in 2004, the san francisco federation did a study that was just a subset of the entire bay area. in 2011, the east bay federation did a study that was just on the east they area. it has been quite a few years and this is precedent-setting because it is the entire area. >> so we have really taken a holistic approach, the entire bay area jewish community? >> yes. >> so when we think about who jews are, not everyone will know this but one thing we ask ourselves is who is a trance 26 -- jew? what are some of the ways this was understood? >> we use the broadest definition on who is jewish. basically, if you consider yourself jewish or partially jewish in any way, by religion, or anything. you are in, as part of the screening, that is jewish. not a narrow definition of jewish at all, in fact, the broadest definition possible. we consider the bay area jewish population people who live with jews, we have 50,000 jewish people in the bay area, based on our findings and 473,000 total people in jewish households. >> fascinating. we will take it a quick break in just a moment but before we go,

notice most of the bay area is in the mid 60s from san jose southward. similar trend up in the north bay. if you have a day to get outside and enjoy the weather, it is by far going to be thursday. we may even see some 70s south of morgan hill. santa cruz. 66 degrees. 68 san jose. bay side temperatures into the 60s. so the spring like temperatures tease a little bit of a warmup the second half of the week but the numbers start cooling down. a reminder it is still february outside. you'll see the cooler changes by the time we get to friday. may involve a slight chance of showers right there late friday into saturday. right now it doesn't look like as much rain as we had last weekend but you can see here saturday a better chance of showers saturday, sunday, and monday we may dry out. this is an interesting pattern as we head to the beginning of next week. cold storms dropping down the coast may not bring a lot of rain around the bay area but could bring some relatively low snow levels around the sierra early next week. so right now looks like the best window

we could see snow into the santa cruz mountains and in the inland bay area. snow totals are showing about seven inches near boulder creek. snow in the bay, that is crazy , in general. we will take what we can get. about one inch near mount diablo. more impressive numbers in the north bay. i will break this down coming up. overall, we have a lot more where this came from. >>> the winds were really howling last night. as you wake up and head out the door this morning a couple things to look for. debris in the roadway, tree branches down. heads up as you travel through in some areas. i saw a lot of that in my trip in. power outages in effect for areas along the peninsula and in the south bay. traffic signals may be out and traffic lights. treat it as a four-way stop, as you travel through. the extra careful as you commute. let's get a live look at the bay bridge. how will the commute be this morning? it was tough yesterday with the tree in the roadway. that has been cleared. right now at the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on and it is getting busy as y

well the bay area's biggest mountain. em got a fair share of snow in the east bay, streams of people drove to mont diablo state park , hoping to see the winter wonderland atop 3800 plus feet of elevation, and there she is, one mother says she and her 14 year old son drove for an hour and a half out of alameda, only to be turned away at the gate, park officials say, six inches to a foot of snow made the park a special sight to see. but the frosty weather also closed roads because of hazardous driving conditions. we're drilling with drought stricken trees that are just getting dumped on by heavy snow that aren't used to holding up that kind of weight, so that could fall on a car if they're driving through the road, so we need to make sure that we're assessing. you know those kind of hazards before we open it up to the public. officials say the park will reopen sometime over the weekend if the weather permits, meanwhile, as surreal scene in the san bernardino mountains down in southern california, we want to show you this vid

nbc bay area's pete suratos is in the north bay. folks living there are getting ready. >> first we check in with meteorologist kari hall. winds are picking up. >> this is a camera in san rafael shaking a little bit. we can see the westerly wind at 22 miles per hour. but this is out ahead of the cold front and it still feels pretty mild out there with temperatures in the low 60s. but as the wind continues to increase as we go into the rest of the day, temperatures will be dropping each en in the middle of the afternoon. so here we are at 2:00 and 3:00, when we see those temperatures starting to go down as that cold front is starting to move in. so at 1:00, the wind advisory goes into effect. this continues up until tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. and it's for all of the bay area. our gusts could reach 40 to 60-plus miles per hour and some of those highest wind gusts will be near the coast as well as the hills. but all of the bay area will have some high wind gusts. you have a little bit of time to prepare, but it's go

