while you were sleeping, 4,000 people in baypoint had to pack up and leave their homes. >> this is in the air of sassoon, and they've been told to go to a concord church and pittsburg b.a.r.t. station. pete, there's a large evacuation, a lot of moving parts. what's the latest you've been able to find out. >> reporter: good morning. we're standing at the pittsburg bay parking lot, i think mike mentioned the north parking lot. that's where we're at. several cars here, more than unusual, because folks have been evacuated. we want to show what you the scenes were like when they were evacuated from their homes. they're saying the evacuations were caused bay a utility vault housing valves for a chevron natural gas pipe loon catches fire last night in baypoint. they had a power line fell on the structure following a grass fire earlier in the evening. fire officials do say this specific line is isolated from other pipelines, did you that doesn't mitigate the threat of a possible explosion. we want to show or viewers there are about 4,000 people evacuated, and 4,000 people from about 1400 home

thousands evacuate the baypoint area after a fire in a chevron pipeline vault.re authorities just wrapped up a news conference. bob, what can you tell us? >> reporter: police, fire and chevron just held a news conference here at a fire station in pittsburg. that evacuation of homes still remains in effect while a gas pipeline still burns. this is an underground vault near an am track train tracks at poinsettia and suisun avenues, a grass fired ignited a he line last night in that vault. the concern is it could cause an adjacent 12-inch line to rupture and explode. they have isolated that line and is in the process of purging it with nitrogen. this no longer believe the pipeline is at risk of exploding, but police and fire wants that fire out before letting people home. it could be hours before that purge is complete. reporting live here in pittsburg, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >>> right now -- offshore winds are kind of nonexistent as they're being dominated. as we head into the afternoon, but also bringing a good marine layer. check out this nice shot uses

an evacuation center is set up at calvary temple church in concord and at the pittsburg/ baypoint bart station. maybe 3 or 4 hours from that time, if you do the math, maybe 10 or 11 am, nothing solid just a guesstimate should but right now they believe there is no danger of the gas line exploding but when you are dealing with fire in your dealing with gas anything could happen. that's why the evacuated people, even though there are no visible flames, is the danger beneath their feet and they don't want to mess around and it's better to be safe than sorry. as far as injuries, no injuries, they aren't allowing firefighters close to the gas line, it could go up at any time which is why they are using drones over that. that's important, they want to make sure the flames are out, they want eyes on that location and once it's out then they can say okay the danger is completely over. get people back in their homes. at the news conference, i peppered a lot of questions to authorities including terrence carrie with the contra costa fire department, here is what he said about this developing sit
