want to bring in nbc bay area's kris sanchez. >> some bay area schools already ordering their teachers and staff to get their shots. >> not everybody might be it favor, but it sure would simplify things up and down the state if the governor did make that mandate. we know that already our biggest bay area districts have gone forward with that mandatory vaccination proof even before the governor started talking about it. it goes for teachers, students, staff, and of course volunteers if you're allowed on campus, which you likely will not be. so, the latest and second largest is oakland unified, which will require proof of vaccination by august 27th. students returned to classrooms on monday. san francisco unified is requiring proof by september 7th. their students return to campus next week. and as we have reported, san jose unified got priority for their teachers in march. and then they started mandating proof about two weeks ago. now more than 90% of staff is fully vaccinated. anyone who does not provide that proof of vaccination, because you can't force people to get vaccinated, but y

reporting live in fremont, sharon katsuda, nbc bay area news. >>> the bay area's largest school district, san francisco unified, reopened today. more than 50,000 students walked back into campus classrooms. many of them for the first time in more than a year. the kids showed up to applause at dr. george washington carver elementary, and teachers welcomed some students with balloons. masks are mandatory, testing mandatory for staff. oakland reported 58 cases among students and staff after one week of classes. >> we're talking to each other about what's going on. and one of the things we know is that there are going to be some cases. our goal is to make sure there isn't transmission. >> all district employees have until september 7 to get vaccinated and students must wear their masks at all times. >>> now there's a new wave of covid hitting the state's prisons, including san quentin. the new cases come as the state refuses to order prison staff to get vaccinated. >> reporter: san quentin prison was at the heart of a major covid outbreak last year. 2,000 cases and 29 deaths fueled mostly by

across the bay area, that sun just starting to come up and see beautiful sites across the bay area but we're expecting the smoke and haze to blanket the area this weekend. >> bob redell is standing by live in the east bay, but let's get right to the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. it's going to be hot and smoky. >> yes. it's all because of the fires we had burning not far from the bay area, especially in the sierra. we've been watching the caldor fire and new spot fires that have been developing not far from there. looking at this area that's burned shaded in red, over 139,000 acres burned. we know that highway 50 is closed and we're seeing new evacuations along that area as it continues to progress to the east. how far is this from the tahoe basinen. it's moving closer and some of the estimates are showing it's about ten miles from the lake tahoe area. we, of course, want to make sure that it stays away interest there and gets more containment hopefully but all of the smoke is moving in and starting out with good air quality now, but air quality will be worse as we go into toda

so about a three to six degree warmup across the bay area. that's going to put us into the 80s. 82 in san jose. you're going from the low to mid-70s in the north bay back up to 87 in napa. 86 in santa rosa. we still keep those cool 60s right here at the coastline. tomorrow air quality moderate as we mentioned. but let's get into the smoke forecast. you'll see through the afternoon we have haze with us tomorrow, but then watch off to the north as we head into friday's forecast for that weather pattern change. can you see the smoke starting to move back in. that red color is the unhealthy smoke. on friday we expect to return over the north base, east bay and right there for the south bay. it's just the reality of the situation. until these fires get much more containment, it's going to be a week by week, day by day situation on that smoke front. so on my forecast in san francisco, 70s returning friday, saturday and sunday. a little warmer in downtown san francisco. and for the inland valleys, a short span of this heat. there we go, back to some

in addition to most of the bay area, and linda way for the bay we are talking about unhealthy for sensitive groups, air quailty levels with orange dots for the north bay. jumbled together in the santa clara valley. healthy for sensitive groups around san jose, flat-out unhealthy for most inland parts of east bay. some of the worst air quailty in the tri-valley right now. the only good news is that there is moderate, not even good air quailty readings, right around the bay and on the coast. the good news is it is hard to come by. we will see slow improvement as we head to the next few days. i think the worst air quailty e smoke the toouthe unhealthin fot the bay area saturday. limit yo outside and don't overexert yourself. a slight improvement with air quailty levels moderate on the board. the onshore breeze kicks in and not just grab a smoke but further up in the atmosphere further off to the east and northeast. that is good news for the bay area. it is bad news for tahoe. it means the smoke from the caldor fire will be blown directly at them once again. we come back and take a look at the

i'm tahernia the bay area.ir quality management district is extending an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through tomorrow. the smoke isn't being considered unhealthy for us here, but it is something we are monitoring closely. so let's turn things over to our experts. kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow learns. how are the winds behaving this afternoon. yes. and as we get more of a westerly wind right down to the surface. and that's really helping us out. but. >> you get above about 500 feet or so higher than that. if you live in the oakland hills, you're feeling that smoke in your smell in a 2. and even the north. they are seeing some of them. but the haze is out there all around. you can notice right away when you got up this morning and look at your sky would just that awkward gray shade of color, not the true blue that we're used to. and so yeah, that's what we're seeing out there right now. good air quality even with the haze out there most that again is above the service. so we're looki

