light sculpture and i'm here with ben davis, the founder of illuminate the arts the group that put thisis really your idea initially. tell us what was the purpose behind this project? >> you know, it's really -- this is a beautiful bridge. it opened in 1936. there were four days of celebration and six months later the golden gate bridge opened and the world's attention drifted that way and i wanted to find a way to let this bridge shine in the region's consciousness and it became a canvas of light. >> reporter: it became so popular so quickly that we were able to raise $4 million in order to make this sculpture permanent. what does that mean to you that everybody really embraced it as we did? >> i think it's really beautiful that something is temporary we have to fight for it makes it much more special and the fact it will go away for 11 months lets us miss it. it will be a true moment when it comes back in conjunction with super bowl 50. >> reporter: during that 11 months caltrans will be doing maintenance on the bridge removing the lights from the cables to do that. what's today like