. >> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> hello, this is a first alert weather day. temperatures falling as the bay prepares for a rare round of snow. the flakes have already started flying in the santa cruz mountains. take a look. this was the scene along highway 17 and the redwood estates area. these are more like snow showers, but it was a taste of what we could be seeing on bay area hillsides in the coming days. let's get our chief meteorologist paul heggen with our first alert forecast. it sure was beautiful to look at! >> the first wave of snow is going to melt when it hits the roads even once the more substantial moisture heads our way. fortunately the winds are calming down. will get past that first alert day but now looking ahead to the next one, the next system bringing widespread rain and snow to the higher elevations. let's talk about the winds first. they are still certainly noticeable. it is a breezy evening across the bay area but the winds are in the 10 to 15 to 20-mile-per- hour range. we can handle that. the winds will continue to diminish as we head

nbc bay area's marianne favro spoke with a bay area man who worked in carter's administration and calls him a friend. >> reporter: after his term in office, president carter made several trips here to the bay area, including here in menlo park, where hundreds lined up for his book signing. but he's most well known for rolling up his sleeves and helping build affordable housing in oakland with habitat for humanity. even in his late 80s, former president jimmy carter worked tirelessly to give back. seen here in 2013, he operated a circular saw as he helped build affordable housing in oakland for habitat for humanity, where he's been a volunteer for more than 35 years. rob of san mateo worked on mr. carter's presidential campaign and in the epa in his administration. he considers the former president a friend, and he admires not just the difference he made while in the oval office but also after. >> what he did since then is, in a lot of ways, more important. his work on human rights, his work on election reform, his work on the environment in africa. >> reporter: tonight with news of mr.

we see drier air coming into the bay area.during the next 24 hours, main estimates for sunday, the blue and green you see here is generally about 0.5 inches of rain to 0.25 inches of rain for the mountains. san jose is not expecting much in the way of rain at all. i milder storm, you don't want to see this if you are a fan of low snow, some of that snow might melt because sunday's rain and air temperatures are a little bit warmer. we don't have much in terms of white across the mountains, so a more typical weather system with the rain passing through quickly on sunday. then the wind will pick up nick midday. 15 to 30 miles per hour, gusty through early afternoon, then the wind speed coming down sunday evening. monday things get interesting. a stronger storm, and the color coding back into the low snow range, santa cruz mountains, perhaps some of the hills in the east bay, north bay northern sonoma county into monday night. that is the window monday through early wednesday. temperatures are now cold enough to get the snow back

here's a live look at the power outages across the bay area caused by all of that. when you can see on the map, there are a lot of people on the peninsula in the city, but particularly the orange area that. >> 500 to 5,000 customers still don't have power they are out mostly in the palo alto area on this map. some people in south san francisco are still without power because of a power pole that came down. it got snap. strong winds uprooted a tree and smashed onto the roof of the home. you can see here this happened cut off power to more than 100 pg e customers. the the vice president of that utility described the challenge in trying to get the power restored. >> so we'll have to come in and upset an entirely new poll. i'm pretty hard to get back in here with a truck. so we may be handing that poll. those polls will be anywhere from depending on how they spec 8 to 10 feet down in the ground. so we got a lot of work to do here to get that restored. >> meanwhile, the house it was hit by the tree has been red tagged, meaning it's not safe to be inside. the good news is

you're watching nbc bay area news tonight. >>> welcome back to nbc bay area news tonight. the city is swimming in office space. san francisco has one of the highest commercial vacancy rates of any big city in america. so why not turn some of those offices that people aren't using into homes? that's the suggestion of san francisco supervisor ahsha safai. right now about 30% of the city's office buildings are vacant. 30%. as more commercial leases expire this year, tech and financial firms are reevaluating how much office space they need. a lot of people continue to work from home. the supervisor says converting those offices into homes could help attract people back to downtown and help san francisco with another problem. >> we have a housing crisis. we have a housing shortage. so how can we create in a much more expedited way housing? >> safai setting up a hearing. it's not a simple thing. it's not going to work for all the properties. some don't have adequate plumbing or enough windows to turn into living spaces. the mayor's office has commissioned now a study to see how

