nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live outside the south bay emergency operations center for pg&e. how is it looking out there, damian? >> opportunities may be rempted to others. >> reporter: this team is tasked with tracking and responding to power outages in the south bay. on days like this, no power can be a life-threatening situation. there were 38 outages by noon. and after days of unrelenting heat, pg&e expects those numbers to climb by tonight. >> we have people at the ready to go out there to respond. if our equipment overheats, if it fails, we have folks that are ready to go out there and get the power going as soon as we can. >> reporter: crews are being brought into the bay area from all over, including the central valley. pg&e says the transformers in that region are built for continuous days of excessive heat, unlike the transformers here. so areas like press know don't see as many transformer blowouts as cities that are closer to the coast, even though they tend to have more hot days. what do you think about all this heat? >> unbearable. >> reporter: fred carpenter an

there have been power outages cross bay area since monday. and now the power grid is so stressed that planned outages could have affected some homes in parts of the peninsula. the east bay and the south bay kron four's dan kerman has been in touch with pg and e he is live in san francisco tonight with the latest on the agency's plans. stand. >> that's right. we've been monitoring the grid here, the cali so great. as you mentioned, they've moved to stage 3. that means that it's very likely there will be rotating outages. then at this point, they still have not been called for still pacific gas and electric have informed about 10% of their customers that they could be impacted by these planned outages. >> the demand for power on the california grid is expected to be at an all-time high. and we've entered what is going to be the most challenging days so far of this unprecedented heat wave. >> during an online update tuesday afternoon, california's electrical grid operator warned rotating outages are a real possibility tuesday evening unless custo

we're tracking actual storm clouds making its way into the bay area. getting thicker, especially along the coast. for those of you in the north bay. >> you notice that storm cloud cover earlier in the day and you're already starting to see some light scattered showers moving along the immediate coastline with the bulk of that storm. not expected to arrive until the overnight hours. so it's going to be more uniform in nature overnight, but then it slowly going to start to break apart by your sunday afternoon even into your monday. but let's take a look at the widespread rain that we're expecting light to moderate and even pockets of heavy downpours by sunday morning. and also we're going to notice a very unstable atmosphere so we could actually see some pop-up thunderstorms specifically for those of you in the north bay on sunday. so just keep that in mind. when you hear thunder war go indoors and then look by sunday evening. that storm is going to start to break apart, becoming more scattered in nature. but we're still going to see some pockets of cell

many outages around the bay area, particularly in the south bay, area's are highlighted in red, orange, yellow and green. red is the most intense. that means more than 5,000 customers without power. and you can see here this is the area around the intersection of highway 101, and tully road in east san jose. a number of neighborhoods there without power. and if we had a little bit south of that, you go down highway one on one tour, morgan hill, you'll see there's a wide area around morgan hill and san martine on both sides of highway 101, big neighborhoods without power. not as densely packed a san jose. so not as many customers affected but a broad swath of morgan hill and san martine without power right now. well, yesterday's extreme heat put a record-breaking strain on the state's energy grid. it prompted an energy emergency alert 3 by cal iso. but a breakdown in communication is led to some finger pointing for power outages in some bay area cities. >> kron four's haaziq madyun has that part of our coverage. to be clear. >> this was a request to arm load to get ready. but we were no

it is a first alert weather day around the bay area, and this is just the start. we begin with chief meteorologist, paul heggen, who is tracking those conditions. >> >> temperatures will be excessively hot in the bay area area beginning on saturday. that that will be continuing to the rest of the holiday weekend, even through the beginning of next workweek. excessive heat warning goes into effect on saturday for all inland parts of of the bay area. this is where the heat is going to be the greatest. this is well are where where temperatures will top out over 100 degrees, some spots approaching 110 degrees. around the bay, the excessive heat watch has been upgraded to a heat advisory, it is one category lower than excessive heat warning. 90s on the penins, the peninsula, down th d of the bay as well. limit your time outside, make sure you you stay hydrated. spots not included in these advisories and and warnings, san francisco, and and the immediate shoreline. we won't completely lose that onshore influence. but the heat risk goes from moderate for most most of the

