our lead national correspondent david begnaud is in odessa.t's going on? >> reporter: good morning. the gunman, 36-year-old seth ator, used an ar style rifle. there is a report from the "houston chronicle" quoting a state representative here in desant odessa who says atore failed a background check. the police were saying initially there were two shooters. that's because he was using two different vehicles. the car he was stopped in and the car he stole. there were not two shooters. there is only one. police say this all started when state troopers pulled over atore for a simple traffic violation. failure to signal. he opened fire and sped off, shooting randomly at people. there are 15 different crime scenes across odessa and midland. a short time later atore ditched his vehicle. he hijacked a mail van, killing 29-year-old postal worker mary granados. her twin sister rosie was on the phone with her when she was shot. >> i think that he could have taken a car without having to kill her, you know. just he could have taken the car. that's it. tha

tracking it all but we begin in the bahamas with "cbs this morning's" lead national correspondent, david begnaud. he is in the capital. i understand that is the stage for rescues. what is happening there? >> reporter: if there is hope this morning, the sunrises on hope because it is a new day of searching today. we're at airport because this is where people are being medevaced and taken to a local hospital. if you look out on the tarmac, there is about a half dozen people loading up a helicopter as they get ready to take off into an area where there is no cell signal. the reason we're in the bahamas in nassau this morning is because we have the signal live to tell you what's going on. they saw people waving for help below. they could not be rescued because the conditions were so poor. today they will try again. the extent of dorian's destruction across the northern bahamas is immense. from the air, flying over abaco island, the damage stretches for miles. entire neighborhoods flattened, homes shredded, shipping containers and boats hurled inland. some airports look like lakes now. this is the te

cbs this morning lead national correspondent david begnaud is in the country's capital of nassau.aveled with a group delivering aid to one of the bahama's barrier islands? >> reporter: yes, we traveled with chef jose andres, who is feeding people. by now you've seen the images of the devastation. i want you to hear the stories. that is what is so important here that will convey to you the type of humanitarian crisis that continues this morning and is only getting worse. the chef had a seat on his helicopter. it was packed with food. he allowed us to go with him. here's what we saw. we took off from nassau with the helicopter full of hope. so much water, fruit, and food that some of it was nearly in chef jose andres' lap. he wasn't mad about that. he was unhappy with the pace. >> i blame myself. today if things go well we'll deliver 7500 meals but for me this is half of what we are supposed to be doing all right. >> reporter: the first place we landed was green turtle key in the abaco islands. people were waiting as the chef off loaded food and we went to ask people what they need.

our lead national correspondent david begnaud is in nassau, the capital of the bahamas. this position of the airport. i want to show you what's going on inside of there. that's the triage area where doctors and nurses ready to receive people being brought in with injuries. yesterday it was literally a continuous, almost every five minutes an ambulance was pulling up taking someone else to the hospital. some people don't need to go to the hospital, so they are taken on to a bus. as one woman said, where do i go? i don't have a place to seleep. thousands of people are missing. this website is very helpful. dorian people search dot-com. you can find the status of a loved one or add a missing person to the database. very valuable. people are continuing to show up at the airport. more rescue crews today than we saw yesterday. thousands of people right now are waiting in the devastated areas, anthony, to be rescued. they are still waiting. >> yes, so many people trying to be reunited. thank you. >>> ahead, presidential hopeful andrew yang tells us about his proposal to give ev

cbs lead national correspondent david begnaud is also here in cocoa beach.us right here in florida. >> yeah, norah, and we can feel the winds. as i look down the beach, which is a ghost town, by the way. you can't see very far. the sand is blowing things to the wind. no rain so far, though i'm starting to feel a couple drops. cocoa beach, a mandatory evacuation zone and you really can't find anybody on the street right now. let's talk about the bahamas. the prime minister there says they are in the midst of a historic tragedy. so far this morning at least five people are confirmed dead. to the video now, let us show you what we have and what we're getting from people who are on the island. the images we're seeing are hard to believe. the storm is actually stalled on top of the island for about 14 hours. remember, this context is so important. there are 700 islands in the bahamas, 30 of them are inhabitable and abaco and grand bahama are the ones we're talking about. 2 feet of rain has fallen and the ocean rose up with a storm surge as much as 23 feet swallow
