nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us now with what that all means for us in the bay area. >> reporter: you don't have to wear a mask if you are fully vaccinated but you might want to. right now 83% of u.s. cases are of the delta variant. a big spike from 50% of all cases the week of july 3rd. in california nearly half of all new cases are now of the delta variant, which experts say is highly contagious. for that reason, 17 california counties are now recommending that even fully vaccinated people wear masks when we are inside public places. that far includes all bay area counties except for solano. right now only los angeles county is mandating a return to masks indoors. the bay area would be solidly in the red and most restrictive purple tiers based on new case numbers and hospitalizations. the cdc continues to urge people to get vaccinated as all of the authorized vaccines do provide protection against the delta variant and because most covid cases are among people who are unvaccinated. >> right now concerns are growing about breakthrough cases of covid-19. an aid to house speaker n

"today in the bay" cierra johnson with more on the plot authorities uncovered. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. in the now-unsealed documents, federal prosecutors say the two men began hatching the plan shortly after the 2020 election. they had a plan to fire bomb that democratic headquarters there in the state's capital. those two men, 45-year-old ian rogers of napa and 37-year-old jared copeland of have vallejo behind the plan. the plan was to fire bomb the headquarters was the hope that explosion would be the beginning of some type of a movement. prosecutors say the pair used multiple messaging platforms to discuss the plan and at one point copeland messaged rogers saying he contacted an anti-government militia group to gather support. for some lawmakers this plan signals a greater issue. >> these are symptoms of a larger issue, and that is our society and this separatism. even now i thank the fbi for their work, but in this day and age, you know, we should not be conc

let's take you into our bay area weather and we do want to transition things into the heat that's coming's that area of high pressure is really cranking up the heat today. that's just going to continue through tomorrow. so we're going to start it off mostly sunny for the morning and temperatures in the 60s. but we're on a fast climb for the temperatures, especially through the inland east bay. 102 in concord. 103 in livermore. you see the trend as you get closer to the bay and the coast. a little ocean breeze and that will keep it 79 in oakland and 66 in half moon bay. the one spot you got to watch out for is brentwood. 112 on saturday. that's the hottest day. more manageable next week with 90s in that city. and across san francisco, 70s next couple of days and 60s, they return next week. through the inland valleys, we have friday, saturday, and sunday that will be in the triple digits. then we drop it off next week. raj, saturday, that's the day when it's going to be super uncomfortable, especially across inland contra costa, alameda counties. >>> it's been a busy evening. tonight at 11

within about a 40-minute drive around the bay area. half moon bay you kind of needed a jacket at times. some of the cooling did reach san francisco. there is a beautiful view, the bay bridge in the distance where we've got a sea breeze cooled. 54 degrees. but that is not carrying too far inland right now. as you see, patchy low clouds closer to san francisco. san jose kind of the comfortable middle ground today as we saw temperatures mostly in the mid-80s. mid- to upper 80s tomorrow. but the exceptions to the rule obviously in terms of the sea breeze aoling. it's been out towards the tri-valley. it's only cooled down to 78 degrees after a high of 106 degrees today in livermore. tomorrow it will be probably just a little bit cooler. but we're still expecting highs near 102 around livermore tomorrow. so here is a look at the breeze. this is important. fairfield has got a southwest wind at 23 miles per hour. if you have friends and family in the sacramento area, they look for that. the delta breeze through solano county, starting to see a

. >> reporter: in pleasanton, melissa colorado, "nbc bay area news". >> we are hoping for that, too. thank you, melissa. >>> new water restrictions in the south bay after the city of santa clara declares a local drought emergency. effective immediately the following are banned in the city of santa clara. wasting water including run-off on sidewalks and streets. washing paved areas and washing cars with a house without an automatic shut-off valve. you can't water your lawn during and after rain, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and more than three days a week. restaurants are also pro hinted from giving customers water unless they ask for it. these rules mirror many in place for santa clara county and the state. santa clara city council is expected to approve the emergency drought declaration tomorrow making these restrictions mandatory. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. we know the drought is bad and it is going to get worse, especially after the four-day heat wave? >> right now with the drought monitor showing 33% 32% of california is under the exceptional drought. we've