we're even starting out warm across the bay area.ally this is our time to let the house cool down and then get ready for that high heat for the afternoon. we're starting out in 0s and 70s this morning. even 85 in martinez now. notice the orange colors if you live in the hills and upper elevations. temperatures this morning in the night and even close to 1 -- in the 90s and even close to 100. this is at 6:00 in the morning. here's where we're headed today -- it's going to be possibly the hottest temperatures we've ever measured in a lot of spots. it's the peak of the heat with san jose reaching 106 degrees. it could be as hot as 118 in concord today. oakland reaching 102. and as we look at the peninsula, 81 in half moon bay and 108 in palo alto. daly city, 87. night in san francisco, and our north bay highs reaching as hot as 115 in clear lake. now let's turn to "today in the bay"'s bob redell who's tracking some power outages for east bay residents. bob, that is so tough. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. the power's been out here in

john ramos has the story. >> reporter: last week when it was 110 degrees in the bay area, area, a shadys a welcome welcome sight, but at one point it got so hot that it created a different kind of storm for wildlife care hospitals. that is is when it started raining squirrels. things have cooled off a bit, so the local wildlife wildlife has a chance to chill . chill out. >> reporter: last week at the wildlife center of silicon valley, things started getting a a little crazy. >> this past monday, we had 14 squirrels coming in, and people were lined up outside the gate to get in when we opened. >> when that happened, you realized we were in for something? >> it's a tidal wave. yeah. >> reporter: this is what feeding time looks like, now. the center is inundated with the the juvenile squirrels, all found lying under trees by the public. the staff believes the babies were trying to get comfortable in triple digit heat heat and fell out of their nests. >> we have, actually, about 203 in care. we had 34 come in over the weekend. >> reporter: the same thing is happening at wildlife hospitals a

it has been good to moderate around the bay area. bad in the late tahoe area because of the mosquito fire. this is where we see the thickest smoke from the fire. in the bay area, hazy conditions. the sea breeze will kick in starting tomorrow that is when we will see cooler, cleaner air and the cooldown continues with us till wednesday. up in the sierra is where the smoke will drift and push out east and be bad there for a while. highs today will be close to yesterday's numbers. oakland, 79, san jose, 85 degrees. temperatures coming into the upper 80's and we might hit 92 in ukiah. the sea breeze will seek -- keep things cool at the beaches. it 60's to upper 60's at the coast. tonight, fog moves in spreading into the east bay. temperatures on the cool side. more 50's overnight and low 60's. san francisco, 57. tomorrow, a little cooler. it cooler into tuesday and even wednesday. that looks like the coolest day of the week. you can see that with the seven-day forecast. you made, hazy peer temperatures may be a little warmer in some spot

that blazing heat now starting to move into parts of the bay area inside the bay. not so much pretty comfortable. 70's names yet 19 hot in san jose and along the coastline. huge contrast in temperatures got the patchy fog there and numbers in the 60's. all right. so here's how things work out now. the excessive heat watches been downgraded now by the national weather service. we're getting just enough of the sea breeze to keep you cool along the water's edge. you get inside the bay. that's changes in a hurry. heat advisories posted now for places like fremont hayward, oakland, milpitas starting on saturday. that's continuing until tuesday. and the warnings have been posted further inland. you can see all the areas shaded in peak up to the santa cruz mountains into the santa clara valley, the east bay alameda contra costa solano, napa and sonoma counties. yeah, you're going to be out of the heat as we head in toward these next few. these temperatures are going to soar all around, in fact, likely going to see as high as 100 a day, maybe even more along the coastline.

back in the bay area, a small fire between martinez and crockett. ighway four. if you live in this area you're wondering where all of the smoke is coming from. there are some evacuations. we will monitor this fire throughout the evening. jeff is back with us. think oh gosh, we are over it but we are not. tomorrow we will get back to it. >> it is a multi-day event. i wanted you to get a look at the fire and the conditions. we will take you to that forecast right now. what you are going to see, as you zoom in and give you a closer look it is the way the wind is blowing. it is coming out of the west at 11. we could see gus up to about 15. it is a hot 104. very low humidity with 50%. fires and state road four. a lot of that smoke is going right toward martinez. officials are reporting this as a vegetation fire. thankfully there is not super tall thick brush and trees. hopefully they will be able to get this under control. they have had some airdropped on it. a lot of that harmful smoke going toward martinez. were updates on that at nbcbayarea.com. >>> a
