. >>> joining us is ben cardin of maryland, a member of the foreign relations committee. so senator, let's pick up right there with what we're talking about with shannon. what are your thoughts on president trump's continued attacks on the georgia runoffs? do you think he's complicated his own party's efforts to motivate voters? >> joe, good to be with you. president trump, it's always about president trump. it's always about him. if an election turns out the way he wants it to, it's a fair election. if not, it's not a fair election. so right now, he's raising doubt about the georgia election because he recognizes that democrats may very well win the georgia elections. it's not about our democracy. it's not about free and fair elections. it's about donald trump. >> senator, the president also tweeted that there will be a big protest, he also called it wild, in dc, the day lawmakers meet to certify the electoral college vote. at the same time senator josh hawley joined republicans with the results, what should we expect that day? >> what we expect is we accept the election

democratic senator ben cardin of maryland. thank you for joining us. >> ana, good to be with you. >> a number of republican senators are telling cnn that passions are starting to cool making it increasingly unlikely former president trump will be convicted. at the same time, we are continuing to learn new information about trump's attempts to stay in office. so what impact do you think this new reporting will have on the upcoming impeachment trial? >> i think it will have some impact. after all, what was the president's motive in inciting the crowd to come down to the capitol? it was all about trying to promote his lies about the legitimacy of the campaign. so i think all of the things the president tried to do to overturn the election was relevant to the impeachment trial although the article is specific about incitement of insurrection. obviously, we need to listen to all of the evidence. i expect the house managers will be bringing these issues up. >> i just wonder if any evidence will change minds because i want you to hea
