cnn's becky anderson is live in tell aleve. y, what's the latest on the fight against hamgs militants still on israeli territory? the idf says they've taken control of their own territory, although it did take longer than they expected. so what's next? >> reporter: yeah, the idf this morning, saying that they do now have control in all communities, on the israeli side of the border. but they say, they are still fighting militants on that side, so there are still breaches that they are trying to fix. look, the massive effort over the last, what, 36 hours, or 40 hours now, has been to secure and protect the communities on that southern side of the israel/gaza border. and we know, just the devastating impact, those breaches have had. 700 israelis dead, as awe you rightly point out. 260 of those were youngsters at a music festival on saturday morning. and we also know there are so many hostages who have been taken from that music festival and from these communities around the border. and more on that, of course in a moment. but that

. >> for more, let's go to becky anderson who is joining us live from tel aviv. what is the latest on what we're learning about the attack and the ongoing after math? >> reporter: yeah, i think it would be fair to say that we're in completely unchartered territory here. and you can see that just from the reporting that you just showed from nic there. the israeli prime minister as we've been suggesting has declared war at this point. he says israel will win and i quote him, he says the enemy will pay an unprecedented price. what that war will look like and just what that price might be in terms of lives on both sides of course is as yet unclear. but i think in the hours to come, i know in the hours to come, it will become more apparent. israel has continued to target gaza. 500 strikes or more as we understand it. warning residents to get out of their homes quite where they think that they will go and what is a very, very densely populated area. it is unclear, but it is also said that it will stop electricity, fuel and goods being supplied into gaza. so the siege t

cnn's becky anderson is joining me now. are you hearing at this point as far as what the sticking points are, and where they are in these negotiations? >> reporter: well, that's difficult to say, because diplomatic sources who are familiar with these negotiations have specifically said to me that the talks are ongoing. they remain very positive. they say that they have had a breakthrough, and while there are still outstanding issues and we remain hopeful, we do not have the details, the parameters of what is being discussed specifically, nor what those outstanding issues are. what we do know is that one of the hamas leadership in beirut yesterday, in an interview with "the washington post" suggested that the group was proposing that all foreign nationals were released in return for a five-day cease-fire. the hamas leader went on to say to "the washington post" that israeli civilians would be released if israel, in turn, agreed to the release of palestinian women and teenagers in israeli prisons, and they want the rafah bord

cnn's becky anderson joins me now from tel aviv with more. what have you learned, becky? >> diplomatic sources have confirmed to me that the -- are in touch with both israel and hamas on mediating some sort of effort to get hostages released. now, as we understand it from these diplomatic sources, this would be a prisoner -- an exchange of women and children taken by hamas in gaza at present in exchange for women and teenagers held in israeli prisons. and what i'm told is that neither side has rejected this idea. so, there is some optimism, certainly, around what is going on at present. now, of course there is some precedent for this. the israeli soldier who was released back in 2011, who'd been abducted back in 2005 on the israeli border near gaza, he was released in exchange for at the time over 1,000 prisoners held in israeli prisons. now, let's just provide a little bit of context for this, why the cat ris in this stage? well, they are in a decent position to do this. let's consider they've got an open line of communication with hamas. that was actually opened at the

let's go now to becky anderson in doha, qatar. what are you tracking from there? >> yeah.s interesting, earlier on today, what a positive note from diplomatic sources who are very familiar with these qatar-led talks to try to elicit the release of the 229 hostages, and that number just out of the idf's press conference about a couple of hours ago, so we're talking about 229 abductees, mediation efforts continue, led by the qataris in trying to illicit the release of some of those hostages. it does appear these hostages are being seen as civilians on the one side and military soldiers on the other. it's tonot clear how many are soldiers and civilians. there are foreign nationals and israeli citizens and there are women, children, and the elderly. one assumes those have to assume, we haven't. told this specifically, those are the hostages who are being seen as and negotiated for as civilians. so at this stage, earlier on today, it's quite late in the evening here now, half past 10:00 in qatar, we were told that these discussions were hopful. there were still issues to be iro