how people in the bay area are trying to help and you can lend a hand. >>> sticker shock on the utilityill like pg&e, how it could lead to a federal investigation. >>> in the south bay, police investigating a mass overdose in santa clara county. what we know so far. >>> tonight countries around the world are sending help and rescue teams to the middle east, searching through the rubble for any survivor after that massive 7.8 earthquake hit monday morning. >> it's tuesday morning now in turkey. the numbers are changing by the hour. the president of turkey says it's his country's biggest disaster since 1939. more than 3,700 people have died in turkey and syria, but the death toll is expected to rise dramatically. more than 6,000 buildings in turkey alone have collapsed. so many shocking videos of the buildings coming crashing to its ground. people are still being pulled alive from the rubble more than 24 hours after the initial quake hit. crews have searching through the mounds of concrete and metal for survivors. it's full of older buildings and concrete not designed for this much shake.

this looks not like something we normally see in the bay area. temperatures are pretty cold and flurries are kind of falling a little bit. we know that there are logistical reasons for people who are on the roadway, meaning you are in this area, roads are slick, little slushy, i do not recommend driving. if you're not used to driving in these conditions, there is a highway closure and on highway 29, a long wind he rode into napa valley. if that is going up in elevation, of course it means it'll also be tough road conditions as well. a pretty astonishing seen here knowing a lot of snow in the bay area. nothing we have not seen anymore -- seen before. take it easy if you are driving and really look at it, it is incredible. back to you. kumasi: thank you, ryan. what just happened? did you get hit by snow? we will come back. we've got all that red around the bay area. mountaintops and yes, some of the higher peaks going to see some snow down to about 1500 feet, maybe in the north bay all the way down to about or so as we've got some very cold temperatures already in place. in fact, look at the numbers right now. 44 degrees in fremont. it is 42 in pacifica. 45 in down to 33 degrees and callisto. you could very well be seeing some snow right now in calistoga where people live. so here's where it is. you can see that big swirl off the coastline and then all those clouds, a cold front just about to make its way on shore sitting right about here. it is going to be pushing south into the bay area as we head through the night tonight. the storm is going to be picking up, going to be some heavy rainfall moving in along with that system comes through and a lot of snow across the higher peaks and then all of a sudden as the front begins to move on through. well, you start to see some colder air moves in behind it. and that's where things really get kind of ma

. >> something we don't see very often, snow covered hilltops, most cities in the bay area, where the matythe population lives. cold rain with the potential for thunderstorms producing small hail. first alert doppler showing more activity than a few hours ago. let's zoom into the north bay where the most widespread rain is falling, snow indicating on the mountain, rain in santa rosa. patchy activity around santa rosa and a dryer break for the city at the moment. much of the east bay is in between showers right now. further down to the south, scattered showers climbing from the santa cruz mountains added to the santa clara valley but there is snow in the santa cruz mountains and also around mt. hamilton but this will be the case through the rest of the night. snowfall levels right now are still around 2000 feet, those will steadily drop as we head into the night and early friday morning. more moisture just off the coast, that will be moving onshore within the next 45 minutes or so and there is more over the pacific will come at us in waves through the enter the early fr morncommute,e e

we have rain heading much of the bay area today. bart is running at slower speeds because of the rain. make sure to add some time to your trip, wherever you are going today. in san jose, the streets were soggy earlier this morning. in this neighborhood very much the same on the freeway. you will see chp out there making sure that we slow down and then this is the scene right outside of our battery street studios. downtown san francisco off to a wet start this morning. the rain is falling steadily. meantime, snow is not letting up in some spots. this is a time lapse for mount diablo. to explain it all, first alert meteorologist darren peck is joining me with bay area conditions. >>> we are in the center of this thing. we are not done with the chance of rain and an isolated thunderstorm until wednesday morning. you can see first alert doppler. just a quick review, i will let the future cast pick up on where things are now. and play it forward and it will go all the way through wednesday morning with isolated scattered showers on here.

