because you also wrote a biography of ben franklin. and franklin was also in a sense a great entrepreneur. >> absolutely. franklin is a 17-year-old dropout, runaway, creates a printing shop. and steve jobs is a college dropout, whatever. he wants to start the 21st century of a printing shop. he want to start a company that makes computers. wozniak is at the other extreme. he's the best engineer you can imagine. as steve jobs says, he's 50 times better than any other engineer. he can hold meetings in his head. but when he creates something including the blue box, the first thing they created which ripped off the phone company for long distance, you know, woz wants to give it to their friends. steve says, no, i can make a really cool case, we can package it and sell it for $66 apiece or whatever and make some money. that's the pattern. steve jobs is the entrepreneur. he knows how to make insanely, you know, great products, well packaged, and sell them. and woz is just this engineer who writes wonderful, you know, code and circuit boards.

what is your next book and would you consider doing one on ben franklin, lincoln or washington? >> i don't know what my next book will be right at the moment. i'm practicing putting my feet up and taking a bit of a breather. i spent four very happy and busy years writing about a greater germany and it was in many ways the most enjoyable and interesting experience of my writing life. i always have a marketing list if you will a shopping list of ideas that i keep coming and i've been keeping it for years. future books and right now i think there are 27 ideas on the list. so i'm going to have to live a very long time in order to do it. [laughter] i think the thing that is important about the postal service is that you've got to keep the basic tenets of customer service and you're also a sore wrist at the forefront -- and the universal service at the forefront. i think we can do that without hurting our customers. >> someone asks, if post offices to close, what happens to the release day? >> we are selling real-estate and eliminating leases as we speak. last year we sold something like to one or $50 million, to $300 million worth of businesses. 7% on our floor space is el onta, -- 70% of our floor space is owned, but we only own 30% of our buildings. if someone out there has a lease for a post office, that is considered a municipal bond. do not get rid of that. [laughter] >> what happens to the employees once a facility closes? >> we are working toward that. from an employee's standpoint, we produce the career headcount -- we have reduced the career headcount by 25

what is your next book and would you consider doing one on ben franklin, lincoln or washington? >> i don't know what my next book will be right at the moment. i'm practicing putting my feet up and taking a bit of a breather. i spent four very happy and busy years writing about a greater germany and it was in many ways the most enjoyable and interesting experience of my writing life. i always have a marketing list if you will a shopping list of ideas that i keep coming and i've been keeping it for years. future books and right now i think there are 27 ideas on the list. so i'm going to have to live a very long time in order to do it. [applause] but something happens, something daucks. ..yesterday and she mentioned e same feeling and i have never heard her say that before. it was thrilling to me to feel she has this same idea. it's all well and good to say such and such and so and so would make a great subject for a book. probably they would. first of all i'm not interested in the subject so much as i interested in the story. when james billington complimented me on my book as hav

when ben franklin walked down the steps of constitutn hall, a woman walked up to him and said after they'dinish their work, designing our nation, she said, what do we have dr. franklin? a monarchy or a republic? he looked at her and said, a republic if you can keep it. that's the work that we face today, and i am very, very proud to be engaged in that work with john mccain, and with others in the senate, people who want to reach across and find not just the commonground, but find the higher ground. that's what builds our nation. the history of the senate is a place where people disagreed and great partisanship. people could have different ideologies and beliefs, but when the nation's interests were at stake, those people found a way to come together and put tho interests ahead of all else. i think that new hampshire is going to contribute humanly to the effort to help us do that once again in this presidential race. i think david broder said perhaps in the bible there was a line that said and new hampshire shall lead.
