p y a bay area. the answer is nuance, and it's complicated. a new poll shows that a lot of us feel optimistic about the future, but also feel it's getting harder to make it in the bay. the findings come from the annual poll from joint venture silicon valley. that's a think tank of researchers, along with government and business leaders. they surveyed about 1800 people from five bay area counties. the report will be officially unveiled tomorrow, but we're getting an early look tonight. the overall outlook is improving from years past. the percentage of people looking to leave the bay area is down. fewer people also think the bay area is moving in the wrong direction. however, the number of people who do believe the area is moving in the wrong direction, that's pretty high. you see, 62% right there. so what are the area's biggest problems? you probably guessed it housing, homelessness, and the cost of living. nearly half of the people surveyed say they cannot consistently meet their monthly expenses while putting money aside. people we spoke to t

moving the bay area forward. today, hundreds of thousands of health care workers will see a significant bump in their pay as a new minimum wage goes into effect. more than 325,000 health care workers will see their hourly pay increase to 18 to $23 an hour. another 75,000 workers are already making that kind of money. will also see their pay go up indirectly as a result. this applies mostly to low paid medical staff in private facilities. a professor at san francisco university estimates this new minimum wage will amount to an extra 5 to $6000 per year, which he acknowledges is still not a lot of money here in the bay area. but it's an indication of the depth of the problem that the wages for some healthcare workers were so low in these very expensive parts of the city. sorry, the states where especially accommodation costs have been skyrocketing. that something needed to be done to try to address this issue. moving forward, or else we would face, you know, extremely severe shortages and retention problems which a

pete suratos, nbc, bay area news. okay. thank you. pete. two north bay schools will be closed tomorrow following a threat to one elementary school this morning. sky ranger overhead at penngrove elementary near petaluma today after it received a threat and was placed on lockdown. students were eventually bused to a safe location and then reunited with their parents. sonoma county office of education says penngrove elementary will be closed tomorrow, along with petaluma's kenilworth junior high. now, kenilworth didn't receive a threat, but investigators say there was a connection made to that school, so it's going to be closed as a precaution. the district says classes at both schools will be back up and running on wednesday. is our gas going to get cheaper? governor newsom signing a controversial new bill today, hoping to lower prices at the pump. the law requires oil refineries to maintain a minimum two week supply of oil to stop prices from rising in peak driving months. it also allows the california energy commission to evaluate supply and

nbc bay area's velena jones explains. alameda county da pamela price claims her office has been working since august to fix a major backlog in misdemeanor cases after discovering the problem in mid-july. her comments come after a whistleblower in her office told the sf chronicle that more than 1000 misdemeanor cases passed the statute of limitations without charges being filed. it's a number price says she can't confirm. absolutely not. whoever published that number, someone in this office spent time counting manually versus doing the work. price blames the backlog on the prior da. nancy o'malley telling us misdemeanor cases are manually logged and were never properly dated to keep track of the statute of limitations. the fact that it has never been emphasized in this office is a problem that i've walked into. i've learned about it, and i'm now fixing to fix the problem. price says she's increased staffing from 4 to 6 people to manually go through cases, and is working to modify the case management system to include neces

yeah, it's going to be really hot all across the bay area today. usually that's the place where we all go to escape the valley heat, and as we take a look at this heat advisory that's in effect for parts of the north bay in orange, the bright pink is the excessive heat warning, which is basically a step up from a heat advisory. and this is where temperatures will go over 100 degrees for today. so it's going to be dangerously hot with a cool morning start. temperatures in the low 50s in much of the north bay. we're at 50 in santa rosa and it is right now 55 in danville. notice that some spots are a little bit warmer, and that's usually where the wind is moving through a little bit more quickly. that keeps those temperatures from dipping as fast. and then as we take a look at our highs for today, 103 will be the high in martinez. we'll see that as well in napa as well as novato. san francisco also will be hot today with highs in the mid 90s. and there may be parts of the city that make it close to 100 degrees in san jose, 100 today and 109 in gilroy.

we will get into some relief here under sunny skies for much of the bay area. temperatures down in the 60s here to start. we'll begin with 67 in the east bay, north bay at 66. now let's spend some time on those temperatures as we head through our forecast tomorrow, and you'll see there's more triple digits than not. so that's why you just got to remember to drink plenty of water. tomorrow we're going up another 4 to 8 degrees. it will leave us at 101 in san jose, 105 in gilroy. look at this. oakland 95. that's a scorcher for you. 98 in hayward, then out to concord, 104, antioch, 105. we're up to 94. in san mateo, half moon bay, 84, san francisco 91, in downtown. so it's just going to be super, super hot for you there in downtown sf up to santa rosa, 103 napa 102. so when you compare it to records, looks like we'll have several records set tomorrow. santa ros, concord, san francisco, livermore and san jose should all be in record territory. let's take it into our forecast here. we'll get some relief by friday. 76 in sf, i'm also watching some tropical moisture to

here's nbc bay area's emma goss. reporter it was all caught on video as a sideshow took over the intersection of carlos way and blum drive late friday night at an auto dealership nearby. three people wearing red hooded sweatshirts are seen standing on top of the trucks, jumping on the hoods and shattering the windshields. they stopped the hoods, the roofs, glass. they also damaged the dashboards, says leon thomas, the general manager at hilltop chrysler jeep. dodge. ram. it was horrendous. it was it was disappointing. it was disturbing. richmond police were nearby when the sideshow was happening. they said hundreds of vehicles blocked the road, leading to the sideshow, and one police vehicle was damaged by a spectator who threw something at it. in total, seven 2024 ram and ford trucks were damaged. they're now at an auto body repair shop where the full extent and cost of the damage is still being assessed. it's a big financial blow to the companies. in the meantime, thomas said he plans to work with the surrounding d
