ben franklin's operation would have been another one. it is robert bell who publishes the first edition but because there was no copyright back then, competitors would soon buy a copy and print their own compete against him. so robert bell is fiercely trying to hold on to that earlier advantage. i am obsessed with common sense. i have this assignment i do with students, which i am pathetically proud of. it uses one of these amazing databases we have now. which is digitized a hall's on of early american newspapers from this era and you can search them by keyword. any mention of common sense next to each other will get flagged and you can scroll through them and see who used that phrase. i have an assignment where i tell my students, writers over the years have said that everyone in america read common sense, it was almost universally read. people who have tried to count the number of readers have speculated it is 300,000 or something like that. but nobody has bothered to prove that. they have just asserted that. so i have my students use
