in 1969 i learned and have reason for you to come back to that beautiful city soon. i'd love to work with you on a relationship between amsterdam and san francisco because there's so much in common between the two cities. and a lot of things that san francisco can learn from san francisco and the other way around. and my hope for these two days is that we will have something out of it as well and i'm sure we will have something out of it as well. and you probably will not remember amsterdam in the 1960's and the 1970's. i'm old enough to remember amsterdam in the 1970's and it was all different at that time. there was a lot of congestion, a lot of cars in town and it changed. it changed by changing the culture, changing policy and implementation of policies with hard work and i think hillie talens will show some figures and numbers about the travel that we did in the nether land as well. and about the economic benefits that investing in bicycle infrastructure gives to us. if people from here -- they just did a great city -- study about additional investments in the n

it was great for them to be about to celebrate here in our beautiful city of san francisco.night, we had a celebration with the filipinos eddy pinay educational partnership, who are our teachers and being trained to come in and remind our students of our heritage and our culture and the beauty of the work in the belief we have in our filipino community. last month, we were able to secure the funding to start our -- to restart our program at balboa high school, with the wonderful support of the united way of the bay area. these are all wonderful things for us to celebrate, and it is such an honor to work under our first asian-american mayor here in san francisco. and these are too many firsts that have taken way too long for our community. but it is one that we should always celebrate and embrace, because we have so much to be proud of, so much culture to share, and so much of our heritage to remember. on this month, we celebrate. but it is not just this month that we celebrate. this is something that we embrace 355 days a year. because we, as a people, are proud, and it is s

oakland is a beautiful city and there are different ways to disagree. >> today, a group is asking to take more pond. the news came in city hall where windows were broken. lines of communication really need to be open between the occupy oakland people and city and so far, i don't think that's happened very effectively. >> we need our cops in our neighborhood to protect i. we are the first most dangerous city, violent crime in california. the fourth in the united states. >> reporter: they say that because the cops are so preoccupied with occupy oakland, they can't defend the rest of the city. now the city council will have to decide if the en campment stays or go. >> if we move them out, i don't want to about pull ourselves anything thinking that will stop. >> reporter: we are supposed to get a briefing from police in the city right at this hour. we'll have all the details from that later on today. no word on injuries just yet. one of the things that police do want us to know, want the city to know, a very small percentage of the people took part of these violent incidents last night. t

we draw our inspiration from being a diversity, a beautiful city to live in, and an international cityit is a place where people come to discuss and nurture new ideas. we are important people, always working to make things better. it is in that spirit that i want to talk about our efforts on central market. i made revitalizing central market a signature economic development initiative, and the keystone is the central market payroll tax exclusion. the payroll tax exclusion incentivizes companies to both invest in midmarket and create jobs. i want to recognize supervisor kim and board president david hitchiu for their work with me. this is part of a broader strategy that includes redesigning the street and sidewalks for the better market street initiative. that is a streetscape overhaul that will result in a more attractive, walkable, and business-friendly corridor. the project is in its planning phase right now, and it will be implemented from the ferry building two octavia boulevard in 2015. and the street is -- when the street is repaid. public safety enhancements along market street.

that broke lives, homes and businesses, the loma prieta earthquake changed the landscape of this beautiful city, but more importantly, it brought out the best in all of us. in the midst of chaos, uncertainty and even death, neighbors looked after one another and helped each other turn off gas lines and shared water and food with each other and assisted the elderly and people with special needs. the fire department battled multiple fires on multiple fronts. the police department ensured order in the hardest-hit parts of the city. thousands of emergency responders from across the state provided assistance through our mutual aid system. the american red cross provided assistance and raised money to help the survivors. we mourn the losses in the whole community and the community came together to recover and rebuild. during the rerecover phase we looked for how we could be better prepared and promised those we lost that we would be better prepared. since the loma prieta earthquake we have made great strides. we rebuilt the city stronger, and great strides in retro fits especially on the bay bridge a

safer for the growing number of people walking, biking, taking transit, and getting around our beautiful city. i am going to share about eight or so slides with you very briefly. you may be seeing more people biking. you are not making that up. seven of 10 san franciscans bike in the city. it may be a family on sunday streets. you remember the picture from last year, folks coming out to ride recreational or to explore the city and waterfront by bike every now and then. there has been an increase here official counts showed a 58% increase in the number of people biking just in the last four years, and we are really noticing that. our bike lanes are more crowded, and we're working with the city on that. if you do not mind going back a couple. thank you. and just a little bit about what we do on bicycle safety and education, which is really the focus here. we hold popular sessions around the city, free bike education class is for adults who want to learn to ride safely and responsibly. this is a picture of one held two or three weeks ago. the portico hosted this -- the port co-hosted this. you s