let's bring in becky anderson, she is live in tel aviv.ood morning, this day four and the idf, give an update on the border fence. what is the latest? >> reporter: yeah, let me just explain what is going on here as we speak. you talk about the 200 targeted attacks by the idf overnight on gaza. we've seen the fighter jets or heard the fighter jets in the air and we continue to feel and hear the low level rumble of what is likely those targeted attacks and the iron dome intercepting anything that is coming out of gaza. i can't stand up the fact that there has been any rockets out of gaza today, but the sound that we're hearing could either be these targeted attacks or oftentimes it is the interception of the iron dome. but let's assume that this is the targeted attacks. what the idf is doing at present is trying to completely destroy hamas' infrastructure. so it is attacking as they say the military targets. it is also as you rightly point out trying to ensure that that border around gaza is absolutely secure and they describe it as mostly d

becky anderson is live with moor.he reality is there are still significant complications to be addressed before this aid can start to move. >> you're right. they have to fix the roads and aid not likely to get in until friday. but it is a start. it is a start. and we've spoken to people on the ground who say this is incredibly important and if this is just the beginning, it could allow for more. they are talking about the need for hundreds of trucks a day to come through. but it was certainly one of the objectives joe biden had in coming to israel here. and to get that humanitarian corridor open, he also of course is looking for the evacuation of u.s. citizens in the first instance out of gaza. and indeed the release of these hostages. and we know there are a the least a handful if not more american hostages being held. and so we didn't hear a constraints, but we are hearing for calls of a ceasefire. the number of dead and injured continues to rise. and the humanitarian situation as we've been discussing for those who

. >> for more, let's go to cnn's becky anderson who joins us live from tel aviv. becky, what's the latest about what we're learning about the attack and the ongoing aftermath. >> reporter: well, this is a war that netanyahu says that israel will win. and he says the enemy will pay an unprecedented price. and i quote him here, because i think it's important to just consider what that war will look like, and what sort of price will be paid on both sides. because as you rightly pointed out there are israel hostages identified by the idf spokesman as in their dozens currently being held by hamas militants in gaza. and that will very much complicate what the israeli defense forces do next. let's just roll back and just consider just how brazen and shocking to israelis and israeli forces that attack was just a little more than 24 hours ago. israeli land breached by air, sea and land. let me bring up some images, for example, of just one scene, music festivalgoers. in the desert. just in southern israel. and saturday morning, 6:30 in the morning, an all-night festival hea

for more now, cnn's becky anderson reports from a hospital in tel aviv. a warning, some of the images and becky's report are graphic. >> the sound becoming ever more present for so many families caught in the crosshairs of war. families like the shindler's, praying that their beloved -- survives. the 33 year old was at home with his wife and six kids when militants attacked the area around his house. as he tried to fight back he sustained heavy injuries and is now in critical condition. he live in a kibbutz called -- in southern israel, right next to the border with gaza. the location, mere steps away from where hamas militants bulldozed through the border, tearing down a section of the fence. an image that has come to define this historic moment in the decades long conflict. >> translator: they threw a grenade on the door in front of him. he fell on his back, i thought he died, so i didn't even cry for help, his wife told me. his face badly beaten. one arm amputated. the other left with only two fingers on his hand. he is being treated here in the medical

our becky anderson has been following those negotiations led in part by officials in cat that that maintains many deep contacts with officials from hamas. becky, i wonder where that stands, where those negotiations stand. are they ongoing? is there any hope among the officials you speak with? >> reporter: yes, there is. i was perhaps slightly surprised this time yesterday when we had a really sort of fulsome conversation with the adviser to the prime minister here who still felt very optimistic that not only were those talks ongoing, but they would get to the point where we would see the release of some, perhaps not all, but some of the civilian hostages being held by hamas in gaza. look, i think there's a kind of step back and have a look at the wider story here. israel's ground invasion which started -- the second phase of which started on friday in gaza, has been roundly condemned, here, turkey, uae, saudi arabia, egypt, around this region. there are real concerns about all civilians caught up in this humanitarian catastrophe in gaza. that, of course, includes those who have been held hos

