let's get back to becky who is live covering all this in cairo at this hour. becky? >> yes, we are going take a very short break, i believe. at this point, we'll be back after this. >>> at 20 past ten or so local time in cairo, it is a very warm welcome back to this special program here on cnn. i'm becky anderson for you. all the political and economic uncertainty in egypt now prevails. what the future holds is unclear at this point. what we do know is it is a new day and a new dawn. the transitional president has been sworn in. the military intervening some 13 hours ago and ousting the former president, morsi. rounding out and arresting members of the muslim brotherhood overnight. very uncertain times, as i say, going ahead here in egypt. we are live in cairo today with the international crisis group. many questions. many unanswered questions at this point. what do you make of what we have seen and heard over the past hours? >> well, i mean it's a very chaotic scene at the moment. we are not sure where the country is exactly headed. we have completely done away with

becky? >> fascinating, isn't it? perhaps not so surprising when you consider the egyptian president's, former president's calls for jihad in syria. what about the reaction from a country like qatar, for example? have we heard an official reaction from doha? because we do know that at least the qataris have been supporting what was the former government and former president here, mohamed morsi. any official announcement from doha this morning? >> reporter: it's a very good point you're making, becky. and the silence from cattar is absolutely telling. all eyes in the region qatar. why? because as you said, qatar had strongly backed the muslim brotherhood in egypt. they had invested billions of dollars in trying to prop up morsi and the muslim brotherhood there. they have so far not issued any statements. people are wondering because qatar is trying to be the regional power player. they have been making bold moves the last couple years when it comes to the arab spring, when it comes to egypt, when it comes to countries

first, i want to start with becky. response, i think a lot of people have been taken aback at how quickly this all unfolded. the protests are relatively recent, the military gives a 48-hour ultimatum to president morsi. he doesn't achieve any success with the protesters, there's no political solution, and that's it, he's out pretty quick for a middle eastern koup. >> absolutely. it was really remarkable, just 24 hours ago, we heard from president morsi. he made his speech, a 45-minute speech to the nation, long in rhetor rhetoric, short in specifics, but some 50 times he talked about being the legitimate president of egypt. he was talking to his constituents, effect tiff live. people will tell you he was effectively fluffing the military, that had basically gave him 48 hours or get out, and that's exactly what they did. you pointed out only 48 hours ago, it seems not quite as big here in tahrir square, by what's called the rebel movement, a huge coalition of opposition group, really making their voices heard in this sq

i'm becky quick. let's take a look at the markets around the globe starting right here in the united states with wall street's record run. the dow and the s&p finishing at new highs for the third straight session. investors will now turn their attention to earnings news and congressional testimony. the futures this morning are indicated slightly higher after the dow and the s&p eeked out those gains yesterday. a gain of about 18 points yesterday for the dow. right now the dow futures indicated up by close to 10 points. goldman sachs is the next big financial firm to report earnings. they expect results to come in at $2.82 a share. navenlt, we expect those numbers in the next half hour. coke is expected to give her to shares for the second quarter. the dow component cfo will joins first at 7:50 eastern time to talk about those results. also, johnson & johnson will be out with near record highs. j & j is expected to report $1.39 a share. overseas, the nikkei hitting a seven-woke high, finishing marginal

i'm becky quick with joe kernen and andrew ross sorkin. we have several key economic numbers that are going to be released during "squawk box" today ahead of the independence day holiday. everything crammed in on wednesday because of the holiday tomorrow. at 7:30 eastern time, we'll get the challenger report. that measures job cuts. at 8:15 a.m., the adp unemployment report. economists are looking for an increase of 160,000. then the initial jobless claims. it is wednesday, but we get the claims today. they are expected to rise to 350,000. the markets will be looking at today's numbers for clues on what to expect from the friday's june employment report. a lot of this is what has been happening overseas. in europe, the major markets are sliding today. major worries about what to expect in portugal, a lot of unrest there with everything that has been happening with their government. portuguese stocks down by 5.4%. and that has been rippling through the rest of the european markets. spain is down by 2.75%. france off by 1.50. you have simila

i'm becky quick along with joe kernen. andrew is off today. let's start off with this week's economic calendar. we have big numbers. today pending home sales and the dallas fed survey. tomorrow, the fed begins a two-day policy setting meeting with a decision announcement that is expected on wednesday. also tomorrow, the s&p case schiller home price index, consumer confidence and housing vacancies. on wednesday, in addition to that fomc statement, we'll be paying attention to adp employment report and the advance reading of second quarter gdp. a lot of economists expect gdp to come in less than 1%, but the government will also issue a special release of revisions going back to 1929. so that could make the economy look slightly better. government hasn't issued major revisions since 2009. then on thursday we get the weekly jobless claims, manufacturing pmi, ism manufacturing, construction spending, and auto sales. and then finally on friday, we get that big july nonfarm payrolls report. economists are looking for about 184,000 jobs to have been a