northern california, even including parts of the bay area. so let's show you what's drive thing heat. it's all about this hot area of high pressure down to the south. clockwise circulation around it, taking that desert air and pulling it across the state. here's the thing to remember, we still see that cool, foggy breeze at the coastline. again, we'll get into some isolated heat here, 105 to 110 degrees. we'll show you more on that in just a bit. we still have that fog to deal with. look at the time up here. once we hit 10:30 in the morning, we should clear out for most of us, except for the beaches still hanging on to a little bit there. so with the heat beginning to get closer, the morning temperatures will start off on the warmer side. 64 in the tri valley. with the fog in san francisco, that will be the coolest spot. daytime highs tomorrow on a solid warmup of 10 to 20 degrees. once you get away from the ocean breeze, definitely going to feel it. cop cord, 98. morgan hill, 95. up to the north bay, upper 80s and low 90s. san francisco and

nbc bay area news. >>> caltrans says 6 of the #9 bay area counties have seen traffic return to or exceed what it was before covid-19. the three are still seeing less traffic than before. might surprise you. san mateo, san francisco, and santa clara counties. >> we continue our coverage of the dixie fire which is just tearing through plumas and butte counties north of us, grew nearly 10,000 acres overnight. the northeastern perimeter has merged with a smaller fire which charred rubble and blackened trees. all that's left. it's terrible. the bla heavy smoke have led to evacuation orders in several communities along the west shore of lake alminore. so far the dixie fire has charred nearly 200,000 acres and at this point just 21% contained. >>> right now we're watching the smoke from the dixie fire impacting much of northeastern california as the threat of lightning spark fires perhaps closer to the bay area over the next days increases. as the monsoon moisture arrives we'll have a closer look at the impact hour by hour when we come right back. >> thank you, rob. >>> despite disappearing mor

in san jose, nbc bay area news. >>> well, some cities in the bay areworks. let's show you a map of where safe and sanearea. in the north bay, you have got cloverdale, roener park, dixon, and sassoon city. gilroy, in the south bay. and over in san mateo county, you have san bruno and pacifica. in san bruno safe and sane firework stands are closed for the night. but today, vendors were selling out. they say they expect to completely sell out by tomorrow. partly because of supply chain issues. customers say they are taking extra precautions this year. >> we make sure all the cars are moved. we have buckets of water around. make sure if we are doing it, it's on a -- on a pavement that's pretty much clear of all debris, brush, and everything. >> we talk about safe and sane fireworks. let' define them. they are the type that do not leave the ground, and go into the air. well, tonight, we are learning more about that massive-fireworks explosion down in los angeles. federal agents say they have arrested a man for bringing 32,000 p nevada. police had been saying it w

it's just our highest peaks that is included in that for bay area coastline. an east bay shoreline. thank the marine layer for not having that fire danger threat. that's been helping to prevent any heat waves and fire danger concerns in our areas. fortunately temperatures out there. right now, though, mid 50's along the san francisco peninsula coastline. but check out antioch still flirting with 80's. so very warm air mass is in place were conquer livermore in antioch, widespread low to mid and upper 70's. there. everyone else in the bay area in the 50's and 60's with overnight lows tonight, antioch. no surprise only cooling down to 62 degrees. everyone else, though, in the mid to even low 50's and daytime highs tomorrow. very similar to today's daytime highs. but add that moisture and humidity content. it's going to feel warmer on account of that relative humidity. so conquered in livermore in the low 90's mid 80's for those of you novato and san jose seasonal temperatures along the coast low to mid 60's and low to mid 70's for the east bay shoreline. so we are tracking the very uns

