and mentioning bay bridge a truck that we can't move. but here you see it's labeled bay bridge. but that's actually the grand avenue off ramp from the bay bridge approach. so the flashing lights and the big rig there, we're told 73,000 pounds of rice on this trailer here. so it's a heavy vehicle, a large vehicle. it's got the off ramp closed, but it's not heavily used off ramp. let me show you where that is. approaching the bay bridge and easy drive down the berkeley curve off the eastshore freeway, out of the maze. everything's moving smoothly. we just have this one off ramp that takes you to maritime right here, and also to grand. that's closed. we don't know how long that's going to take to clear, but it's been there for a few hours, affects a small number of commuters. and in fact, it's actually a relatively light commute as things are moving smoothly around the rest of the bay. we have the altamont pass and really carry. it's a pretty mild build right now. yeah. looks good. all right. so we're starting out all clear here in walnut creek. beautiful sunrise even though we've

we're actually going to still be on the western span on the northern edge of the bay bridge. but we're going to wrap around the cables with a light node on each side. so you'll still have the same view into san francisco and the north bay. but the idea here is, as a matter of esthetic equity, we invite all the other communities around the bay area to join in. you know, that's from the bay view and alameda and oakland and richmond and the new emerging neighborhoods of treasure island and yerba buena island, and, you know, we're going to be working closely and carefully with the traffic engineers and chp to make sure this is safe. but we believe that we can share this experience with drivers on the bridge so that as you're entering san francisco, you can go through a magical portal of public art as the city opens up before you. >> sounds really cool. a lot of people getting to see it from all different angles, but is there any concern about people being distracted or just looking up at the lights on the bridge as they're driving? >> of course. but people, you know, people now ha

a bad fire on the bay bridge and a deadly big rig crash in the south bay are making for major traffic headaches tonight, abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in the newsroom tracking the traffic trouble. hey, zach. hey, kristen. >> and there is a lot of that trouble as we kick off one of our busiest memorial day travel weekends in decades. just getting from pleasant hill into the city. took one of our coworkers 2.5 hours this afternoon, and they are not alone. let's start with that mess on the bay bridge. taking another live look here at the bay bridge toll plaza, where traffic is just crawling along. if that eight hours after a big rig fire that shut down several westbound lanes, the big rig carrying oranges caught fire near treasure island around nine this morning, the chp thinks the rear brakes may have started the fire. it took hours for crews to clean up what was left of the truck, and all of the oranges on the road. the driver was not injured. and in the south bay tonight, a deadly crash has part of 101 shut down. two southbound lanes of 101 are closed just north of blos

bay bridge is not the only bay area freeway seeing traffic today. a partial closure of 680 is underway in the san ramon area this weekend. nbc bay area's christie smith has more on the road work ahead and the impacts on drivers. reporter we're a full day into this partial closure of southbound 680, and this is an area that can get congested on an ordinary day. so for the time being, drivers are being urged to find another route. we just try to avoid that's what this driver is doing to try to steer clear of roadwork on 680 near san ramon. else you are just stuck in this traffic and nobody wants to spend the weekend sitting in the traffic. this is what it looked like today, with work happening on a section of the existing roadway. that's well worn. there's potholes, as you say, deteriorated pavement. it's definitely in need of some enhancement. janice mara is with caltrans. the purpose of the partial closure is to remove deteriorated pavement and replace it. so when we reopen at 4 a.m. on monday, there will be a smooth ride for motorists. that means t

bay bridge toll plaza, not bad.ering lights are off and we're moving along pretty well through there. overall not a bad commute little busy into the altamont pass. and if you are commuting into gilroy near 152, there's a crash there with a big rig. so do plan for that. >>> let's get to some breaking news this morning over in the east bay. we are live here in castro valley and you can see a lot of fire crews on scene there. a massive fire broke out early this morning. this is at the lake chabot public market on lake chabot road and quail avenue. still very active and firefighters still putting a lot of water there on the building. the road is closed right now to allow the over 50 firefighters access to knock down the flames and this is again still a very active scene. a lot of smoke in the area. this is what the three alarm fire looked like around 3:30 a.m. just over an hour after the initial call. you can see heavy flames shooting out from the roof of the building there. which is at risk for a partial collapse. now

live look here at the bay bridge and you can see here no metering lights smooth sailing into the city overview of 92 also known as the san mateo bridge, and the dunbarton bridge just below that. everything in the green so moving at the speed limit. as you head across the span both directions between the east bay over to the peninsula. that ride along the peninsula moving along smoothly. now we are tracking brake lights for that ride into the altamont pass. it's busy. 205 getting on to 580 and we're tracking about a 43 minute travel time from tracy over towards the dublin interchange. >>> well, let's get a live look and take a look at the bay area bridge once again this morning. and think about what your commute might look lick in five years. now in the bay area suburbs, self-driving transit cars might be part of that vision. well, it turns out it's probably closer than you think. right now, nearly 300,000 people live in eastern contra costa county. a majority of them commute to other parts of the bay area for work. so that means a lot of traffic along some of the busier areas like hig

if you are driving on the bay bridge, there's a very light delay, if any at all. getting into san francisco also, as you look at some of the other bay area bridges, we're doing very well. so just take it easy out there sometimes in the early morning hours, we do get some pretty serious crashes because people are going rather quickly. also, as we look at the peninsula, that traffic is doing well. if you're driving on 101 into san francisco, it's 401. let's get back to the headlines. thank you. >> sal new. this morning, two san jose police officers are in the hospital after they were shot while responding to a call. it happened at san ignacio boulevard and bernal road near the plaza shopping center. there, police were responding to a disturbance call just before 11:00 last night. when they got there, a man started shooting at officers who fired back at him. they were able to take him into custody and he was taken to the hospital. we still don't have details on his injuries, but one of the officers is recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest. the other was grazed
