head off a planned demonstration against police brutality last night authorities for the bay area rapid transitset off all of the cell phone system figuring it would disrupt the protest organizers. a lot of people think that's going too far. >> if you can't get cell phone service and something happens, what are you going to do? absolutely nothing. >> if us from san francisco, the b.a.r.t. deputy police chief. chief that's an extraordinary step. how did you reach the judgment you could do that. what if there was a pregnant woman who needed medical attention and without warning they pick up their cell phone and it's not working? >> we had adequate staff there present at the station as well as i had actually staffed each train going through that area in both directions with b.a.r.t. personnel. on top of that, we already have in each car two intercomes at ea each end of the train, 20 intercoms and station agents. the cell service was just limited to that small area, a couple steps up a staircase would have given them access to cellular test. >> michael richard, the chief was worried about a disrupt

and in san francisco, the bay area rapid transit authority even shut down cell service in some of itslanned protest over the shooting death of a homeless man by a b.a.r.t. officer. now, that protest never happened. earlier, i talked to lori evans. she is a social media expert who works with law enforcement and she talked about these techniques that are being used to combat the ill use of social media. >> oftentimes, they're finding themselves, the agencies who are thrust into these positions are, they don't understand how the social networks work to begin, so then all of a sudden they're in a position where they're having to, they're being thrust into having to gain intelligence on platforms that they don't understand. and so there are tools to do that. there are tools to monitor them, to automatic it, there are business tools available, there are tools made especially for law enforcement to do that. and they're learning to use with those tools. but i think the ones that are really the law enforcement agencies who are in there, using the tools already, are also on twitter, monitoring