cnn's becky anderson is in tel aviv.nd you heard from some of the families today, what are they asking of israeli and u.s. authorities? >> reporter: they are pleading for help and information. and they are urging the u.s. government to help negotiate the release of these hostages. just let me explain what happened today. we heard from families of four dual citizens, u.s. and israeli citizens who are missing and presumed to be held hostage by hamas. we heard from the son and daughter of a 66-year-old nurse from the parents of a 23-year-old who was at the rave on saturday morning. we heard from a -- the father of a boy named saggy, and he's a grown man, he's 35 years old and he has two kids and his wife is pregnant with their third. he lives on the kibbutz in oz. this is a kibbutz that was overrun on saturday morning. there is video on the social media of militants paging through a military base very close to this kibbutz which has been reduced to rubble. it was a kibbutz of 400 people and we spoke to saggy's dad today who

becky anderson is live in tel aviv. the president said the blast was called by, quote, the other team. he was sitting across from netanyahu, so he meant gaza militants. this does seem to put the u.s. as saying we believe one side specifically. what does it mean for the diplomatic mission he's on going forward? >> let's be quite clear, authorities in gaza absolutely put the blame square ly on the idf and strikes by israel. i think that this puts it in a very odd situation here. it is not clear what the u.s. president's objectives were in coming to israel nor what success would look like. but clearly if you call this a mission to a certain extent, that mission, that trip, certainly framed in a slightly different way in the hours that president biden was on air force one flying here when the news came of that horrific catastrophic blast in the hospital which has killed hundreds. and we have seen very swift regional reaction. the uae, saudi arabia, egypt, the p.a., palestinian authority, iraq here condemning israel squarely

beckie anderson reports, some incidents were caught on camera.images in this report are disturbing. >> reporter: a disturbing sight. an israeli settler shooting a palestinian point-blank in the south meanwhile the man who shot in this video did survive. many others confronted with settler violence across the occupy west bank recently have not. cnn reached out to israel's police for comment on this shooting. but is not received a response. nearly a week into the war between hamas and israel, at least 47 palestinians have been killed in the west bank by settlers and israeli forces. with hundreds of others injured. fears that the violence would spill over into this area are beginning to feel very real. at the heart of the conflict, this place, usually filled with tens of thousands of worshippers, gathered for friday prayers. today. almost empty. israeli police restricting access to the compound only letting in the elderly. 57-year-old says seeing the compound so empty is upsetting. the atmosphere was so tense. it was difficult getting in, she says.

we are being told to becky anderson and marcus that there are negotiations that are continuing. what more can you tell us? >> yes, these negotiations are being made by qatar, and significant progress is being made, and i am told by a diplomatic source that the talks are ongoing and we are remaining hopeful. now, absolutely clear what we do know and don't know. we know that there are at least 220 hostaging being held in gaza, and these are foreign nationals and israeli citizens. we don't know what the numbers are specifically on that split. nor do we know whether all of the hostages are actually being held by hamas or whether some of them could be being held with other groups. this qatar-led negotiation is specifically with hamas at the moment. we also don't know the minutia of the details here, but as we understand it, we know that hamas has been asking for a pause in the fighting and a cease-fire period with as many as five days with a number of sources had been suggested to me, and they are looking and demanding that the border crossing at rafah is open for more medical aid, f

becky anderson picks up that story. >> reporter: a weekend of high stakes diplomacy. antony blinken hearing from key allies on a whistle stop seven nation tour. many of the regions' top leaders calling for israel to deescalate and allow humanitarian aid into gaza. egypt's president says israel's response has gone beyond self-defense and is now a, quote, collective punishment against gazans. his concerns are echoed by saudi crown prince. mbs stressing to stop the military operations that claim the lives of innocent people, work to calm the situation, stop the current escalation and respect humanitarian law including lifting the siege on gaza and work to create conditions for the return of stability. and qatar working intensively to secure the release of hostages taken by hamas while also calling for deescalation in the region and an immediate cease fire. blinken brought those sentiments back to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> the way israel does this matters. needs to do it in a way that affirms the shared values that we have for human life and human dign
