin county slated to receive 3,100 doses today. santa clara county expecting more than 39,000 doses tomorrow. alameda county does not expect its first doses before thursday, and officials have no idea how many they're going to get. the county's vaccine advisory group is meeting tonight to get input on vaccine prioritization. we expect to learn more about doses headed to all nine ba

across the bay area covid cases are soaring. today the south bay saw its highest number of cases since the pandemic began. a record 801 new infections in santa clara county in a day. and on the peninsula, 310 new cases in san maw tteo county. the state is strongly recommending all hospitals test its employees. it wants them tested on a weekly basis, all patients tested who are admitted. so as testing ramps up in hospitals we're one step closer to approval for not one but two covid vaccines. today moderna applied for the fda approval, and the pfizer vaccine hearing before the fda is two weeks away. then comes distribution. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd with a look at how fast that could happen. >> reporter: the rush is on at ucsf. the fda is very close to making a decision on the pfizer vaccine. >> we know the fda is going to meet on december 10th, the third day and it's said always after that decision is made that people will be able to get vaccines. >> reporter: the drug and injection sites will be ready to go. ucsf and zuckerberg

we're live in san francisco, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >>> kaiser medical centers in the bay area also expected to receive their first doses of the vaccine. they're going to receive it on wednesday and thursday. you're looking at a vaccine storage freezer which was installed over the weekend. kaiser expects the first shipment to be limited. it says the vaccine will be distributed according to cdc and state guidelines, and of course it will prioritize health care workers at the highest risk of exposure. >>> okay. so it is great that the vaccine is arriving. unfortunately the coronavirus is surging. cases continue to be at a record high across the state. what you see behind me, 30,000 new cases confirmed, the third highest day of the pandemic, and this is a terrible number. positivity rate for us now at an all-time high of 10.5%. in santa clara county, 1,200 new cases confirmed. so thom was talking about icu beds, right? let's check about the availability in more detail about the bay area. so you can see here that marin, santa clara, and san mateo are all in those red zones, right?

in the bay area hospital icu beds are filling up fast. as of this morning there were just 35 icu beds left in all of santa clara county, but it's the staffing shortage that is the biggest concern. today governor newsom outlined what the state is doing to address the problem. >> we are actually looking overseas, interestingly, to potentially recruit some staffing. >> he says the state has already added 80 additional paramedics and emts, 50 national guard members and asked the department of defense to provide an additional 200 healthcare workers. the state is also making changes to get quarantined nurses and doctors back to work sooner. >> during our critical staffing shortages, we now are up to seven, not a ten-day quarantine for health care workers and emergency response workers and social service workers that have been exposed and as long as they test negative on day five or later. >> reporter: in the bay area, special centers are preparing to handle patients who were not acutely ill including here at the craneway pavilion in richmond wh

well, it looks like the majority of the bay area is expected to remain dry, but there is a possibility some drizzle in the north bay. first things first, let's talk about the daytime highs. temperatures in the low to mid 60s in this afternoon so we're a few degrees cooler than yesterday. now, another thing to keep in mind, spare the air alert is in effect for today. no wood burning allowed, we have unhealthy air quality in the north bay and the south bay expected for today. notice the time bar in the corner. we have the increase in cloud cover so we're starting out pretty clear and then that green that you see there is the possibility of seeing a little bit of rain mainly though drizzle for portions of the north bay. the rest of the bay area is going to remain dry. no measurable amounts of rain expected out of this system. just an increase in that cloud cover which is good because it will help sort of track us back up into our humidity. so it will help up bring up the humidity because as you know we have been dry. we are in need of the rain and then we have a chance coming tomorrow nig

let's take that and watch that move through the bay area through morning. hat goes through about 2:00 in the afternoon before the first showers clear the south bay. as the first line clears in the early afternoon, another organized line of showers moves in for late afternoon on sunday. the take away from this is sunday is the more noticeably rainy day. you will notice it because it is coming through the heart of the day. the first system tonight happens while we are sleeping. if we put the totals, we have picked up about a half inch of rain on the higher end of the forecast. this is total for both days. maybe a half inch for the north bay, we can see close to that really anywhere in the bay area. sonoma should see higher rainfall totals and that tells us the high end. a half inch of rain. it's not a soaking storm. we will hopefully see better storms throughout the course of the winter but this will be a good start for what's been a long absence. we haven't gotten widespread rain since the middle of november. snow in the sierra is a good news story. we'll pic

this week, we saw a lot of rain over the bay area.ow the rain has moved out making it a nice day to end the week. meteorologist kari hall is trer here to track the we could weather. >> we will see more of this weather continuing even into next week. we are seeing in san jose clear skies here as we head in to san francisco, more of the same. we started out with a clear sky this morning so we are not looking at much in the way of any change as we go into the weekend. as we head over toward walnut creek we are seeing our temperatures starting out cool but we will see it make it into the upper 50s and hold steady there with sunshine today. some spots only reaching into the low 60s but this is about normal as we go into the end of the year. the end of december. so we are going to have more of the seasonable weather, sunshine and steady weather pattern going into the weekend as well as early next week. we may see a little bit of a christmas gift headed our way in the terms of rain coming in so i'll talk more about that, as well as the tempe

we still have that right flood warning in effect for most of the bay area. all of the areas highlighted in red here. even though the wind is starting to relax, we are still looking at incredibly dry air in place with those northerly winds. watching that very closely for you. we have record dry fuels and vegetation out there. this is a big concern. the high fire danger with that ridge of high pressure to our west and that low pressure system now to our southeast. with that tight pressure gradient, the northerly winds are just pushing right into the bay area. as we head through the day on futurecast, you can see the winds easing but relative humidity on futurecast dropping as we go through the day. our daytime highs are unseasonably warm. it could add to record-breaking highs as we go through our afternoon. mid 60s for the coast. looking at low 70s around the bay. for inland locations, low to mid 70s this afternoon. here we go with that extended forecast as we are looking at mild to warm conditions for tomorrow. the winds will be relaxing as we head through the
