almost two years ago this committee traveled to beckley, west virginia, where we heard chilling testimony from the families and miners about the unbelievable conditions in that mine. most of which you listed just in your opening testimony, mr. chairman. so i won't repeat it, but leo long, a lifelong miner and grandfather of one of the 29 miners who lost his life testified that day. mr. long said, i'm asking for you all to please do something for the rest of the coal miners that's in the mines. i pray for it every night, every day. if you don't do something, something like this is going to happen again. mr. long, we hear your cry. massey failed to prevent this and failing to comply with long established safety any mine workplaces. massey failed to prevent this tragedy because it didn't quench the ignition or shore up the mine roof to keep the mine ventilated and it failed to keep the mine rock dust to prevent coal dust explosion. on top of massey's failure to follow basic safety protection, it also engaged in a pattern of obstruction. massey routinely provided mass inspections which gave f

whether in beckley, ravens wood, i heard the same thing from the people of my state. we don't understand why hardworking middle-income people are paying as much in the tax rate as the wealthy in our country. take our coal miners who go to the mines every day to make a living for themselves and our family, they mine the coal producing the energy this country needs but they are paying higher tax rates than some making $1 million a year or more. where i come from it's not fair, mr. president. and where it come from, it doesn't make any sense. where i come from, that means our system needs to be fixed in a real, responsible and fiscally sound way that reduces our debt. let me be clear, i'm not begrudging anyone who has worked hard, taken a risk or who has done extremely well financially, but we have to have a solid country under us to achieve those goals, and we need to put fairness back in the tax system to get this country on solid ground again. and if we want a fair system, that means that there shouldn't be a privilege that allow the very wealthy to pay a lower rate t