area of low pressure. the showers in the central bay right now will back up toward the bay area. you can see the beginnings of that trundled ready on the radar loop. showers moving more or less south and north and they are eventually going to move from east to west. let's switch over to futurecast and track that through the next couple of days. we have lingering showers in the forecast and i put the snow level hovering around 1500 feet to the rest of the overnight hours. it will not last all day tomorrow. more rain further down the line. lingering showers on saturday. we will be drying out toward midday and into the afternoon. the dry break continues saturday night but the next wave of moisture will be knocking on our doorstep as the sun is coming up on sunday and that rain will move through the bay area especially from late morning into the afternoon on sunday. this will be a quick hitting storm system. there will be some brief heavy downpours and small hail. yes, there could be a rm sunday around midday into the afternoon. and other dry break sunday night. that will not last ve

here is a look at the warmest temperatures around the bay area tomorrow. san jose southward into morgan hill. upper 60s and low 70s. may see similar conditions around scotts valley heading towards santa cruz. into the north bay, all of this changes rapidly as early as friday. pretty clear to see why on the time line. by friday afternoon shower chances return. we're going back to more typical february weather. the showers will drop down the coast. the time stamp, midnight into early saturday morning. that will be the main impact for showers on your weekend plans mostly for the first half of saturday and then skies will clear out heading into saturday afternoon and evening. the rain totals have come up a little bit. most of what you're seeing a tenth of an inch of rain or less, not a lot, falling friday night to noon. a reason sunday and monday temperatures will take off again. just look at the roller coaster ride we have with these temperatures up tomorrow, down, back up just in time for sunday in napa. a similar trend for your weekend plans. morgan hill and

our temperatures around the bay area mostly 50s now. areas to watch tomorrow morning inland east bay, central bay may have patchy low clouds and then through the afternoon back to nonstop sunshine. dress in layers tomorrow. the morning is still chilly with 30s and 40s, patchy frost possible to start the day around santa rosa. as early as lunch time, mid-60s. notice santa rosa in the mid-30s. it's quite a change. look at san jose. south of downtown which takes us to the warmest temperatures around the bay area, saratoga, morgan hill very close to 70 degrees. it's not going to stick around. you can see why here on friday. we're back into more typical february weather. a chance of showers returning friday afternoon and shower chances will be ongoing. to start saturday off those showers should start to move to the south once we head into saturday afternoon. rain totals still not a lot, but it's come up a little bit in the last 24 hours, most of this falling late friday until noon. generally about a tenth of an inch of rain. better news for t

if you're hoping to see some bay area snow today, one of the bay area's highest peaks, mt.blo, is reopening to visitors any minute now at 8:00 this morning. after a closure to allow staff to clean snow and trees off the roads, the park roads reopened to visitors yesterday. people in line spent up to two hours in traffic on the mountain waiting to get to the point. some people gave up and opted to walk or bike to get to the snow instead. >> it looked like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we felt the need to check it out. >> the park will reopen at 8:00 this morning. remember to pack warm clothes and snow-ready clothes, as well. as we continue to track the storm impacts on the bay area, the power is still out for thousands of people. here is a look at the latest pg&e outage map. we just got updated numbers a moment ago. 5300 customers are without power. it was 7800 overnight. the south bay is seeing the most outages. more than 3,000 customers in the dark and cold. >>> happening today, a fema mobile disaster recovery center will open for people living in contra costa count

while most of the bay area lives in the areas not shaded, a lot of people living in the hills and mountains as well as in parts of the north bay are going to see snow coming down at times, and there's the potential that mount hamilton could get over a foot of snow, so definitely do not even try to travel up there. it's going to be very treacherous. we don't want to have to make rescues to people that did not need to be there in the first place. we are going to see this tapering off on saturday for a brief break, but another storm coming in on sunday and another one on monday, and then another one on tuesday. this is going to turn quite busy. it may start to quiet down towards the end of next week, but between now and sunday, we could see over an inch of rain for much of the bay area, and in total, over 2 1/2 inches for a lot of the south bay peninsula as well as the east bay. turning back to very busy and active storm pattern here, we could see all types of precipitation because of how cold it is. we want to you take pictures of it because it may look like snow but it may be graupel. those
