double-digit sales tax starts today in several bay area cities. anne makovec joins us live from hayward with one of the cities where people will be paying more starting today. anne. >> reporter: if you are coming out for coffee this morning here in downtown hayward, you're going to want to bring a few extra pennies with you. the sales tax here is now the highest in the state and not only hayward, here's the map of some of the other cities that now have a 10% sales tax. union city, san leandro, albany and el cerrito. before today, the sales tax was 9.5%. but last year, voters approved a tax hike in all five cities. the 10% rate could be sticker shock. >> bought something relatively expensive at 1% will determine a lot. >> reporter: buy a new $25,000 car and you'll spend an extra $250 in sales tax. hayward is planning on using the money to hire more police officers and build better roads. the city says that this new tax could mean an extra $10 million a year. live in hayward, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >>> a very close call for an 11- year-old boy in san
