certainly the motels that are on the beach. if people move up to the sixth floor are they safe if the wall of water moves in? >> the larger buildings can with stand that impact. the houses and cars not so much. that's why they are telling everyone to move as far in as possible. you saw the distrucktive force of these waves. the waves around 20-23 feet high. significantly higher than what we may experience here. the force of these waves is just so strong i think it's a matter of not necessarily the level of distrucktive force but how far inland it will go with a six foot wave as opposed to a 20-foot wave. with these waves moving across the open ocean the speed of which they move depends on the depth of the ocean. out in the middle of the pacific they are moving as fast as a jet airliner. when they get to shore it dispates. >> you and i worked together in los angeles. i knew you as a surfer, as a sky diver, as a daredevil person. in the midst of all of this, did you get shaken up by all of this? what are you thinking about? >> re

this is the dirtiest beach in southern california. doheny beach. i've surfed this twice -- i've gotten sick both times. narrator: san juan creek, a concrete flood control channel, flows directly to doheny beach. moriarty: the concrete you can almost think of as a big water slide for pollutants to go to sea level. man: if it rains more than 2/10 of an inch, the county puts out a health advisory for all beaches in the county. that totaled 75 days in 2006. so it's sort of a frightening thing that it's so polluted that every time it rains, we have to stay out of the ocean for three days. moriarty: to be sick after surfing isn't like, "oh, i have a runny nose," and tomorrow it's gone. can be a lot of different things. nelsen: they include gastroenteritis, which is an upset stomach, and sinus infections, ear infections, eye infections, and there's also virulent versions of streptococcus that can actually cause severe illness and even death. moriarty: our goal with surfrider foundation is essentially to have the city understand that the water is, in fact,

in addition to 7, which we will do all over the city, we are going to add chinatown and north beach to our city streets -- to our sunday streets. that is going to be wonderful. it is one i have been trying to oversee as city administrator, working with our liveable streets and our chinatown chamber of commerce, our chinatown merchants association -- they are all very excited, and we will be looking at the way we have been using grant avenue, all the way through north beach, from california, across broadway, so we will have more details about that, but we do not have a date announced for that. we are working out the details, and we will listen carefully to all of the needs and concerns of our merchants along the area, residents, to make sure it is successful. the nice part of sunday streets -- it is not just the physical closing of the streets. it is really the way we work with all elements of our community to make sure we bring out things that are great for kids, for families, and the merchants will have an opportunity to read prioritize the way they welcome their traditional visitors

take a look at this unusual sight captured right here from ocean beach. rick gutierrez picked this video up of a water spout. he said he was in his house and it started to turn very, very dark where he was. and he captured this video. he said he watched it along with pea-size hail coming down simultaneously. i asked him, were you scared? what were your thoughts? what was running through your head at that time? he said he watched it long enough to where he felt safe. he did form a plan. he said that if it did get any closer, he was ready to hit the deck. now i'm back out here live at ocean beach where thing are a little more calm in terms of the weather. one thing that has not calmed down at all are those waves. take a look at those giant waves out there. why we have high surf advisory in place until 9:00 p.m. tomorrow. 14 to 17-foot swells. it is not keeping people away. we just watched this guy go out there. he is wind surfing in that very dangerous conditions. we do not recommend that you do so. in fact, with this next storm on the way on sunday, you pr

you wouldn't know it necessarily though by what we are seeing out here on the beach. if you take a look over here, check it out. people just kind of hanging out near the water with their dogs taking walks near the beach. this is an area that was under evacuation orders earlier today. many people evacuated here. they grab what they could, packed up and took off. and fortunately, the flooding and damage that hit other areas never materialized here. here's what residents saw. we time lapsed video. there was a wave pattern on linda mar beach and all over the bay area, causing the waves to recede and fill back in over and over. it was such a spectacle that dozens of people, many evacuees, came out armed with cameras, binoculars and cell phones just to watch it happening from a safe overlook setback from the coast. residents told me they weren't just impressed with mother nature, but also with the way authorities executed the evacuation. emergency calls went out, signs quickly went up pointing out evacuation routes. school was cancelled. and police spent the morning combing
