light sculpture and i'm here with ben davis, the founder of illuminate the arts the group that put thisis really your idea initially. tell us what was the purpose behind this project? >> you know, it's really -- this is a beautiful bridge. it opened in 1936. there were four days of celebration and six months later the golden gate bridge opened and the world's attention drifted that way and i wanted to find a way to let this bridge shine in the region's consciousness and it became a canvas of light. >> reporter: it became so popular so quickly that we were able to raise $4 million in order to make this sculpture permanent. what does that mean to you that everybody really embraced it as we did? >> i think it's really beautiful that something is temporary we have to fight for it makes it much more special and the fact it will go away for 11 months lets us miss it. it will be a true moment when it comes back in conjunction with super bowl 50. >> reporter: during that 11 months caltrans will be doing maintenance on the bridge removing the lights from the cables to do that. what's today like

. >> the art installation envisioned by ben davis created by the artist has caused people to stop and gaze at the working man's bridge. >> it will leave a 1.8 mile hole in the mile of san francisco. >> reporter: good news is the hole in the sky will eventually sparkle again. you see, davis' group illuminate the arts is taking down the lights to make way for bridge maintenance at the end of the permitted run but following the nearly year long hiatus it will be reinstalled for the bay area to host the 2016 super bowl. >> the lights will become a permanent fixture. >> reporter: once the lies are reinstalled the group plans to turn over the control to caltranz keeping them burning for the foreseeable future and to pay for the work the group had to raise $4 million in private funds which caught the attention of a philanthropist tad taube. >> i couldn't believe that the incredible lighty was going to be gone. >> reporter: so he dug deep deep into his pockets and kicked in 2 million. after funding operas and charities and museums he says the permanent loss of the light would leave the hole i

but the lights will be back in time for the super bowl, and the man taking sure that happens is ben davis who is are the the arts illumination board, and you had this a ha! moment, and what is that moment? >> well, i wanted to find a way for the bridge to shine. it open in 1936 and really it was a celebration until the golden gate bridge opened, and then it took a cinderella role. so i decided it is not just a bridge, but a canvas of lights. even though it scared me, it filled me with love. i have been blessed with some of the artists along the way. i had not known some of the artists before the idea arrived. >> so they will be turned off today, and then you had to raise private money, $4 million, to get them back up, and in 11 months that is going to happen, they will be back up? >> yes. >> will it be different from what we see? >> y everybody loves them including the artist, and leo is bri brilliant, so we will give him the freedom to come up with the ideas over the next 11 months. but i am sure if possible, they will have an improved version. >> when they come back, they will be perman
