franklin's death. the queen of soul died this morning at the age of 76. joining us now to talk about her impact on music, ben long time. what can you tell us about aretha franklin? having met her. >> well, i have never met her, but i saw her perform at the fillmore west with ray charles, as her very special guest. and, she was, right from the beginning of my time at "rolling stone" in 1969, and will before that when i was in high school. i had been aware of her incredible vocal power and her skill with her talent. but, in 1966 when she joined atlantic records, all heaven broke loose. and, she brought her gospel infused music and what it it with muscle shoals players, under superproducer jeremy wexler. and, we had a whole new voice and sound, thanks to aretha. that carried on through all of my time at "rolling stone." and i remained a fan of course, years after. >> i want you to talk about her overall impact on music. there will never be anyone quite like her. >> no, they want. there have been a lot that have come to try to emulate her. it's an awful high bar to go for. and her peers, like gladys knight and n
