the beckworth fire in california is now the largest fire in the state, burning over 90,000 acres.zens of homes in northeastern california in the town of doyle have been lost to the quickly-spreading flames. joining us is nbc's jacob ward. officials are desperate to contain the fires, but the current weather conditions seem to be making things worse. what have they told you and how are they trying to protect the power grid there? >> reporter: that's right, jeff. just north of where we are standing is a pair of fires, one of which is burning out of control inside california and then the bootleg fire in oregon threatening the electrical supply to california. that is because of a linkage that forms sort of a central nervous system of infrastructure up and down the west coast. it begins in oregon and runs all the way down toward southern california. it's called the california/oregon interchange. it is a sort of interdependent arrangement. it is absolutely under threat by fire at the moment. when you listen to officials describe the kind of flames they're seeing, it's pretty disturbing.

and in northern california, the beckworth fire is two-thirds contained, but it's sparking an evacuationst michelle grossman is with me now to break it all down. let's start with this oh oppressive heat back east. what can east coasters expect in the next few days? >> we continue to sweat in the northeast. it ooh going to be sweltering with temperatures in the 90s, feeling like 100 or over 100 in many despites. heat alerts posted along the mid-atlantic. you can see that in the orange, including new york city, philadelphia, also baltimore. today's going to be a hot day. we do get a break. unfortunately that's going to come with storms before we see more seasonable temperatures come monday and tuesday. heat advisories for 27 million people. there are hot temperatures some of this is a setup for today. we have a cold front that's going to move slowly through this very hot, very humid air mass. that's going to spark storms, heavy rain, maybe hail, even the chance for tornadoes. keep that in mind as you're out and about. we could also see flash flooding where we could see downpours of 2 inche
