becky anderson cnn abu dhabi. >> joining me now is a professor of middle eastern politics and internationalelations at the london school of economics and political science. he is the author of this book "the new middle east protest and revolution in the arab world" thank you for joining us from london. the iran deal reaffirms that under no circumstances will iran ever seek develop or acquire any nuclear weapons. but not everyone is convinced. do they have reason to be concerned and was there any better alternative to the iran nuclear deal that was reached? >> rosemary my simple answer would be let's give diplomacy a chance. let's see if the iranian leadership will comply with the agreement. 35 years of institutionalized hostility between iran and the western powers particularly the united states. more than three decadence look where we are, iran was and is six months away of acquiring the capability of a nuclear weapon even though the international community imposed one of the most stringent sanctions regime against iran. iran has been able to almost acquire the capability. why not give pea

becky anderson, cnn, about bu d -- abu dhabi. >> you can understand, bob, can't you, the cynicism here about whether or not iran will live up to the deal. obviously the u.s. side talking about how it is about verification. how can we be sure we can verify what the iranians are doing? >> max, this regime, if it goes through is extremely intrusive, including a military facility. the monitoring system, i have yet to see anything this comprehensive. it would be difficult for the iranians to cheat in any big way. more than that, they have a motivation for making it work. they are suffering economically. at the same time, they are doing well politically between lebanon and iraq and the rest of it. frankly, i think iran is ripe for this and this is the beginning of a much wider understanding with teheran. something we haven't sneen 30 years. >> is that true, when the money starts to rush in and there's a temptation to, you know -- that's going to change the dynamic so much. it's a huge amount of money now rushing in to iran. >> a huge amount of money. at the same time, the iranians are tired

i want to bring in becky anderson in abu dhabi.ps of the sanctions and the fear its neighbors will do with the lifeline money? >> reporter: that is an interesting question. there's been very little reaction officially here in the gulf with the news of the pending announcement of the deal with iran. what tehran has agreed to is what we are waiting to see. it will strengthen the deal not weaken it. on the face this will be a very difficult deal to celticlysell sell particularly here in the gulf. iran at odds with the sunni region. tehran opposed by the people here in the middle east. rife with conflict in syria and lebanon. also remember the tribal monarchies here. questioned by the islamic republic leadership. as ever this is more nuance. there are concerns about the region's security in the face of iran with the more sophisticated weaponry perhaps, there is a real economic cost and benefit of iran brought in from the cold. let's look at the saudi stock market today. you see the costs there. lower. as the all important oil price sli
