in 1969 i learned and have reason for you to come back to that beautiful city soon. i'd love to work with you on a relationship between amsterdam and san francisco because there's so much in common between the two cities. and a lot of things that san francisco can learn from san francisco and the other way around. and my hope for these two days is that we will have something out of it as well and i'm sure we will have something out of it as well. and you probably will not remember amsterdam in the 1960's and the 1970's. i'm old enough to remember amsterdam in the 1970's and it was all different at that time. there was a lot of congestion, a lot of cars in town and it changed. it changed by changing the culture, changing policy and implementation of policies with hard work and i think hillie talens will show some figures and numbers about the travel that we did in the nether land as well. and about the economic benefits that investing in bicycle infrastructure gives to us. if people from here -- they just did a great city -- study about additional investments in the n

i became american in the beautiful city of san francisco three years ago, so i can relate a lot to what you said earlier. i am here today because we are presenting a collection, an important collection of original art from iraq, and i wanted to share a very brief story about how i came across this article and why we are sharing it today. it is back in 2003, there was just a ceasefire in baghdad, right after, you know the second world war,. and someone flew straight into jordan, hired two bodyguards, hired a four-wheel drive, and went straight into baghdad. why did she do that? because she knew that the baghdad art scene was one of the most vibrant in the arab world and actually in the world. there was a lot of very good talent that had been under the operation of the former regime still building a fantastic collection of art. she went to the bag that school of art. she asked to meet with the top 10 young artists there. she got a few their paintings and smuggled them back to france. she had a show, and i fell in love with this art. tin years later, we sell art online. i wanted to find a

we draw our inspiration from being a diversity, a beautiful city to live in, and an international cityit is a place where people come to discuss and nurture new ideas. we are important people, always working to make things better. it is in that spirit that i want to talk about our efforts on central market. i made revitalizing central market a signature economic development initiative, and the keystone is the central market payroll tax exclusion. the payroll tax exclusion incentivizes companies to both invest in midmarket and create jobs. i want to recognize supervisor kim and board president david hitchiu for their work with me. this is part of a broader strategy that includes redesigning the street and sidewalks for the better market street initiative. that is a streetscape overhaul that will result in a more attractive, walkable, and business-friendly corridor. the project is in its planning phase right now, and it will be implemented from the ferry building two octavia boulevard in 2015. and the street is -- when the street is repaid. public safety enhancements along market street.

that broke lives, homes and businesses, the loma prieta earthquake changed the landscape of this beautiful city, but more importantly, it brought out the best in all of us. in the midst of chaos, uncertainty and even death, neighbors looked after one another and helped each other turn off gas lines and shared water and food with each other and assisted the elderly and people with special needs. the fire department battled multiple fires on multiple fronts. the police department ensured order in the hardest-hit parts of the city. thousands of emergency responders from across the state provided assistance through our mutual aid system. the american red cross provided assistance and raised money to help the survivors. we mourn the losses in the whole community and the community came together to recover and rebuild. during the rerecover phase we looked for how we could be better prepared and promised those we lost that we would be better prepared. since the loma prieta earthquake we have made great strides. we rebuilt the city stronger, and great strides in retro fits especially on the bay bridge a
