katy tur, and ben ginsburg, a republican deal maker and elections lawyer. th rick and ben are political analysts for nbc news and msnbc. katy tur, let's start with you. we've seen the reaction here from republicans over the last couple days. but now this report that trump, instead of backing off, he's telling people around him, go even harder on this? >> reporter: you know, i haven't seen this sort of combined, this crescendo of criticism since, i think, the muslim ban going against donald trump. he's been edging towards republican party unity, relatively successfully. this is a major step backward in that arena. but donald trump's is, as you said, not backing down. i don't think we can call it a doubling down, tripling down, quadrupling down. it's more than that. he's telling his surrogates to actively go out there, defend his remarks on the judge and call the reporters who are questioning him racists themselves, which is another step further in this saga, if you will. i've been talking to multiple sources both inside the campaign and working closely with t

i'm joined by super lawyer and nbc political analyst ben ginsburg p.adding superlatives to your name. and the superb cnbc contributor larry per low. larry let me start with you. infighting this week wasn't -- there was the usual personal stuff that goes back and forth inside between trump and the republican party. but this week it was about policy. and a massive policy difference on trade. you're trying very hard to rally folks around trump. how do you do it on the issue of trade? you are mr. free trade. you are in 2008, critical of those questioning nafta, for instance. where are you on this? >> i am a free trader. okay? and i think not that i might have changes in it but wouldn't ado away with it. on the other hand i joined another free trader, speaker paul ryan, who came out and endorsed trump's trade speech. on the following grounds with which i agree. that is to say if you make a trade deal both sides have to play by the rules. and among other countries, china never seems to do that. they steal our property rights, counterfeit our goods. cyber hac

. >> let me bring in ben ginsburg, msnbc political analyst, republican strategist, partner at jones day. nice to see you. donald trump's son-in-law, jerry kushner helped write this speech and he delivered it off of teleprompt teleprompters. there was attack after attack on hillary clinton. effective? >> yeah. i think it was the most complete attack that donald trump has yet delivered against hillary clinton. it came at a time when many in the republican party were saying that it was really needed. he did deliver that today. you've seen the clinton counter attack. it will be an uplifting 4 1/2 months until the election. >> the fact checking began right away, in fact, while the speech was still going on we were fact checking certain things he said. i want to note, he called hillary clinton a world class liar today. if you look at politifact, does a lot of fact checking, 59% of trump's claims over recent months have been found false or pants on fire, 12% of clinton's claims have been found false or pants on fire. a lot of the things that trump said today did not pass the test of being fact

let me bring in ben ginsburg, national counsel to romney campaign. joining us again. >> thanks for having me. >> let's talk about the reaction from presidential candidates. donald trump gave a speech earlier in the day, a teleprompter speech, more measured remarks. on his twitter account after very much criticized after the massacre in orlando. when you hear donald trump say fight fire with fire and use even worse than waterboarding what is your reaction? >> my reaction is that he is making a very visceral appeal to voters beyond the republican base if you combine it with what he said on fair trade, free trade yesterday, what he said about theb brexit vote it is in contrast to president obama and hillary clinton who are playing very much an establishment game. this just reinforces that donald trump is banking on being a disrupter to really all institutions and he is running against a very establishment candidate trying to get a third term for the current administration. >> what we are watching you bring up what happened in the uk was a visceral react

ben ginsburg. man hay worth, and eugene robinson. and i have oklahoma republican congressman tom colt who is, of course, the only former political pollster serving in congress. so, congressman cole, i start with you. you are on the ballot this year. how comfortable are you with donald trump as the republican party standard barer today at 5:21 eastern time? >> well, probably less comfortable at 5:21 today than a week ago. look, i think the real question here is whether or not you recognize you made a mistake and you begin to back away from it. i looked at the statement i saw a few minutes ago that suggests mr. trump decided not to talk about it anymore and at least if he wants to question whether or not he's going -- he needs to be on the merits of the handling of the case without any kind of racial or ethnic background. if he learns this lesson here, it'll be hard learned. it'll be a step in the right direction. >> any evidence he'll learn a lesson from this? >> tom is one of our wisest heads in the republican party. i'm hoping very