the bay area. we're looking at another hot one today with daytime highs climbing. >> well into the mid 90's for some of our inland cities. so something to think about as you're venturing outside and it's not just the heat either but also a chance of dry thunderstorms early this afternoon that is upping fire danger enough across the bay area that we have a series of red flag warnings in effect across upper elevations for much of the bay as we kick off this forecast after today things do cool off, though. and that's the plus side of all this looking outside at your center tower cam right now. you can see a mix of low clouds, but hey, this is good visibility considering you haven't even been able to see your center tower view and well over a week. so this is actually a bit of an improvement in that regard. some low cloud cover having pushed across the bay area. but if we zoom out across the region. what you are seeing is thunderstorm activity remaining pretty isolated as of this point to area southeas

we are seeing this covering a large part of the west and we are seeing it, of course, here in the bay area. we do have to keep that in mind. as we get a look at our temperatures today, we will head into the upper 70s for the south bay. even though it is cloudy now, we will get that clearing we normally see by late morning. you can see the clouds rolling by the tri-valley. we are headed up to 70, 80 degrees there. we will see some mid 70s in the peninsula. today's high temperatures in the east bay reaching into the mid 80s while san francisco will be in the mid 60s and the north bay around 80 degrees. >>> mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> it is a smooth, easy drive. we expect this on a friday. not a lot of volume of traffic in the south bay. in fact, we are showing that just a little bit, about 10 or 15 minutes of slowing where it barely got below the speed limb you i.t. for 101 up to oakland road. later on today, right about 7:30, 8:00, we will see how 87 starts to slow quite a bit and same thing for north 101. a later start through the silicon valley. you will have an abbreviate

but it looks like most of it falls apart before getting to the bay area. then it lifts up with the smoke. so by monday afternoon, through tuesday morning we get about a 25% chance of showers for the bay area. but sprinkle or two is not impossible as we go through all of this. a lightning strike or two is not impossible as well. so partly cloudy and breezy tonight. a light thunderstorm chance by tomorrow afternoon. more smoke through tuesday and then it will be clearing out by wednesday. forecast highs look like this, pacifica, 61, san mateo, 79. so a nice, pleasant, mild monday. for the north bay, 77 for santa rosa, 79 for novato and 78 for canfield. if you want warm, had to ukiah and clearlake. it looks like things will be fairly typical this week. temperatures don't take any wild swings. mostly in the 60s and 70s along the coast, 80s inland. in the extended forecast, going with more of the same. inland in the 90s in some spots as we warm-up. as we get into the area around the bay, it is warm but it will be cool by the coastline. so we expect things to be

we're under a microclimate weather alert tracking the possibility of dry lightning in parts of the bay area. in the east bay, one of the areas that could see lightning strikes, the diablo range from wanut creek in dublin. >> probably around this time tomorrow, terry, we're watching the storms around east of san diego, the moisture will move into the bay tomorrow. increasing shower chances. mid-level moisture, increasing instability, that could be the fuel for some thunderstorms which may produce lightning strikes without a lot of rain. in our bay area hills, you see outlined in red, these red flag warnings starting at 5:00 tomorrow evening for dry conditions enhanced by drought. you can see statewide, nearly record breaking dry for parts of the sierra and north bay. that's at ground level. above that you'll see high based thundershowers coming in which could lead to lightning sparked fires especially for areas around the inland east bay and santa cruz mountains south starting early tomorrow morning. we'll have a closer look at the timeline hour by hour for tomorrow and when cooler temperatu

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from livermore this morning. why are we being asked to conserve power today, bob? >> well, it's not because of the heat today, laura and marcus. this is because of a wildfire that is burning in oregon that is stressing california's ability to deliver power through powerlines. this fire in oregon is burning in the southern part of that state is called the bootleg fire. the fire itself has compromised transmission lines that are crucial to our powerlines here in the golden state. that is why the cal iso has declared a flex alert for later today. the iso is asking you conserve energy between 4:00 this afternoon and 9:00 tonight. what they want you to do is set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher if your health permits. again, this is not a super hot day so that shouldn't be an issue, hopefully. they also want you to avoid using major appliances like your washing machine or dishwasher, and turn off all unnecessary lights. there are several wildfires burning throughout our state, the golden state. there is one bur
