over the past few weeks, the bbc two documentary series hospital has demonstrated how a shortage of bedstributes to the pressure on the health service. this can lead to long waits for those needing to be admitted from accident and emergency departments, but also for those needing planned surgery. i sometimes feel that i spend as much energy on trying to organise and manage beds and the movement, the flow, of patients within the hospital to allow us to do what we want to get on with, which is to operate. the programme showed how if beds are not available for patients to recover in safely, operations simply cannot go ahead. now the royal college of surgeons and the nhs body that represents nhs trusts says this is damaging efforts to improve productivity with surgeons left kicking their heels while they wait for beds to be made free. we are waiting for someone to let us do work. it is not good for the staff and it is not good for the patients and it is not good for the efficiency of the nhs. the latest figures from nhs england reveal more than 95% of beds were occupied last week, well above

bbc newsroom live. hospital services in nearly two thirds of england could be cut or scaled back according to bbc analysisplans in different areas. ministers argued that patients will benefit as care is brought closer to people's homes but a major health think tank has questioned the credibility of the plans. protests outside horton hospital in oxfordshire just a few months ago where there are concerns about bed closures and cuts to stroke and critical care. and it's not the only place. right across england proposals for big changes are afoot in the nhs. the bbc has analysed 44 of the transformation and sustainability plans. two thirds include either hospital closures or moving treatments to a different site. more than a third involve cuts to the number of hospitals providing non—emergency treatments and around one third plan to reduce the number of hospitals offering emergency care. proposed closures to hospital beds have been heavily criticised by the think tank the king's fund. more generally, though, it says the plans are the best hope of delivering essential reforms to the nhs, but it says it can't b