in the morning and those northerly wind and mid-level transporting that smoke across much of the bay area but especially in the north bay and inland in the east bay and some of it will sneak down across the bay area including santa clara valley and the good news is it looks like that should get pushed off to the east and northeast by saturday morning but another plume of smoke could be making its way down toward us for the second half of the weekend. at this point what i anticipate is inland in the east bay in north bay will dip into the unhealthy for sensitive groups category and tomorrow and again on saturday with the rest of the bay area in the moderate category but then things will approve and improve rapidly and sunday we should see moderate to good air quality and good across the board on monday as the onshore breeze will strengthen and scrub the atmosphere clean of the smoke that will try to move in over the next few days so we will keep a close eye on that but looking outside it is not smoke but fog and it was stubborn throughout the day but it cleared out long enough for temperat

. >>> the bay area waking to another day of high fire danger as we look live over the east bay hills in lafayette. it'll be smoky out there. let's get over to mary lee. taking a look at the latest conditions. >> we are looking at critical fire weather conditions for today. that red flag warning could get extended in to tomorrow. i'm tracking a second burst into tonight and tomorrow. gusts this morning up in the higher elevations up to 40 to 55 miles an hour up in the mountains. that's why that red flag warning is in effect for today. again could get extended. we are looking at the north bay mountains, east bay hills under that red flag warning. the areas highlighted in red. relative humidity down to ten to 15%. very dry air with those record dry fuel vegetation and brush and with that a big concern. with the northerly winds it'll transport and push a lot of smoke into the region. widespread smoke expected. we are looking at temperatures seasonal for this time of year. >>> thousands of people here in the bay area are waking up in the dark this morning. pg&e shut off their power becaus

but here's the very latest air quality from some of our sensors around the bay area. looking good in a san francisco through much of the north bay parts of the south bay to nagin the san jose you get moderate amounts of clues. building up and then it gets very poor as you make your way into conquered martinez in the san ramon. i'm looks like poor air quality. also into livermore valley as well as you head inland that tends to be the case is we're getting a sea breeze outside that sea breeze is what's actually keeping us from getting all the very smoky conditions all the way to the surface outside right now. what a contrast down below you've got the fog and the low clouds coming on shore up above. that's not a cloud deck. that's all that smoke from the fires of the sun sets here in the bay area. so we're going to see that more throughout the weekend to. but i think as we head towards sunday think a little bit of a break. all that smoke coming down from the fires and so looks like the sea breeze is what's been helping out so far that sea breeze will continue overnight to

the bay area looking a little better. what helps to clear out the bay area is the sea breeze.s with wind could saws some big problems. that's to do with the fires that are ongoing and the fires still going in northwest california. you apply more wind to the fires, the activity ramps up and they usually produce a lot more smoke. for now that smoke will head off to the east to places like lake tahoe, but the increase in wind as of 2:00 tomorrow and tomorrow night including lake tahoe. dry conditions and droughts parch wildfire fields. then by wednesday, upper 80s to low 80s, and we'll hold that probably until friday. you can see the next time we go on the roller coaster ride of warmer temperatures by the end of next weekend, the beginning of the following week that appears to be a trend that holds up in the tri-valley into the north bay, even to bayside locations like oakland could see those temperatures climbing back up. as we look at this both in terms of cooler temperatures and the potential for smoke to try to make a bit of a comeback, it might be late next weekend. you see

i've shown it a couple of times tonight but this really illustrates what a lot of us in the bay area are dealing with, especially in the north bay and the east bay where that smoke is the worst. the visibility really reduced. when it comes to the air quality unhealthy here in the north bay. also the east bay and the south bay. let's give you a closer look at the smoke forecast. tonight there's no change. you can see all the orange and red on this map. that is the smoke. through tomorrow morning there's really no big changes as it stays put. even through tomorrow night. but once we head into saturday look how that smoke starts to move off toward the east. i think we'll be left with some hazy skies on saturday but a lot of the unhealthy sploek should start to kick on out toward the east. now, the other thing we're frac tracking of course is all these fires across california. not only the dixie fire but the antelope fire. monument fire. and caldor fire now 65,000-plus acres. so all that smoke, again, coming down here toward the bay area. so what we really need is some rainfall. we'll tak
