byron barnett is live in new bedford right now. just the older teen, the 18-year-old just appeared in court. >> they were both in court but the 16-year-old's in juvenile court and we don't have that. as we said, this is a gut-wrenching ordeal for bedford as they sat in the courtroom and listened to the terrible details of his alleged killer. here's some courtroom video, the son and daughter of the 66-year-old from new bedford left the courtroom in tears as the gruesome murder were revealed. police say he was a taxi driver in retirement and police say that on saturday night he picked up mills and a 16-year-old he was with. police say that mills had them drive them to a parking lot in bedford where he shot them. he's a retired veterans agent, a vietnam veteran and was very well known around the area as an advocate for veterans. here's what the prosecutor had so say. >> the defendant shot him from behind once in he got out of the car, your honor, from where he was seated directly behind him, the defendant went to the driver's side doo

our frank holland has the story from new bedford. frank: 43-year-old danny santos arrested and charged with nine counts of animal cruelty. neighbor: i really am surprised that something like that happened. frank: new bedford police describe a disgusting scene inside of his home on green street. two dead cats along with several malnourished dogs were found inside, and police say feces was neighbor: that's disturbing. it's awful to know that these animals that have absolutely no way of literally supporting themselves, that people are just-- they could care less. frank: behind this chain link fence police say they found the remains of seven dead chickens and three dead rabbits. eight living animals-- seven dogs and one cat-- also removed from the home. police came to the house around 3:00 on saturday morning while investigating an unrelated hit-and-run. when police approached the home, they heard dogs barking and saw what was apparently a house of squalor. neighbor: as far as i'm concerned, it never was a problem with too many animals.
