across the bay area covid cases are soaring. today the south bay saw its highest number of cases since the pandemic began. a record 801 new infections in santa clara county in a day. and on the peninsula, 310 new cases in san maw tteo county. the state is strongly recommending all hospitals test its employees. it wants them tested on a weekly basis, all patients tested who are admitted. so as testing ramps up in hospitals we're one step closer to approval for not one but two covid vaccines. today moderna applied for the fda approval, and the pfizer vaccine hearing before the fda is two weeks away. then comes distribution. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd with a look at how fast that could happen. >> reporter: the rush is on at ucsf. the fda is very close to making a decision on the pfizer vaccine. >> we know the fda is going to meet on december 10th, the third day and it's said always after that decision is made that people will be able to get vaccines. >> reporter: the drug and injection sites will be ready to go. ucsf and zuckerberg

here is a look at icu capacity in the bay area, it's around 9%. in san joaquin and southern california it's full because of that the governor is warning those stay at home orders will likely be extended in certain areas as early as today. >> the impact is being felt on the entire hospital system. >> as for the bay area, our current stay at home order lasts through january the 8th. today california health and human services secretary will update us on the state's response to coronavirus. you can watch that live at noon right here on kpix5 and streaming on cbsn bay area. >>> even though local health officials are discouraging any new year gatherings, they know some people are going to do it any way and they have some tips to stay safe if people do choose to gather. that includes gathering outside. opening windows or doors if you are partying inside and wearing masks, staying six feet apart. making separate drink stations and minimizing the number of people present. >> acknowledging the reality of the situation and saying, i prefer you not to gather.

so it's another day no matter where you are across the bay area. if you're an essential worker is you've got to head to work in another part of the bay, it's going to feel like pretty much the same. 57 in martinez and right over to san francisco. by 1:30 in the afternoon we get the possibility of a few showers right over guerneville. but i really think the more widespread action gets here by 10:00 p.m. on wednesday. and at the most part right now widespread coverage of rainfall here by 2:00 a.m. on thursday when a lot of us are sleeping. going to see some of that yellow and orange. that's that heavier pocket of rain as the cold front sweeps through. and we'll start to see that push out by 6:00 a.m. thursday. and for the east bay about a quarter to a half-inch. same thing for the peninsula and the south bay, 0.10 to about a third of an inch. a slight chance of a shower next tuesday. temperatures look very similar here for the inland valleys. more 50s as we roll through the next couple of days. and jessica, winter officially starts next monday at 2:02

that is a good sign, and you can see most of the bay area in that blue color. that's trace amounts to about 0.2 inch. in the north bay we're in this yellow color. that's about a quarter to a half inch right now, so things inching up. sierra snow, we need it for that snowpack. this weekend we could be good for about 5 to maybe 10 inches of snowfall for some of the highest elevations. on miy extends forecast, 50s in san francisco for the next seven days. another shower chance once we hit next wednesday. for the inland valleys, no more 70s on the seven day. we're going with this trend of 50s and 60s for daytime highs. the way things are looking now, we could see the rain chances trend up even more. we've got two important updates, one tonight, one tomorrow. we'll bring you all of that in our weather updates and we're hoping we could see a lot of the bay area get over a half inch. we'll see have to see what the next 24 hours brings us on the new data. >> you mentioned that tahoe snow, but there's a problem. we're not allowed too go to tahoe beginning tomorrow. >> of

in the bay area hospital icu beds are filling up fast. as of this morning there were just 35 icu beds left in all of santa clara county, but it's the staffing shortage that is the biggest concern. today governor newsom outlined what the state is doing to address the problem. >> we are actually looking overseas, interestingly, to potentially recruit some staffing. >> he says the state has already added 80 additional paramedics and emts, 50 national guard members and asked the department of defense to provide an additional 200 healthcare workers. the state is also making changes to get quarantined nurses and doctors back to work sooner. >> during our critical staffing shortages, we now are up to seven, not a ten-day quarantine for health care workers and emergency response workers and social service workers that have been exposed and as long as they test negative on day five or later. >> reporter: in the bay area, special centers are preparing to handle patients who were not acutely ill including here at the craneway pavilion in richmond wh

let's take that and watch that move through the bay area through morning. hat goes through about 2:00 in the afternoon before the first showers clear the south bay. as the first line clears in the early afternoon, another organized line of showers moves in for late afternoon on sunday. the take away from this is sunday is the more noticeably rainy day. you will notice it because it is coming through the heart of the day. the first system tonight happens while we are sleeping. if we put the totals, we have picked up about a half inch of rain on the higher end of the forecast. this is total for both days. maybe a half inch for the north bay, we can see close to that really anywhere in the bay area. sonoma should see higher rainfall totals and that tells us the high end. a half inch of rain. it's not a soaking storm. we will hopefully see better storms throughout the course of the winter but this will be a good start for what's been a long absence. we haven't gotten widespread rain since the middle of november. snow in the sierra is a good news story. we'll pic
