that came out of bell labs. most people know that, that the innovation that came out of bell labs was significant and changed life on this planet. what you might not know is that the venture capital world also came out of bell labs. william shockley, went to stanford and brought with him the invention. bell labs was licensing the semiconductor at one dollar per license. silicon valley exists because of bell labs. the venture capital model been -- the venture capital model exists because of bell labs. it was a monopoly, partly government-funded, and if they did not take 10 to 20 years of patient money, being a very rich monopoly, there would not be a silicon valley. it would have been age or medium -- a germania valley. if they did not spend another 10 to 15 years on it in bell labs it probably would have still been barking up the germania and tree. the question for groups like this one in the room is, how do we re-create that innovation ecosystem? i personally do not think we go back and create monopolies that a

nbc 10's katy zachary is live in blue bell with more. katy? >> reporter: rosemary this is not what these parents wanted to worry about going into the weekend. many of these are working families and they don't have any place to take their children starting tomorrow. now that the goddard school this location here in blue bell has closed. we met some of these families in the parking lot yesterday, and they tell us they were told about this late friday that their children's day care and school here is closing for good. it leaves about 100 young kids out of the classroom. now, we did get an e-mail from goddard school management late yesterday. they tell us they will help families find other day care options, and for those with no place to turn the school says it will provide free care for a week, but many families tell us it's not good enough. >> there are around 100 children now that need to get placed somewhere on monday. well, some of the local day cares are at their capacity. so am i supposed to just not go to work on monday? >> reporter: that'

moving on nearby to bell isle. i'm sure some of you in their studies and readings have encountered bell isle before. it is the main prison camp for union enlisted men. that and salisbury were the two big confederate prisons. i can't resist putting this in my show even though it is not 1865. it's 1863. the photographer climbed up this hill and got theis amazing view of the bell isle prison camp. look off in the background. this is the downtown. this is downtown richmond. it's going to burn in 1865 and it's just that hazy bit in the background. why? because his negatives don't survive. they're not in the national archives. they're not in the library of congress. there's the gigantic two buildings. it is acting as the confederate capital when this image is made. you can see brown's island and the laboratory from here. in 1865, another photographer got up there and -- i'm sure he didn't know he was mimicking the shot, but took almost the exact same view. this is two years later. you can see the gun overlooking the camp
