we are here today next to the beach near the cemetery of colville. a peaceful beach.ttlefield, and this is what we want to remember today 70 years later. in history there are always challenges to face. things sometimes go wrong. and in the pre-hours of dawn, everything started to go wrong on omaha beach. the air force's bombs had landed behind the german defenses. the navy's artillery had missed its target and the tanks that were to support the infantry had sunk. the soldiers of the first waves of the assault found themselves lightly armed. they faced mortars, rifles, heavy artillery, and machine guns. they were mutilated, massacred while the survivors were pinned down on the sand amongst the dead and wounded under deadly fire while the tide came in. the nazis were sure of themselves. they believed they would repair all assaults thanks to the bunkers of the atlantic wall. they had not reckoned with the fact that in democracies a great ideal gives great courage. and that man would give their lives to save other lives. on /* on the continent of liberty. as jenot mar bra

and stop the slaughter on the beach below.ericans poured out across this ground all over the countryside. they joined a fellow american warriors from utah beach and allies from juneau, sward and gold. along with the airborne and the french patriots. private first class russell pickett, of the 29th division's famed 116th infantry regiment had been wounded in the first wave that landed on omaha beach. at a hospital in england, private pick it vowed to return to battle. i am going to return, he said. i am going to return. six days after d-day, he rejoined his company. two thirds had been killed already. many had been wounded. within 15 minutes of the invasion. they lost 19 just from the small town of bedford, virginia alone. before long a grenade left private pick it and he was gravely wounded. so badly wounded. again, he chose to return. he did not care. he had to be here. he was then wanted a third time. and laid unconscious for 12 days. they thought it was gone. they thought he had no chance. russell pickett is the last known

you need to get off the beach. and to be able to figure out how to do it, to lead other men to do that, it is something. not every soldier is made to lead other men in the dark of night or in this case, relatively early in the morning. and, it is situations like omaha beach where you find those who are able to lead other men in the dark of night, metaphorically. >> when you look at, we all know we won omaha beach with heavy casualties. utah was not as bad, obviously. but as we approach the anniversary and you see these guys in the front row, it is really the last time they will be able to go back for a major anniversary, most of them are in their mid-90s. the 80th anniversary, they probably will not make it back. >> you guys are gonna be there. >> they will be there. speak and they are going to ride their bike. >> so when you look at them and you know that there were 16.1 million americans who served in the war and there are 445,000 left, what is their legacy when you look, when you sit here and look at these guys.
