beaumont had its own beaumont had its own oil exchange or stock exchange at the time. so this building represents that stock exchange. there were over 600 oil companies that were incorporated after the big boom. and when the gusher came in. and so the trading floor -- the actual building was probably a little -- much larger than this to accommodate the trading floor. this picture up here gives you some idea of what the original looked like. so they would be trading stock in the front. in the back of the building, you had a print shop that was printing stock just as quickly as they could. for all of these oil companies. and, you know, some of that stock was good and some was not good. but i was talking to a printer the other day and, you know, that's not the printer's job to decide. so they were churning it out as quickly as they could. so while all of these buildings are replicas they do represent actual businesses operating at the time in gladys city. for instance, this is gibson's dry goods store. this is where you would come to get clothing or your sewing needs. tha

of beaumont history, 1900-1950 in micro cos. it shows how a wealthy southeast texas family lived in the first half of the 20th century. the mcfaddins were a family that came to texas from tennessee in the 1820s and they settled in this part of texas, far southeast texas in 1833. they had cattle, and later on they began to acquire land to put this cattle on. when oil was discovered in this area in 1901, it brought the mcfaddins a lot more money than they had already had. they were already pretty comfortable in their own right. but when oil was discovered in this area, the land that the lucas gusher, the original well was on, plus a lot of the land that was subsequently drilled upon and successfully belonged to the mcfaddin family because they had spent so many years accumulating all that pasture land for their cattle and it was right in the middle of where the oil was found. just the whole area profited so much from the oil. william mcfaddin was a tough man. some people even called him ruthless because his life was built around a

that was one small step that was taken here in beaumont to begin the desegregation. booker facen and joe grifen and those other black gentlemen did get to enjoy the golf course and many played here for many years. it was a good ending for the black golfers and a first step in the desegregation of facilities in beaumont. the next summer, the same three black lawyers went after a bigger prize. they -- they went after the desegregation of lamar university here in beaumont, state university, four-year college. lamar university was, by charter, for white students only. so there were some black students applied for admission there. they were refused. and so the three black lawyers joined with two black plaintiffs, versy jackson, 26-year-old woman who had graduated from high school and who had attended texas southern, and then a james anthony cormier, a black student who had just graduated from blessed sacrament high school here in l beaumont. it was a simple case for judge cecil and the lawyers. again, brown versus board of education was about the public schools but there

she grew up in beaumont texas with a mother that strongly emphasized the importance of education. if she always said to do what is right, not what is easy. her teacher noticed that b.j. had a very talented athletic potential. she instructed her to sign up for all sports, including tennis, a sport that she knew nothing about. she began to teach yourself hitting balls against the wall and by the time she was a senior in high school, she was ranked of the state's no. 1 tennis player in her age class. this led to a successful career were she was trained p byancho go -- by pancho gonzales. it was billie jean keaing that dubbed her b.j. notably, she toured with the united states tennis association, and she served at a time when there was a segregated system. certainly we have come a long way since that time, and b.j. has come along with that. at 50, b.j. had a change of careers and also started to work as a substitute teacher. she was immediately hired to be the key test coach. and almost there came to alternative school. it has blossomed with championships in many of the sports areas.
