beltway in fairfax county. construction on hot lanes is under way. n ow n o the little river turnpike right over the capital beltway. will thomas is live there to get us started. >> reporter: we're at an active construction site so safety of the equipment is required. vdot and its construction partners are now hoisting steel beams into place that will essentially create a new little river turnpike bridge. don, why don't you push in. you can see these guys working over there right next to the old one. the capital beltway in fairfax county is going to get much wider with two hot lanes in each direction. right now some of the existing overpasses and interchanges are smack dab in the middle of where these new lanes will go up. that's why they have to tear the old ones down and build new ones. it's the first steel beam lift on the beltway at little river turnpike, one of 58 bridges and overpasses that will be demolished and rebuilt along a 14-mile stretch of the beltway. >> people can see something. they'll wonder for the first year, what's going o. now t

the beltway looking good. northbound 395 here at the 14th street bridge, all lanes are open as you work your way across the potomac. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >>> work to widen the beltway in fairfax county is now under way. eventually, there will be two hot lane in each direction. some of the existing overpasses will have to be torn down and rebuilt to stretch across the new lanes. work on the little river turnpike bridge is now officially kicked off and that is a major milestone in the project. will thomas has more on this developing story. >> reporter: it is the first steel beam lift on the beltway at little river turnpike, one of 58 bridges and overpasses that will be demolished and rebuilt along a 14 machine mile stretch of the beltway. >> people can see something and they wonder for the first year, what is going on. now, they see visual signed and all throughout the rest of the construction season through the end of november time frame, they will see a lot of creative work being done.
