was arbor day and part of the beautification process. we did a first in a supervisor avalos'district. they did the first flash dance -- it was a lot of fun to begin that way. when i was a city administrator, dpw improved the avenue along that way, planting the trees and shrubs -- planting trees and shrubs to call traffic and but i the corridor. at the time, those medians were approved with one time dollars for the board of supervisors and dpw improved as many medians as possible but that funding. the end result looks great and i would like to continue to work along that avenue and many others look in san francisco. but as with all the programs, there are constraints. we're still facing a large general fund deficit. streetscape design and greeting projects often come straight out of the general fund. while we have received good news, we're still facing a two- year deficits of $170 million and $312 million. we've had a successful street bond which will provide us with meaningful resources to do projects like this in districts across the ci

planning process to think about the need for parks or there is rejuvenation, landscapes, and beautification, but a place where the kids can play. it is a story that has been before you many times, but it is investment. if we are going to do the mission that families need us to do, the city is committed to keeping families and keeping them happy, healthy, and thriving, as a matter of public policy, we have to make a decision to invest more. which of 12% of the city's land, less than 2% of the general fund. we have been asked to reduce our spending over the last seven years. the public demand has not dissipated. and if we want to keep the families that we have, and we have more families that need and demand the services, it is only going to increase. i would much rather see haunt and investment in playgrounds and public recreation. it is critical. the public agrees. 82% of the respondents said that the city's recreation and park department he more funding. eight out of 10 respondents spoke -- focused on playground equipment. maintaining the safety is extremely important. president chiu, you a

we have had several examples of beautification projects that people undertake to address local environmental issues that can be things like training people to be aware of litter, which is still a persistent problem in many communities. it can mean understanding local issues whether it be a small business that may need some assistance to understand it's having an impact on the community. we have had lots of people come together on watershed issues. pharmaceutical collection days or hazardous waste collection days. and efforts to encourage businesses to separate waste in order to give -- i have one from marquette, michigan. it was a 2006 care level grant. earth keepers partnership included 140 congregations, 25 regional pharmacies, police departments, the indian community. dental offices and financial community. all coming together to protect their environment. >> great program. thank you. i yield back the balance of my time. >> the gentleman's time has expired. i thought you may grab my question when you were talking about the cooling tower issue, bobby. otherwise, we could work together on t
