susan: senator ben cardin, that is it for our time. thank you for being our guest on "newsmakers." sen. cardin: my pleasure. good to be with you. susan: niels lesniewski, but start with taxes because the democrats on thursday had a big press conference with house and senate leaders where they talked about the model they used for the health care law and stirring up a big public relations campaign to make their case about why the republican plan will not work for middle-class americans. but, on the other side, the republicans are united in the fact that they want to pass tax legislation. it is a must pass for them as they go into the 2018 election cycle. they are energized around this. what do the prospects look like on capitol hill? niels: the early prospects make this seem like it is a must pass for the republicans. the question really, and this goes back to what we talked about with senator cardin at the very top, is basically whether or not you can get, if you are the republicans, enough of your own republicans in the house from places like new york, new jersey, california, high t

democratic senator ben cardin of maryland is joining us. he's the ranking member on the senate foreign relations committee. senator, thanks for joining us. >> wolf, it's good to be with you. is this, what we just heard, is this evidence of collusion? >> well, it's certainly very troublesome. we know that there is direct contact and we know that donald trump jr. talks about, perhaps the russian sanctions issue. so these are very troublesome contacts and we need to see what the investigation comes forward. >> when do you believe that president trump himself may have learned about this coordinated russian outreach? >> well, we don't know that. we don't know exactly how much was shared, with donald trump himself. we know that a lot of people around him knew about these meetings. they previously denied any knowledge. now we know that they were in the loop. this clearly needs further investigations. >> how does carter page's testimony, and we've now read the transcript of that testimony, help explain what we've already learned from the george pap

joining us ben cardin, the ranking member of the senate foreign releases complete.for joining us. >> it's good to be with you. thank you. >> do you agree with senator grassley's assessment that donald trump jr.'s communicationings with wikileaks was not very significant? what's your analysis? >> not at all. first of all, we know that wikileaks has been working with russia in regards to what happened in our election. now we know there was communication between wikileaks and donald trump jr. about using the information of wikileaks. shortly thereafter, candidate trump issued a tweet in regards to wikileaks. this is more than just having information that's interesting. this is extremely troublesome and does require a congressional hearing. > does it just require a congressional hearing or more? do you want the special counsel to be investigating anything look those lines? >> i'm certain that the special counsel is looking at this. mr. mueller has a reputation of being very thorough. i expect that is certainly a part of his investigation. yes, this goes to a complete in

[video] >> do you have any sense of what the timeline is going to be for trying to draft a new authorization and how brought it should be? sen. cardin: out with a competent secretary tillerson and secretary mattis. i thought they were very direct in their answers and very helpful to us. it is clear to me we cannot 2001 authorization that was passed by congress immediately after the attack on our country on september 11 aimed at terrorists in afghanistan to be used for worldwide military campaigns against terrorists. we need to update and replace that authorization with one that makes sense considering how much we know now about terrorists globally. we certainly don't want to have an open-ended authorization for american ground troops to go basically anywhere in the world. it is important that congress replace the 2001 with an authorization that makes sense. senator corker and i will try to work

"the president's denial of facts is troubling". —— cardin. but that type of denial is nothing new. he's been saying this to his supporters. the russia story is a totalfabrication. it's just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of american politics. that's all it is. president putin says it is all made up by donald trump's opponents, too. but if either of them think that will lay to rest the matter, they are, of course, mistaken. the usjustice department is investigating the extent to which russia did interfere and donald trump's former campaign manager, paul manafort, is currently under house arrest because of information discovered during the investigation. well, donald trump now says all this focus on russian interference in the us election is costing lives in conflicts like the one in syria because it is getting in the way of his relationship with vladimir putin, and so his ability to resolve such issues. but that is not going to stop investigators back in the states determining exactly what did happen with moscow, the trump campaign and the election of 2016. aleem maq
