. >> james bayes has more now from the united nations. >> reporter: well it now is international law,his resolution. it has passed the u.n. security council. the only abstention was from russia. jordan technically proposed the resolution, but all of the work was done by the gulf cooperation council, the countries all involved in the military operation with regard to yemen. worth mentioning that that saudi-lead operation is not mentioned in this resolution not directly mentioned at all. what is mentioned in the resolution and the main thrust of it is towards the houthis. it demands that they end all violence and withdrawal from all of the areas across yemen that they have captured including the capitol, sana'a and introduces new sanctions and arms embargoes not just against the three people that were already sanctioned but against three others. there is an element in the resolution for humanitarian pauses. this is something that ban ki-moon is support to coordinate. although he has to do it in coordination with the government of yemen and remember the government of yemen very closely l

let's bring in james bayes lye at the u.n. james what does this mean? >> reporter: it means this resolution is now international law. the u.n. security council meeting is over. the vote has been passed. we're still seeing live pictures we're seeing live pictures of the russian ambassador who abstained. despite that abstention because it can't stop anything but what that actually means is that there is new pressure on the houthis. that's the first main substantial point. it calls on the houthis to end all violence to withdraw their forces from all areas they have seized including the capitol, sana'a. the other thing that i think is very significant in the resolution is sanctions and the arms embargo. the sanctions have now been extended to two more important figures the main houthi heard and also ali abdullah saleh's son who is a prominent figure in yemen, and a former ambassador of his country, and all of those five now have an arms embargo on them. worth points out that though russia actually wanted an arms embargo on everyone including the government
