i'm becky quick with andrew ross sorkin and joe kernan.es, a big day ahead of the jobs report. the futures are indicated higher the dow futures up by 29 points, s&p futures slightly higher as well. everything is resting on what we hear just 90 minutes from now when we get the government's august jobs report. consensus forecast calling for 125,000 new nonfarm payroll jobs. the unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 8.3% after what we heard from abc yesterday there are some people who are expecting a slightly higher number than even the 125. shares of pandora could take a hit today. "the wall street journal" reports that apple is considering its own custom radio service similar to the one pandora offers. apple wouldn't comment on the report. and the yield on spanish ten-year bonds has fallen below the 6% level for the first time since may. this all comes after the unveiling of the ec b's new bond buying plan yesterday. at the peak that yield had been well above 7% and that's a level that is considered unsustainable over the long t

what are the predictions becky? >> 125,000 which is down from 163,000 we saw last month. >> to be honest with you, i've said this on the program for the last four months. now it's not really important. they don't vote on the jobs report, they're voting on what happened with the economy. jerry ford never got the benefit of any of that. the uptick started in september and it was too late. the jobs report is an indicator. it doesn't change how people feel about it if they don't happen to have a job. we are where we are with the economy. it will muddle along. it's certainly better to have 125,000 new jobs than it is to be losing 600,000 jobs a month which is what we were doing when barack obama took the oath of office. the republicans will make the case that you're not better off. we're going to make the case that you are better off. not as well off as we'd like, but much better off than we were when we started in 2008. >> having said that you'd rather see a stronger number and see a drop in the unemployment rate? >> ab

cnbc's becky quick is here. so becky, is this going to drive the market upwards?it's giving us a little bit of a boost this morning, but right now those -- up 2.2% is better than people had been expecting and it's better than the initial read we got that was 1.6. but there are a few things -- we did hear from fedex, and the company actually said it's lowering it's guidance for the quarter because of a weak economy. fedex is usually a pretty good indicator of what you can expect with the rest of the companies and the rest of the economy. the big thing that has been the focus today, is the ecb, the european central bank. they would be doing bond buying to try and prop up and make sure that those markets don't get driven in too far of a negative direction. those reports have not been confirmed and that's got people bouncing back and forth. but the big news is tomorrow when we actually hear of the european central bank. >> you and i are going to have a test off, i'll do a bunch of political acronyms and you do those central bank acronyms. >>> police here in charlotte

becky quick here with our market rundown. that's what everybody is wondering, the first piece of information after the president's acceptance speech tonight is going to be that 8:30 jobs report tomorrow. >> you know, the entire betting on wall street changed a lot today, chuck, because we got two pieces of information that paint a pretty strong picture for tomorrow at least if you take these words or these numbers at their face value. first of all, the monthly jobless claims, they were down by about 12,000 to 365,000. that's good news. even better news is what we heard from adp, the private employment measure of things, they looked at the month and saw a huge number of jobs created, 201,000. that was well above the 140,000 that was expected from this report. and by the way, adp nailed the numbers last month in terms of what to expect from the government two days later. what we can look at this time around is a lot of people saying we'd only been looking for 125,000 when we get that monthly government jobs report tomorrow, if

becky quick? >> things are opening a little mix dad.daq slightly lower and dow and s&p are slightly higher. we got some disappointing economic numbers this morning. economists looked for housing starts to increase by 2.5%. they were only up by 2.3%. that may not sound like a big miss but housing's been a key. economists say you won't see a big change in the jobs picture until you see a change in the housing. it is responsible for so many jobs in not only construction but so many of the industries that are related to that, transportation for shipping goods to those homes to things like home depot and lowe's and things that supply details to go into those homes. that's a big key. we're watching that closely. also we've been hearing from some of the big retailers about what they plan to do this holiday season. kohl's says it will increase its holiday hiring by more than 10% over last year. target saying it is looking to hire between 80,000 and 90,000 new employees. it is a little bit below what they hired last year of 92,000. target does s
